How Failure is Actually Equipping You for Your Next Big Thing
30 Jul 2024 · 16 min
Lori Harder describes how her failed ventures, including a wine concept and Light Pink, taught her lessons that led to Glossy. She and Chris Harder argue that setbacks are breadcrumbs pointing toward your next success, not dead ends. Stay in motion, treat small failures as clues, and pick one doable next step.

You always have to stay in motion. Success loves people who stay in motion. Take the first idea, start running with it. If it doesn't work, it doesn't mean you didn't fail. It means you got started on that path and the next one or the next version of it is coming. And we're back with another episode of He Said, she Said.
We're actually recording in the car right now because there's nowhere to freaking get silence lately.
The dogs are being crazy right now. So I said, okay, let's go to the garage and record in the car. And so that's where we are. And it's currently 90 degrees in this car. So this is gonna be. We're gonna be detoxing while we do this, which I'm. I'm looking at it with a great perspective.
I love the silver lining there. So as we start every single time, what's your closey tip? Matter of fact, I'm gonna change it up for you. Forget the glossy tip. I want you to quickly pull up your website for glossy. Go ahead and get that started. Okay. And I want you to go to your review section. Cause this has everything to do with what the episode is today. Okay? So you just gotta trust me on this.
Okay, one second.
Want you to go to your review section. And I want you to find just the top two or three reviews that you are so damn proud of because they are awesome.
Okay. I'm actually gonna start with the latest one. So I'll do two of the very, very latest ones at the top. Oh, my gosh. These always make me want to cry. This is from Jenna Elle and she says great stuff. Five stars so far. I'm loving glossy. I am a licensed esthetician. My skin is my jam. I've tried Kiala Bloom, AG1. They all have their benefits, but with glossy, I've noticed my nails are growing and strong and my hair hasn't been falling out as much. And my skin has this glow and softness. This time of year my skin is very dry with all the sun and water activities. And I've noticed it's been really moisturized.
I.
That is so freaking.
Let's go. What was her name?
That is Jenna L. Jenna L. Let's go.
Thank you so much for leaving. That, like, made my day right there. Hear that about my wife's product.
I'm literally going to cry.
What's next one?
Okay. Karen O. Says I take glossy everywhere. Whether I'm traveling, on the run or just at home, I take glossy once or twice a day. The Packets are so convenient. At 54, my hormones have changed my hair and skin. I've been taking gloce for four months and I see such a change in my skin and hair. My hairdresser 15 years asked what I'm doing because my hair is never been healthier, shinier, longer. People have also noticed that my skin looks softer and has a glow. I don't even know what I did before this skin routine. You can drink, Karen. Oh, that is awesome, you guys.
Would you read one more for me? Okay, I'm sorry, but selfishly, I'm like jacked up on this.
Okay, let's see. This is Giselle D glossy. Has been my go to since it came out. Totally obsessed with this product. I take it everywhere with me. My husband loves it too, and he's not into supplements, so that says a lot.

And all of that success, like changing these women's lives wasn't ever, ever, ever, ever, ever on your radar? No, you were going a totally different direction. And today's episode is about the breadcrumbs that you can't see. And I want you guys to think back to the fable where you drop the breadcrumbs so you can find your way home. I forget what fable that is, but business is very much the same thing. There's a few breadcrumbs you can see, and I think God puts those there on purpose so that you start going a certain direction, but the actual direction you're gonna end up going 99 out of 100 times you could never, ever, ever see to begin with, nor could you believe in it. So he's gotta give you these little leading breadcrumbs first just to get you going that direction so you can see what's around the corner. See the breadcrumbs around the corner, but breadcrumbs. Greg Crumbs. Don't look out for Greg Crumbs.
But breadcrumbs are often perceived as failures. So this Is where this conversation came from is Chris and I were like, oh, my God. The problem is that they just quit too soon. They quit on the breadcrumbs when they're calling the breadcrumbs failures, when really they were clues. Like, they're not failures. They're breadcrumbs to the next thing. And so with Glocee, I had to start with light pink because at the time, I loved wine. I wanted a wine company. I thought that was sexy. I thought that was so much fun. I thought it'd be so great to get women together and have wine and discuss business ideas and just have this thing that we were all excited about. Also felt really fun and light and playful. And as I kept going down the road, it was like wall after wall after wall after wall after obstacle after obstacle. And I kept thinking, like, oh, my gosh, maybe I wasn't supposed to start this. Maybe this is a complete failure. What are people gonna think? I can't believe that I made such a massive mistake. Why did I feel like God gave me this vision with all of these women and these investors?
Cause you were certain on it. I wanna be clear. You know, you had certainty this is gonna work. This is the direction.
Certainty.
I had such certainty in my mind.
Like, God given certainty.
Clear visions, like tearful moments, like, brought to my knees, and then I couldn't understand why I couldn't get it to the finish line. It's because God's like, yo, I gave that to you. Because at the time that you got that vision, this would be the only thing that you would respond to, and this would be the thing you would understand, and this would be the thing that your community would get excited around to. Then go find the challenges, figure those all, and then pivot, get creative, see what the needs of the world are right now. Like, get it in motion with this breadcrumb, and then move it to this thing that's gonna be a lot more timely for everything going on. And not just that, I do believe that whatever you believe in, God, universe, whatever he was like, okay, honey, well, you don't have all the skill sets and backbone that you need yet for what's gonna come with this new company that's really gonna require all of you. It's gonna require you to be at a different level by the time that this idea. So I'm gonna need to throw you here and get you beat up a little bit in these turbulent seas and get you used to spotting when a team is good and when a team is bad. And Then when the stakes are a lot higher on a company that you love even more, that can get to the finish line, like, I'm gonna make sure that you're prepared for that. So you can do all the mess ups over here, you can do all of that. But as by the time you get to this company, that's gonna be a thing and people are gonna want it. I'm gonna need you to be at a different skill set level. And so that is truly with light pink, I got to learn all of the lessons. I got to see all of the different teams and people I should and shouldn't work with and for different reasons and what to be prepared for and how to set up contracts properly. So many different things that I just see other people who quit way too early and I'm like, oh my God. That was just getting you in the route of entrepreneurship, getting you in the route, getting you on the path.
Yep, yep. It's getting you into motion, going the direction where you discover the next breadcrumbs that wouldn't be on your radar. Other like, let me get real with you. I know where you were at at the time right when you're like, I want to do closely, I want to do something big. If the download you would have been given, so to speak, would have been, hey, I want you to make some powdered sticks or a skin routine you can drink. Would you have raised money for that? Would you have gotten excited? Would you have all that had all the key investors?
I just don't even think it was timely. So no, I just, I don't even think it was the thing yet. I think maybe it was. Even if this was one giant pause.

