Foreign.
Welcome back to questionably awesome where you are my co host.
Hi Lori, how are you?
I'm great. What is so fun about your life is that I feel like I'm traveling with you. So I'm at home and you are like in different rooms in different places every single week. So I. You were supposed to be home last week as we left off last time on the questionably awesome podcast where we talk mostly about shenanigans and answer your questions mixed in there and once in a while drop some wisdom nuggets. So if you're looking for a serious interview, this is not it. You want to tune out. So with that said, you were going to be home in Los Angeles this week, but I said, oh, you're home, but this doesn't look like your house. So where are we?
I'm in South Carolina and I'm in an Airbnb that's very clean that's had.
No one in it.
So we decided to go see some of my family.
That's awesome. Which side of the fam?
My mom and I guess it's just my mom.
Oh, that's amazing. Is it? Is it? Are you evening there right now? Yeah.
Yep. It's 6:20.
Oh my gosh. Are you drunk yet?
I am very drunk. You know what? I forgot about Charleston. Everyone should go here. Especially you, Lori. I think you would love it so much. But I forget how everything's around like food and drinks here.
Oh yeah.
And you just like. It's like everyone just sits on their porch and has a cocktail.
Wow. Especially right now probably.
Yeah. Because it's still nice. It's not too hot.
Do you know how to make a mint julep?
No, but I need to learn.
Isn't there simple syrup in it?
Can you Google that?
I'll Google it.
Oh, if it's a Southern drink, there is simple syrup in there. And if there's not simple syrup, let me tell you that there is a sugar cube honey that you muddle at the bottom. That is the only way to have a Southern drink with wax.
Oh, there is muddling.
Oh, okay.
Bourbon, simple syrup and mint leaves. That's pretty much all you need.
Wow, that sounds fantastic.
That sounds great.
Yeah. You have that at the Kentucky Derby, right? Yeah.
Do you want to go next year?
Can we? Have you ever gone?
I've gone once and it's really cool.
Did you go all out on your outfit? I have a feeling you did not.
I wasn't as cool as everyone else, but everyone, it's so cool because when you get the airport, they all have their special hat boxes with their hats in them. They're so cool.
Okay, can we go one year? Just so it's actually my fantasy. It's on my list. My bucket list is actually to go to Ducky Derby. I don't even need to see the horses. I have to wear the outfits. I want it to be like very, like something very fitted. Great shoes, but like gloves. Like the whole deal in the massive hat. Yes. And bright pink or red lipstick. And I must have an eternally full mint julep or other said southern drink.
I really can see this in my head. I can see you at the Derby right now.
Oh, yeah. And we're going to do fake Southern accents the whole time. And everyone will just be like, where have you been? You seem like the bell of the ball. How has the bell of the bowl been hiding for years? And I'll be like, I don't know what I'll be like. But can you tell me another Southern drink that everybody drinks there? That's an alcoholic drink.
Bourbon. A lot of bourbon.
Oh, that's right. When I was down there, it was like lots of bourbon based drinks. But I can't remember what those are right now.
Like an old fashioned.
Oh, those. See, that's a like a. That is definitely a Midwest drink as well.
It's a good drink.
Oh, man.
That'll just light you right up.
Light you right up. And before you know it, you're a thousand calories deep. And I'm like, oh, well, here we are. And I was like, well, I just had a cup of cherry juice. That's great.
Super healthy.
But man, that was fun. Those maraschino cherries. Oh, Man. Okay.
So you.
Are you coming home next week?
Maybe. We might just stay here for a while. We don't know.
So amazing. Can we just talk about how it's so great to be able to work virtually and it's just this time where you can be like, hey, when else am I ever gonna have this time, like, with family? Your mom's probably freaking loving it and. Okay, this is what I wanted to know. You have been in other people's energy in space for a month? Two months. Three.
Two months.
Two months. What does it feel like to even be in the Airbnb and, like, get your space together? I know that you and Adam were about to get a divorce last week, so I'm just.
We are now divorced.
We're divorced now, but at least we're in our own space. Like, being divorced in your own energy is, like, still fantastic. But you weren't. Just to clarify if you did not listen last week. No, they were not about to get divorced, but it was just a funky week.
