How To Be Seen As An Expert In Your Field
28 Feb 2023 · 15 min
Hosts Lori and Chris Harder advise listeners how to become recognized experts: adopt a multi-year, high-effort amplification strategy combining a heavy podcast interview schedule, teaching on other people’s stages, proactive PR/media placement, and strategic collaborations to borrow credibility. They argue omnipresence (frequent interviews, stage appearances, articles, and associations) can make you appear credible within 1–2 years if executed intensively, while cautioning many successes require longer-term buildup. The episode includes sponsor reads and a promotional CTA for a paid Roundtable event.

There is something to say about what is credibility. If you know your stuff and you're not growing, maybe it's because you need to grow the credibility to the outside world. Because if you ask people now, they do judge your credibility on numbers.
And we're back with another episode of.
He Said, she Said.
Okay, so we're always racking our brains on like, what are we going to talk about? What's the episode going to be about? What's going to be valuable to people? And I think I know what would be really valuable to people today. And let me give you some backstory. Somebody recently asked me. He said, hey man, listen, I'm working really hard to be the expert in my space. And I applaud his honesty, actually. He goes, I feel like I've got the swagger, I feel like I've got the knowledge, I feel like I've got the expertise. I feel like I've got all the it factor to be like the guy that everybody turns to in my space, except no one's turning to me. And I don't mean customers. He wants to be like the celebrity of his space, right? The well known guy in his space. He's like, no one's putting me on that pedestal yet. And I've been working at it for over a year. And I said, okay, well, let's examine what effort you're giving towards being propped up as one of the best in your space. And by the way, I want to start by saying there's nothing wrong with wanting to be the best in your space. I think everyone should want to be the best in your space. Everybody should want to be recognized as adding value. Everybody should want to be the it guy or the it girl when it comes to what they teach. Otherwise, why are you in it, right? So I really applaud this guy and his honesty and his question. So I said, well, here's what it takes to be the IT guy or the it girl in your space. Here's what it takes to be well known. It takes not a year, but years of consistent output adding as much value as humanly possible to as many people as humanly possible. He said, well, what does that look like in execution? And I said, there's four things that you can do if you want to quickly become the expert in your space. The first one you got, put yourself on a podcast tour. And a podcast tour doesn't mean you're doing a podcast a week or a podcast a month. It means you're being interviewed four to five times a week. So that you are omnipresent all the time in people's ears. Adding value. Think about it. The math on this is amazing. If you did five interviews a week, that'll only take you two and a half to five hours. I just got interviewed today. It was easy, 45 minutes. They asked me questions. I had fun answering them. It's the easiest thing. So five interviews a week where you're being interviewed takes two and a half to five hours. The average podcast, if you take the biggest ones and the smallest ones, the average them out, they have about 5,000 listeners. That's 25,000 people a week. That would be hearing your message. Let that sink in. That's one and a quarter million people a year that don't know who you are right now. That would be hearing your message. How cool is that, right? But people, they don't think of it that way. A measly 45 minutes a day, five days a week on other people's shows could put you in front of a million and a quarter people a year. Sorry, I know I'm ranting. Is this okay?
No, I love it.
All right, so I said, first thing you got to do, you got to put yourself on a podcast tour. That means an intentional effort to be on that tour. Second thing that you got to do, you need to make sure that you are teaching into other people's groups and on other people's stages. I mean, look, you and I just taught on a stage this past Saturday. I was interviewed today. I saw you being interviewed today. Both you and I are teaching on separate stages tomorrow. Now, this is not because we've already made it. This is because we intentionally make ourselves available. Hey, you got an event coming to town. I'd love to add value if I can. Hey, I saw you did this event. If you do it next year, let me know. I'd love to contribute. Because we know that the edification of teaching on other people's stages helps to make you omnipresent. So step one, podcast tour. Step two, you need to continually be seeking out and adding value to other people's stages and other people's groups. And let me tell you, there's nothing, there's nothing more powerful than somebody edifying you into their group that they've already built trust with. Right? And the third thing that you have to do, you have to get PR about yourself. There's so many articles now. Not articles. There's so many online sources. I mean, they are trying to fight for clicks. They're trying to fight for eyeballs they're looking for interesting stories. You can be the solution to that. You or somebody on your behalf needs to be pitching you all the time so that you've got at least an article a week that you can share about yourself that somebody else wrote, if not multiple. You do this three pronged approach. Other people's stages and groups, other people's podcasts and articles written about you for edification and for social proof, along with obviously, you know, the obvious thing being give good information. Don't give a half ass information. You give an effort at doing this for a year and people will say, oh my God, everywhere I look it's Lori. Everywhere I look, it's so and so. You will be omnipresent in a year. You know who's done such a good job of this? I want to give her a shout out right now and applaud her. Jen Gottlieb. And she is not shy about sharing this.
No, it's so good.
The world didn't put her on a stage. She asked to be on the world's stages. The world didn't write all the articles about her. She asked and submitted to have people write articles about her. The world didn't say teach into my group, Teach in my mastermind or come onto my podcast. She submitted saying, hey, I'd love to come on your podcast and add value about X, Y and Z. Yes, she did that ad nauseam for the past year. I've never seen anything like it. And she is what everybody would call an overnight sensation. An overnight. No. She worked hard to earn that celebrity giving good knowledge seven days a week, 365 days a year, and boom, now everybody knows her and loves her and knows that she's a credible source to go to. So if people take anything out of this rant, it's that you create your own celebrity. You put yourself on the pedestal for other people to see and discover. You don't sit around waiting for someone else to do it just because you've got the swagger or just because you've got the talent or just because you've got the correct messaging.