So here's my asset. The irony. You ended up with all the money you needed to launch Gloce in a big way because you first fundraised for something else. You ended up with all of the key investors with the perfect female driven audiences that value health and beauty. I mean if you look at your roster of investors you couldn't have fundraised from Better people that now promote glossy, right? But way more than if you ask them to promote alcohol. It's so funny looking back. They're like, these are people that don't really drink very often. They were just investing. It's like, had God or Universe or whatever given you, hey, I want you to just powder stick a skin routine. You can drink. You wouldn't have had all these people, all the money, all the everything in place, and you wouldn't have been excited about it. So he had to give you these breadcrumbs. You could see the shiny ones that got you into motion before, making you turn left, making you turn right, making you pivot. And so, guys, these are not failures. They are breadcrumbs meant to take you the next direction. They are not failures. They are breadcrumbs meant to just lead you in the next direction so you can see the next breadcrumbs that you're meant to see. I've got so many people. I've been running this elite mastermind for seven years now. And in that mastermind, it's people who earn $500,000 and up technically, but most are seven and eight figure earners. And I have seen so many talented masterminders over the year launch a course that they were certain about, but the course didn't do well, or it didn't sell at all. But then they pivoted and turned it into a workshop. But they were never, ever, ever interested in a workshop to begin with. But now they took the course structure, they took the information and pivoted into a workshop, and workshop's crushing it. And I've seen the inverse happen. I've seen people that wanted to start a certain type of mastermind or a certain type of event, and it was a flop. They had to cancel the event. Multiple people, they did all the right things. The event didn't sell, the workshop didn't sell. They had to cancel the event that they wanted to do so badly, but they had all this content and they turned it into a course or into a membership, and it's crushing. But they would have never done the course or the membership to begin with. These are not failures. They are breadcrumbs meant to put you in action, in motion, going a certain direction so you could see what you're meant to see around that corner.
And I think another thing is people never, ever get started on the breadcrumbs either, because they have like five breadcrumbs in front of them and they don't know which one to do because they're scared it's not the right one, and they can't figure out which one would be the right one to be the big one. And to that I say, pick one that feels doable right now or not even doable right now. Pick one and follow that direction until you can't go down it anymore. And then figure out where you're at and redirect. And we see that all the time too, where people just get so stuck. Like, I don't know which one to do next in my business, just do one and follow it until you can't do it anymore and then pivot it. And you and I have always done this, like, you always have to stay in motion. Success loves people who stay in motion. And I believe that the people in motion are the ones giving ideas. Have you ever liked, quit a job or not had a job or heard about people who don't have a job? And it's like, they don't have a job. And the longer they don't have a job, the longer they don't have a job is because people don't want to give people jobs who don't have jobs. They want to give people jobs who.
Have jobs already because they're already in motion. And being in motion is what makes you attractive.
And I think God, universe, whatever you believe, God wants to give people ideas who are in motion. Why would they give it to someone who's like, I don't know, I'm unsure. I'm not really clear on what I want to do. He's like, who's going to take this and run with it? Who's gonna take this and turn it into what it's here for and what it's actually meant to be in the future. And I think that's why ideas don't come to people who are just stuck. Like, get in motion, Take the first idea, start running with it. If it doesn't work, it doesn't mean you didn't fail. It means you got started on that path and the next one or the next version of it is coming. It's like when you think of all the iPhone updates, it's like you actually have to get an iPhone to get the next update. So it's like waiting for the updates, you want the final update, you want where it's already at, but you're never willing to get in the IPH phone game. Like, you actually have to go get an idea in order to get the upgrades later.
Oh, my God, I freaking love it. So listen, guys, to summarize this start following the obvious breadcrumbs that are shiny. Don't worry about if they don't work out because that won't be classified as a failure. Instead, it's classified as the breadcrumb that puts you into motion. So you could go down the path and see around the corner that you couldn't see to begin with. That will illuminate exactly what you were meant to see all along. This is about redefining the word failure into, you know, call it breadcrumbs into guides, if you will. Failures, not failures. Failures are just guides into the next direction that you're supposed to go. You need to change your relationship with your fear around failure. Instead, be excited that these are just illuminations of the direction you are supposed to go.
All right, you guys, we're so grateful for you and we will see you next week.
Thanks for listening. Love and appreciate you.
Sam.