Oh, yeah.
Funk ass week. Yeah. Do you feel any better this week?
I feel so much better and I don't. I feel so bad because I know not everyone can have space right now and it really stinks and it's so hard. But if there's a way you can even just like get in another room for 24 hours or something, it will. It helps.
Yeah. I think especially it depends on what type of person you are. But I was. I was just thinking this. Like, I. I've just to even be able to, like, get your energy back, like all of your own energy and not have to either worry about someone else or, you know, worry about being in someone else's space just to get out. Like, if you can't be in your own energy, like, get out and walk more. Go sit in the woods if you can. Like, just to go collect yourself. There really is something to be said about collecting yourself, and I'm pretty sure that was probably made in the South. Oh, go collect yourself. You're acting. Go collect yourself. I can't do the accent. Like you can someday. If we get to ever sit and have some cocktails together soon. Someday you can absolutely. Like, we'll only speak like that until I nail it. Until I don't let me break character until it's nailed.
Well, I think that we should go to the derby next year and we should have all of our listeners, which maybe they're like two people, join us.
That would be great. So Chris and Adam can come.
Yeah.
And my mom and Your mom, that would be so much fun. We still got to get your mom on the podcast one day. We got to ask her questions about being a Southern lady.
She would be happy to drop some.
Knowledge that I bet she would drop so much wisdom, actually. And we'd be like, shit, we just lost our podcast to your mom. And this would have to be called Questionably Mom.
Yeah, Mom. That would be a good one.
Questionably Mom. I like it. Like, sometimes I'm a mom, sometimes I'm. Yeah, I'm just gonna stop there. Yeah.
So what else is up? Do you.
Yeah, thanks. What else is up? My God. Let's see. It's a tough one. Let's. There's like so much and so little all at once. I mean, you know, moving this company forward, very, very exciting. But at the same time, super hard. Like, wow, I don't even know where to begin. So I think I'll just leave it at that. Just. I'm in a. I was in a real, real challenging week at the beginning of the week for no other reason than myself mentally challenging myself. Like, I think I was a little run down at the beginning of the week. And, you know, when you don't feel very good, I was feeling, like, defeated. Like, I was having a lot of. I think when your energy's low, which is why I talk so much on just to everyone in the podcast and everything about, like, hey, if you've got big goals, like, you really gotta take care of yourself. You gotta make sure you're exercising, you're drinking water, you're eating well. And I just think that I had, like, had too much sugar the week prior and on the weekend, which, great, I had fun, but it really affected me until, like, yesterday. It stays in my body for a while. I notice it for like two, three days. And when I, like, really overdo it and I kind of overdid it this weekend with just, yeah, sugary stuff and cocktails and.
Which is easy to do.
It was so easy to do. And I had. The thing is, is, like, I had a great time, but at the same time, I'm like, okay, you can still have fun and you can still watch, like, the food that you're eating, you know, so it was just a reminder that it's not. It's not just about. It's not about how you look. It's not about just, like, it's not about any of that. It is about if you want to be able to maintain that energy and that mood and like to do the things that you wanna do you really got to take care of yourself? Because Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, I was like, write down to the thoughts that you think. I'm like, oh, my God, am I the person that can do this? It just. That's how it goes. So I was like, lori, you gotta nurture yourself a little bit more because this dream needs a lot more protection than that. Like, you need and, you know, just energy than what you were giving it at the beginning of the week. So with that said, that's how my week has gone. It was kind of a meh week, but I'm a professional life liver, and now I know that that's okay because you're going to have weeks like that and that they're great. And I was telling Chris because he's having a meh day, like, he was having a great week, but now today is off. And I'm like, you're not supposed to. Like, he feels bad, and so do I when I'm not happy. Like, you're not supposed to feel happy. Like, and we talk about this all the time because he's normally the one who tells me, like, great, enjoy it. Now I have to go down and tell him, enjoy it. Enjoy feeling like shit. So great. It really does. Except my passive aggressiveness is like, isn't that great? And I don't like that. Don't you love feeling sad?
