Best Practices For Training Your Focus
13 Oct 2022 · 14 min
Lori Harder breaks down focus training through collapsing and expanding time. Write down distractions, face-down your phone, set 30-60 minute timers, batch tasks, and protect 1-2 focused hours daily. One hour of focused work compounds toward your goals.

Yes, more people can be a bit more focused than others, depending on how they're wired or potentially their brains and how they work or, you know, what they're dealing with. But you can get more focused. And the only way to get more focused is to first realize what is side tracking you and what is really distracting you and write down those things and slowly start getting rid of them and noticing them. Hey, everyone, welcome back to the show. It's time for another quickie because there's always time to fit in inspiration. If you are not on my text list yet, seriously, can't we be text friends? I send you some awesome texts. Things that I would send to my friends, things that I want and need to send to myself. For real, you guys. So if you want to be on that daily text list, I would absolutely love it. Just text the word daily. 2310-496-8363 I'm telling you, I sit and write out these quotes, little pep talks for my myself, and they seem to work for you guys too. So if you feel like you just want a little shot of inspiration first thing in the morning when you wake up, if you're having a meh day or you're feeling a little bit like you're feeling isolated or alone in that feeling, trust me, you are not. I'm probably feeling that way too. I actually get my own texts because that's how it's set up. And I'm like, damn, I really needed that. How did I know that? That's hilarious. So, you know, you teach what you need the most. So apparently that's just what my techs are doing. So, guys, I hope that you get on there and if you want to get off, all you have to do is reply back, stop. So no commitments there.
All right?
So today I want to chat with you about collapsing time and expanding time. So with that said, there is a lot of stuff we do during the day that ends up ultimately stressing the crap out of us. And I was thinking this today because I have a very long laundry list of things to do that have kind of found themselves exactly all in the same timeframe. I know that you guys can relate, but it's kind of like all of these great things are happening, but they just so happen to be happening all in one little period, one little quarter of the year. So. So what's happening is I can't say no to them because they're already coming, they're already here, they've already been in the works, and you kind of have to ride that momentum, and I know that I have the time for it. When I look at my schedule, my brain says, what in the world are you thinking? You don't have time for this. But that is me on the old paradigm of how I am working, you know, in the past or even currently, where I know that if I get focused and really look at the amounts of time I'm spending on certain things, I actually know that I have more than enough time. And even saying that out loud is kind of like, oh, God, of course. You know, of course. Like, you know, Beyonce has the same amount of hours in the day as me, and she's getting so much shit done. So is JLo. Oh, my God, you guys watch these documentaries and you're like, I don't even know if I could, like, handle a week in her life. And. And she does it all in stilettos. Are you fucking kidding? I am in slippers and pajamas, and I'm doing half of what they're doing. On top of, like, learning dance moves. Like, learning dance moves to your whole life. Imagine what you're doing, and then just pretend like you have to also learn dance moves throughout your whole day. Like, no, not going to happen. So with that thought in and of itself, I'm like, okay, Lori, you can do a little bit more than this. Like, you can start to catch yourself in the act of going and scrolling or in the act of, oh, you know what? I just need to another little break. Oh, you know what? I need my six sparkling water in the past two hours. Oh, you know what? I need to go unload the dishwasher. I'm looking at all of that and realizing that for those little moments, I'm selling my dream out. Like, I'm giving up my dream. I'm causing myself more stress, and I'm just not focused. If you listen to the podcast, you know I'm super honest about this entrepreneurship journey. And let me tell you, for most all of us, it comes with some serious anxiety. And I think most of that is because we're just a lot more uncertain about what's coming at us, what our day is going to look like, and what the heck we're supposed to do. A lot of times, we're learning something brand new that we've never done before. And recently, I found the best hack that's totally changed my life. For the last month, Soul CBD has become my go to daily supplement to help balance my central nervous system system when I start to feel anxious.

You might be like, oh my God, but I don't work that way. I'm not that focused or, you know, I really struggle with focus. Yes, you do. Yes, I do. But focus can also be trained. Yes, more people can be a bit more focused than others depending on how they're wired or potentially their brain and how they work or what they're dealing with. But you can get more focused. And the only way to get more focused is to first realize what is side tracking you and what is really distracting you and write down those things and slowly start getting rid of them and noticing them. So this is huge. Today I am working on a book proposal and I have to write some sample chapters in there. And it's a lot of writing. So I have some very, very like focused writing that I need to do. And I'm noticing that I had my phone face up and that every time a text would come through from somebody, I would just peek at it like, oh, it doesn't hurt to peek at it. Well, it does because it distracts you from the current thoughts that you are in and the current train of thought that you're doing and the thing that you're doing. And it takes what, a minute to two minutes to get focused again. So it's not just that minute you're looking at it. It's like a minute to two Minutes and maybe more, honestly. And somehow we look at a. And then we look at our phone and we go down this vortex and you're like, how am I looking at social media? Like, I don't even remember doing this. So we want to catch it before we do it. So what I've been doing is going, oh, oh, it just caught yourself. You're looking at your phone like, turn it face down. And if that doesn't work, what I do is I go set a timer on my phone for 30 to 60 minutes and I put it in another room. And anything outside of that, you know, if it's an emergency, obviously I'll go and see it in 30 minutes or 60 minutes. So with that said, what do you need to do to get super fierce on noticing what is distracting you and knowing that if you did get really focused and stop cutting all of these things out and remember that life still went on and worked really well for people in the 80s before there were cell phones. Like, we actually functioned and got all of our shit done in the 80s.
How? I don't know.
But now people think like, if I don't have my phone on me, I'm going to die. And it's simply not true. If you don't have your phone on you, you're actually going to realize what it feels like to live for the first time in your life.

So the less phone time or more focused phone time the better. You guys. It has been life changing. To start I started working with a social media person who I get all of my social done for the month and pre record and do all of the things and the posts go every single day and all I have to do is set aside maybe 10 to 15 minutes to go and comment on the things. I have so much more time now that I don't go on not knowing what to do, looking for ideas, spending hours every single day wasted thinking that I need to be doing all this social stuff. Oh my gosh where could you hire, delegate or even get yourself on a schedule you don't need Somebody to do what I hired someone to do. You can think of all of your posts in advance or 10 days in advance and get them all out there so that you don't have to be on social every day. Like, really look at where you are wasting time so that you can collapse time and get way more done. So this is just your reminder that you can do it. You can focus. Even if you just decide that one to two hours a day is going to be like this, off limits to anyone else time, you have no idea what one hour of focus a day will give you. It will get you so much closer to your dreams. And I want to argue that your dreams don't require as much time as you think they do. They just require these super focused times. Because I guarantee what you do in three hours with your phone by you and distractions is what you could do in 45 minutes if you actually, like, really got laser focus. Because I'm proving that to myself right now. I even just have more energy. I just feel happier because when I'm distracted, I'm not proud of myself. I'm really pissed off. I'm irritated. I'm like, you are not functioning at a level in which the goals that you desire are requiring you to play at. And to me, that feels disappointing. I want to be off when I'm off and I want to be on when I'm on. And I want to be present with the people when I'm around them. And I want to be focused to my work when I am not with those people. So I'm sending you so much love. We can do this. This is my pep talk. I'm yelling at me right now in the most loving way because I want these things for me and I want these things for you. I really, really, really do. We can do this. We got this.
I love you.
Have the most amazing day. One hour of focus a day is about to change your life. So you guys, until next time, earn your happy.
Bye, everyone.
Sam.