Yeah, I want to add, I think another great way to do this is to also collaborate with people who maybe are experts or collaborate with people who are in a similar.
So good. Yes, people have already gone. Collaborate with them.
Yes, collaborate with them, be seen with them, join their groups, go to their events, take pictures with them so that you're associated with those people in that arena. For me, when I was launching a book, it was so important for Me to be seen with other great authors who had great books that gave me so much credit so quickly. Taking pictures with Gabby Bernstein, Lewis Howes, Jack Canfield.
Great authors.
Great authors, yes. Going to their events. I went to their writing workshops. So it's like, whoa, she's really putting herself in Serena. And then it's funny, I had this same question at our live podcast, and a woman was like, you know, I've been doing this for a year. I just feel like I'm not as.
Far as I want to be.
And I was like, oh, oh, my love. My dreams are made in decades. Like, the first year, you're just figuring out who you are. And now I get it, because there are some people that it looks like they've only been out a year. And some people have, okay, I will say there is one in a million. It's probably more than that. Who will blow up in a year because it's something so niche. Maybe they know how to dance. Maybe it's a certain TikTok niche that they're teaching or something can be really niche that can blow up. But sometimes they have a crazy it factor or sometimes they have a crazy talent or whatever that looks like. And for all the rest of us who are starting from scratch and maybe don't feel like there's something specific that really stands out already, and I want to say it looks like a year, but if someone blew up because of something like that, where there's a crazy talent, they probably put 10 years into it. So that's what we're missing, is even when the people blow up in a year, they probably put so much time leading up to that moment.
I think you can do it in two years. I really do. I think the first year is honing your craft, amplifying your knowledge.
Set that expectation.
But yes, well, no, listen, if you're really hardcore about it, if you really want speed and urgency to be seen as the expert in your space, I believe you can do it in two years. I believe the first year is spent honing your craft, amplifying your knowledge, and figuring out your story and your niche and perfecting it. And the second year is getting that on all the stages, all the podcasts, all the articles, with all the other experts that are in a similar space with urgency, daily omnipresence. I believe you can do it in two years. But that was for the person who is like, give me that rocket ship. I'm going to put forth the effort and the sweat it takes to go that quick. Otherwise, guys, you'll overestimate what you think you deserve in a year or two and you will underestimate how great you can be in five. Yeah.
And it's interesting. I just want to say one other thing about looking credible in a year or two. There's a lot that goes into it as far as what does it look like to the outside world. You might have an amazing page on Instagram or TikTok that has so much freaking information. But if your numbers are low, you might want to look into getting into some contests. You might want to look at running contests with other people who you might want to look at paying to play. Because if you think you're going to be an expert in two years and your audience is not growing, the world puts credibility in your numbers. So I'm just being really honest that if you're like, wow, I haven't blown up yet. Well, some of the people who have bought their way there.
Yeah.
And this is like a, it's not a malicious topic.
Yeah, but it's not malicious. They don't buy their followers. That's not what you're advocating. What you're advocating is they put themselves in the giveaways with the, in the right circles where they're getting the right type of people. Yes. They're curating them themselves.
Again, because there is something to say about what is credibility. If you know your stuff and you're not growing, maybe it's because you need to grow the credibility to the outside world. Because if you ask people now, they do judge your credibility on numbers.
Jenna just did one the other day and she, she shared it.

Like people, it's right under your nose. If you guys look it was really cool giveaway. They were giving away an entire nursery. I think it was this company that does nurseries. So she's like hey everybody go to this nursery company. Follow everybody that they're following and that's your entry to win the nursery. And I went to the page, I looked into nursery gives away these really cool nurseries like every single week and they're really taking the people and awarding a brand new nursery.
People are the nursery is also growing.
Their brand and so think of who goes to follow. The people at the nursery is following is aspiring moms or dads or whoever it is that you're trying to attract so it's right under your nose. People are putting the effort forward to creating the buzz that they want about themselves. And if you're listening to this, you think, oh, that's, that's inauthentic. I'm just gonna wait till I've earned it. Well, I'll see in 100 years, actually. Here's the irony, right? I'll never see you. I'll never see you. And you can hate me for saying this or you can love me for. For opening up your eyes. I don't care what side you're on. I just speak the truth. Yep. If you're saying, yeah, I'll just wait till someone finds me, guess what? I'll never see you. But if you say, okay, I'm gonna do all this because I have a message that the world needs because it's going to make the world a better place, then by all means, amplify yourself. Amplify yourself. It's not selfish. That's why people don't like it. They think, oh, you're being selfish, you're amplifying yourself. Hell no. If you got something that's going to help the world, then you have an obligation to amplify yourself and get that message out to the people who are hurting.
That you have found that has helped you is because someone decided to amplify themselves.
Yep. So I feel like I've been amplified on this whole episode.
I like it. Yeah, I like it.
This was good for you. It must be that E shot I just took.
So this was great. Otherwise I feel like I'm going to cough, so.