You had a really good post about this last week on Instagram, though. Adam actually pointed it out to me. He was like, read it out loud. The one he really did. That's awesome about just being in a weird spot. Oh, yeah, I really liked it because you gave yourself grace and then you just did a little pivot.
Yeah, totally. And that's. That's literally life, isn't it? Like, it's never. We're never going to hit this place where it's like, oh, it's good all the time. Because that's actually not how our DNA and chemistry and all of the things are created. Like, you're probably going to have some off days every single week, you know? And I think that what we focus on is what we think we are, and you just don't focus on them and you accept it. And then you don't think that you're an unhappy person. You just think you're a person. So really giving your focus. Like, hey, it's okay. It's off. But I'm still functioning. I'm still gonna do the things that keep me on track. But that's been really huge. Like, my rituals have made me so on those days, like, great, I'm still gonna do my rituals. And you know, if once in a while I need to just crawl in bed and with a box of crackers and make love to it, that's what's gonna happen.

So everybody needs to.
Yeah, absolutely. Do you have a quote? Because I don't.
Yes.
So you read it while I take one of these from this deck.
Yes. This is from Anne Lamott and I really think you'd like her book Bird by Bird. If you haven't read it.
I have heard great things about it. And what's so funny is I thought we were on questions for a second. I was like, anne Lamott. That name sounds familiar. I think I follow her.
Yeah. And Lamont just wrote in.
And Lamont is.
And Lamont wants to know what we think. Let's tell.
Let's tell Ms. Lamott some wisdom. Oh, Lord.
She says, this is cool. She says, you have to make mistakes to find out who you aren't. You take action and the insight follows. You don't think your way into becoming yourself.
Damn, that's good.
Isn't that good?
You have to make mistakes to find out who you are and who you aren't. That is so good because I thought you were gonna say R and then you said aren't. You just threw a loop in that one. And I just had spun once around in a circle and I'm back. That was real, real good.
I like how she says, you don't think your way into becoming yourself. You have to do it.
Oh, that is good. Because you discover who you are. What is something for you that you have done that has made you do your way into yourself?
Oh.
Oh.
How about. How about knowing yourself? Oh, I know. Like taking space for yourself. Can that be an answer?
Yeah. Cause it's you doing something.
Yeah, you're doing something. You just discovering that part of me. That's not a bad thing. To need more alone time than the average person, that you're just kind of, like, built that way.
To be honest, I don't even think you need more than the average person. I think you're so tuned in to what you need. I think people numb out on the fact that they need it. And that's. That's why a lot of people are walking around crazy. I think that you are attuned to it and you give it to your. Like, you are wise enough and you've done work to give it to yourself. So I don't even. Actually, I. I do this to myself all the time, Evan. So you are such a walking mirror of me sometimes. You'll say something and I'm just like, oh, shit, I do that to myself. And I can easily tell you why you shouldn't do it and why you're amazing. But it's hard for me to tell me. So when you just said that you need more space than the average person, I can't tell you how much I feel like I need space. And I feel so bad about it. Like, I'm like, oh, my God, why do I not want to do things with people on the weekend sometimes? And why do I feel like this is so hard? Because you're, like, extroverting so hard or you recharge away from people. The world is wired for some people to be extroverted for what the world needs or we would not be functioning properly. And then the world also needs people who are way more introverted and do stay away from people because they do more ideas and they're more of the creative people who need that space to be able to hear that voice. And extroverted people can sometimes, like, push things out into the world. And then sometimes there's people like you and I who get confused for extroverts. So we attract a lot of people and extroverts who want to do a lot of things with us. And it's not that we don't love them. It's that if we do all the things, we don't recharge and we feel crazy and then we get angry and mean. We get so mean and angry. And then you feel bad because you think that you're supposed to be recharged, happy, extroverted, super nice, all of the things. And all you want to do is have a mint julep by yourself with.
Some good music and watch Designing Women.
Oh, shit. That was a good show.
I think it's on Hulu.
Oh, I loved it. No wonder I've got some deep Southern roots.
You really do?
Yeah, I was up in the Midwest. Like the high up in the Midwest, like upper Michigan. Like I was in Canada watching Designing Women, feeling a deep, deep call for Deep south glass. I just watched Sweet home Alabama last week.
You did? That's a great movie.
Who makes this Deep South Glass? I can't figure it out. I'm like your ex husband.
He's right there.
He's right there. I need to know who makes this. All right, let me just tell you how this love story is going to go down. So funny the more Southern she got when she went back to Alabama.
Oh, yeah, she really did.
She really did. Hey, do we have a question? I think we're supposed to do that.
Oh, it might be you. Wait, but you didn't pull your card. Do you want to pull.
Here we go. This is a card from the universe has your back. When I forget to get a quote, it says something a little. Something like this. Thank you, universe, for helping me see beyond the limits of fear. Thank you for expanding my perception so that I can see what is of the highest good. I liked that one.
I like that too.
Right on the top of the deck. So that's what got read. It's very nice. It's a good reminder. I think I need to read this whole deck.
Just start reading the whole thing.
I'm literally just. That's going to be the rest of the podcast. So let's begin classes in session. All right. Do we have a review?
We have a review.
And it's, hey, we should come up with a song.
Oh, that's good.
Review. We made that up ourselves.
This is from loriqueery. Lori Harder wrote this review.
Lori Harder has written a review from every laptop she's ever come in contact with. Wow. Amazing. Five stars. This is Lori Query.
Lori Queering.
Okay, Lori Queering. Thank you, Lori.
Lori says I look forward to the conversation between Lori and Evans. Her accent is cool. And do you want to be my friend too? You guys make me laugh when I need one. You guys are questionably awesome.
We sure are, Lori Queering. We sure are. We're feeling good today after your review. Thank you so much. I especially love your first name. I don't meet many Loris. I really don't. How does she spell it? L O R I or L A?
U R I. L O, R I.
Shut your face. L O, R I. That's rare, too. So I used to spell my name. L, A U. Fun fact. Ready? I. In school, I knew how to spell my Name. L, O, R, I. It's easy. But I wanted to be more sophisticated at a very young age. So I would write on every paper in middle. Not middle school, elementary school. L, A, U, R, I, E. And the teachers would constantly have, like. Like, meetings with my parents because they're like, she will not spell her name the right way. And I was like, you're. Yeah, because it looks so much better in cursive. My mom was like, you have to start spelling it the way you want. And I was like, you can't tell me what to be. But I had to start spelling it the. My mom goes, I. I did L, O, R I because it's the easy way. And I was like, I am sophisticated.
Right.
So anyway, super great story. So wondering if you have a question. The way to make your stories really good, Evans, are to, like, emphasize how great they were after you say them. So, like, especially jokes, just bust out laughing.
But to your point, Lori, L, A, U, R, I, E. Does look better in cursive.
It does. It's a very long. It's a great tattoo.
Like, I'm gonna get one.
Yeah, you should.
So we have some questions about taking action.
Oh, dang.
Yeah, they're really fun.
These aren't for us, then. Just kidding.
They're very serious. This one's from Facial Fitness by Jacqueline.
Yeah, give me some of that. I've got some sagging jowls going on.
Jacqueline wants to know, as we enter week number whatever of quarantine, how do I get my motivation and energy back up?
Dang. Great question. I'd love for you to find that answer for me.
Me too, because I don't have any of those things.
No, I really noticed this past week. I was like, huh, I feel good, but I'm just having. I was having trouble with my lifts. I was having, like, the last couple weeks. I noticed. I've just been kind of like, all right, like, how do I get this energy back up and going? Definitely for me, connecting with people on Zoom. Like, actually, this. Our podcast really helps me. Like, just. Even. Even if it just helps me for, like, a few hours afterward. Like, I remember how good it feels to laugh with people. So connect with some friends. Even if it's for 30 or 60 minutes or something like that. Gotta go move your body. Gotta go mix it up. Like, we might. As much as you can, get out of your house. That's huge. Like, Chris today went to Walgreens, and I was like, how was it? He was like, actually, it was amazing. Like, I forgot what it was like, to like, get in a car because we can, like, walk everywhere right now. And he was like, get in a car and go somewhere and move your energy around and just see some stuff. So just the littlest things might start to shift your energy. I'm trying to think, like, watching, you know, instead of just watching like, Netflix or something like that, maybe start watching some, like, really cool biographies. Like, I know Michael Jordan has like, a cool show on, like, greatness. Like, start watching people who have done really cool things to get you motivated. Just inspiring things. Maybe kind of shift into that. Maybe switch the book that you're reading. I know sometimes I'm like, oh, I feel so committed to this book. But if it's kind of making me feel meh, like if it's a little bit sad or depressing or it's just boring to you, like, maybe keep trying for different things. Definitely try listening to some podcasts because that can always shift your energy. And just know that this might be kind of a rough time and that's okay. Like, there's so much goodness coming out of it. And allow yourself to feel not motivated but still show up. Like, that's the ultimate, right? That's like the ultimate mastery, is to, like, allow yourself to be like, wow, not motivated but still showing up. And it's. It doesn't have to be like 110% for your workouts. Like, even. Even a workout that you show up for that's 40% is still freaking amazing. So that's what I keep telling to myself. I'm like, hey, this is not about. It's funny because I think that when you become like, a doer, an action taker, you can start to hold yourself to the standard of needing to make progress all the time. And I forget that so much of life is not about progress, progress. It's about just like being like, in. In staying in momentum. And that's it. Like, just stay in momentum and you're fine. Like, progress does not need to be made right now, so. Because everybody's kind of feeling that way. So if you want to make progress, you absolutely lutely can choose to do that. But why don't you just let yourself sit in, like, the middle for a while? That was the best. Adam just gave a drive by kiss on her head and ran away laughing like a jogging person.
So great.
Oh, that was amazing. That's how you get motivated. Find yourself an Adam and get a drive by kissing, or just don't find yourself one and drive by kiss people. I guarantee that you will. This is the best, actually. This is giving me life. He keeps popping in with different sunglasses on.
He's gone now, thank God.
It's so funny. Chris will do stuff like that to me, and I'm like, it's cute and it's funny, but it's distracting me.
Yeah, get out of here. Out.
I'm working.
But you, I love. I think all that was wonderful advice. And you know what it reminded me of?
What?
It reminded me of Anne Lamott again. Anne Lamont.
Damn.
Because her book is all about. It's about how to write. But she. She references a time with her dad helping her sibling on a project, and he said something like, oh, we'll just do it like bird by bird, little by little.
How you do it. It really, really is day by day. It's just taking it day by day. And honestly, that's what I've really dropped into with this. So that's been helpful. Like, so I just let the weird days be weird. I'm just like, you know what my goal today is? To get through the day. I'm not kidding. Like, Chris's goal was. I was like, is your day getting any better? And he's like, I mean, I'm doing things I enjoy, but I'm just off. And he goes, you know what?
I'm just.
I'm just making it. I'm gonna get it to my. I'm gonna get to my salad and where I get to have, like, watch TV with you. He's like, that's all. That's my today. That's my finish line. And I was like, God, I have so many days like that, you know?
Oh. Yeah.
So honestly, sweetgreen and Netflix tonight are what I'm looking forward to. I'm not looking forward to the big end goal of this company or selling the company, because there's a lot of frustrating stuff in between. So when I get really frustrated, I'm like, you know what? I can't wait for Netflix and my salad.
Heck, yeah.
So totally bird by bird. Anne lamotte. I gotta read that book.
You do. It's right up your alley.
Okay.
Even though you already wrote a book.
Well, it doesn't mean I don't want to read books.
Exactly.
Okay, Zackly.
Exactly.
Do you want another? Yes, exactly. Yeah, of course I do.
Too many people finish their workday feeling frustrated, drained, and unfulfilled. I know that. I have experienced that myself. And the good news is, it doesn't have to be this way. And you don't need a new job. To fix it. Patrick Lencioni, author of the Five Dysfunctions of a Team and more than a dozen other bestsellers, created the working genius assessment to help you pinpoint the kind of work that gives you energy, the kind that lights you up, and it also shares the kind that drains it. So over a million people, including me, have taken it and completely changed how I lead and show up every day. If you're a CEO, an entrepreneur, or someone who just wants to level up in business and in life, working genius is going to give you the clarity and confidence to operate in your strengths and find greater joy in what you do. Because confidence isn't pretending to be good at everything. It's knowing where you're truly gifted. Take the working genius assessment today and get 20 off with code. Earn@workinggenius.com. that's workinggenius.com. you'll be glad you did it.
Okay.
Oh, dang.
This is from at. @50ShadesOfDanielle.
Oh, Jay, you know what? She doesn't get bored. Gee, when she gets bored, she goes into the red room and just whips some things around. Whips and swings and dangles and does pilates. Danielle, Danielle, spice some things up for me. I need you in my lap.
Danielle. Danielle says how to put aside overwhelm so it doesn't keep me stuck.
Red room, for sure.
Get back in your red room.
What did you forget? That is to take away stress. Yeah, that seems red rooms to me, if I'm going to be totally honest, stressful, like, whoa, right down to the collar. I'm like, what am I doing here? Oh, my God. Is this a lion trainer's room? What is this? Hey, no knocking. Anyone who likes it. I just am scared a little bit. So freaked out.
If someone brought you to that room, I would be like, what's going on here?
The answer is yes for me. Now, for some people, they're just like, show me the red room.
But good point.
Yeah. Me, I'm like, show me the kitchen. We're gonna get wild and crazy with a bottle of wine and some crackers. I might let you have crackers in bed. We'll see. Yeah, that's when you know I like you. What am I talking about? I'm married. Like, so married. Like, the most married person alive. And I'm talking about inviting people into my bed with crackers. That's how you spice it up.
Yeah. That's how you get unstuck. You just answered Danielle's question.
Tell me your question again. I'm so sorry, Danielle. You Just gave us the best motivation with your title.
Yeah. She says, how do you put aside overwhelm so it doesn't keep me stuck? She's stuck from being so overwhelmed.
Oh, that's so easy. I am in the space. Let me speak to myself real quick so that I can help speak to you, because that's the only way I really know how to help people. Okay. You have to break it down, like, right down to. I'm. I'm putting a whiteboard in my office this week because I. I get really overwhelmed, and if I don't actually break down what needs to happen first, and if I sway and go to a new column before I am finished with what I'm supposed to do, then I know that one. I'm trying to escape the pain of what I actually need to do first. Or I'm just allowing myself to get overwhelmed. Because overwhelmed is an addiction. Just like. Yes. Is an addict addiction. Just like food is an addiction. Like, overwhelm is actually a state that you're really used to. So it feels as bad as it feels. It feels familiar. So sometimes, even though we know what to do because we've googled it or we know what steps to take, it feels too big maybe to do some of the things. So start trying to see what you can start with that's small. And sometimes you hit things that aren't small. Right. So you need to just do one big thing a day or a week. So you might be trying to fit too big of things all in really quickly. And when you look at actually how things are grown or move forward, there are a lot slower than people think. But definitely, like, there's some weeks where I think one thing is going to take a day with this company, and I'm waiting on someone for three to four weeks. So that is, like, so challenging. And that's what happens in everybody's stuff. Right. It's like, oh, I thought I was going to be able to do this, but now I'm. I'm here. And we use the word stuck, and you're not stuck because you can do plenty of other things to keep moving forward while waiting. And I think that's where a lot of people start to feel really overwhelmed, too. Is like, I don't have this yet. I don't have this yet. So they stop everything instead of going, okay, what is the next one thing that I could do this week? But I think I'm super guilty, and hopefully this lands for you, Danielle. I'm just super guilty of overloading my plate and if I would just say that I want to accomplish one thing that week and get that done and put it into my calendar, then I feel so much better. Yeah, so true.
It can be so hard to see the light when you're feeling that overwhelming stuck feeling where you're like, what do I do? I have no way out. But you do have a way out.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed?
Lists are my go to. That's how that brings me back, I guess. Getting organized. Because usually it's just like you said, if you can. If you say yes to so many things and then you build all these things and I can. I can procrastinate too. So, yeah, getting organized, set deadlines, and know that you are not the only one who feels that way.
Everybody is feeling that way. Everybody. Okay. I absolutely loved this podcast, so.
