How To Imagine What’s Possible With Creating Your Own Mastermind Group
20 Sept 2022 · 21 min
Lori Harder, Danette May, and Danielle Canty built a mastermind with strict rules: one-hour biweekly calls where each person gets 20 minutes, plus quarterly four-day in-person retreats with 2-4 hour "hot seat" sessions. They credit the structure and commitment to collapsing time and deepening both business strategy and sisterhood.

It's great to join other people's masterminds, but if you don't want to join when it's already done for you, you can create these on your own. And that's what we're trying to really spell out what it looks like. Because that's what the three of you have done. You created what you wish existed for you. Where you're and we're back with another.
Episode of He Said, she Said.
So you just got back from Colorado and you did something pretty cool with Danette May and Danielle Canty. And if you guys don't know these two women, I couldn't wish for better women to be in my wife's life. Like, you know, obviously Daniel Canty is half of Boss Babes and Danette May has a, you know, nutritional and health empire and I think Empire's putting it lightly. But best of all, aside from the business stuff, these two women show up for Laurie and Laurie shows up for them in a way like I've never seen before. And if you ever read Lori's book A Tribe Called Bliss, you know, she talks about small self made masterminds. I don't mean self made, like people who got there themselves. I hate that term. I actually mean where you create the mastermind yourself. And so Laurie and Danielle and Danette went and did exactly that. So I kind of wanted to ask you about it, babe, because people don't realize they could put these together themselves. So do you mind giving us a quick overview of like, where'd this come from? Why'd you do it? And then I'll ask you about some pieces of putting it together.
Where did it come from? Danette and I were chatting because we've actually been in a Mastermind. We were trying to figure this out. I feel like we've known each other for like seven years, I believe, and have been in a mastermind together for seven, six. Six to seven years. And it came from a place where it's funny because I believe she was also reading Success Principles by Jack Canfield. And I was in Jack Canfield's Train the Trainer program where he talked all about a lot of his success coming from masterminds. I was like, what the hell is a mastermind? Like, I didn't even know what that meant. And in his book he also talks about it. So Danette's like kind of simultaneously learning about this and, and reading about it while I'm also learning about we don't know each other. And she ends up reaching out to me first is what we've kind of like concluded. And I was in the process of being told I had to be a part of one. Not in like a forceful way in like a while. I was going through this year long journey with Jack Canfield. He's like, you have to like choose to be in a mastermind. You can be in ours or someone else's.
Everyone should be in one.
Everyone should be in one. So I was starting to get put in one with people I didn't really know, which was totally great. But it was people who were kind of not necessarily in the field that I wanted to be in, which is also powerful. But Danette had reached out to me and kind of asked about this concept and I was like, this is crazy that you're asking me this right now. And if I want to be in one, because I'm trying to get in one right now and I don't feel like it's a total fit for me. And so we started one together with her who I had just met. And then she added another woman who I had never met, who she met in Costa Rica. And so blindly but kind of like knowing meeting each other Learning each other's backgrounds, we decided to commit to each other to see how this goes to every other week for an hour and separating it to 20 minutes, each person creating like a really solid plan for each meeting that we do. We agreed that no one could ever be late and no one could ever go over this time or we won't wanna show up, or someone will stop showing up because it just starts to bleed into the rest of your life and it starts to be a burden rather than something that is valuable and powerful. So with that said, we had started this and one of the women kind of switched out because we were just in different places in our lives. It was amazing. We did it for so many years and one of the incredible women kind of has gone her own way. We kind of went our own way. And then over this last year, Danielle came into the picture. And so with that said, that's something that we're doing every. We're actually doing it every three, three weeks right now. We're kind of adjusting it as our life is changing and as everyone's schedules are busy. So as you can see, I'm telling you this so that you can see there's a ton of different structures and support that you can do dependent upon what you all need and what you all desire. So the in person meeting that we did, we decided we were all in a place in our businesses where we really kind of have these big decisions to make and we wanted to all get together because we know the power of being in person. I really feel like it collapses time. So it goes from, you know, decisions or things that could happen over a month or two to really collapsing time and putting it into like a three day span. So that's what we all did. We got together for. We chose four days because we wanted to put some more like just different cool things in there, like healing things and fun things like cold plunging and hot tubs and red light therapy and saunas and all these different things that we really felt like were nurturing for our souls to hold space, for different ideas to come through and for us to really deeply connect. And so we did four days. You could do two days, you could do three days, whatever that looks like. But I highly recommend creating these things in person if you can. If you've got big ideas to get out into the world, if you've got big movement that you need in your business, if you're feeling stuck, if you're feeling stagnant, I mean, for anything, this will be good. So how we set it up was we made sure that everybody got a few hours in something called a hot seat, meaning that for two to four hours we would choose to work on one person's business altogether. So we put a whiteboard up, we said, here's all of the things that we want to talk about during this time. Let's try to hit on these and everybody, one person at a time, One person at a time. So everybody would work on one person's business for those however long you decide you want. So if you're together obviously for a shorter period of time, maybe your time on each other's businesses is one to three hours. We did about two to three hours per person throughout this time. So we separated it into different days and really sat down and tried to help that person create the next plan for the next one to three months on what we were going to do in our business.
Wow, that was a mouthful. You kind of just like slingshot, pulled back, took off, didn't take a breath in there. So I want to recap a few things because it was really good information. But I want to make sure people can actually build this on their own because I want to point out I watched you guys make this a priority. There's your first takeaway. This is not like, hey, we're going to meet every two weeks on the phone and then, oh, sorry, I'm busy this week. Oh, sorry, the other person's busy this week. Oh, it'll just be the two of us. You guys have built your lives and your schedule around this standing call no matter what, and that's the only way it works. Is that true?
That is so true.
Okay, so there's your first takeaway. If you're going to do this, you're either doing it all in and other things get built around it or you're not doing it. It's not going to work. The second thing is I noticed you have very specific timed containers. So for your bi weekly calls, they're an hour long. You each get 20 minutes. And just because I've overheard them in the past, you guys really cut it off at 20 minutes and make sure that each person gets their turn or once again, someone's going to start to feel like it's not valuable. But then even when you got in person for these four days, each person got a three hour period where all you guys were doing was focusing on their business on a whiteboard, working out their biggest challenges. Is that right?
Yeah. Non negotiables. The container is a non negotiable because even if you feel like it's okay to go over or be late. I'm telling you, you're gonna be in there with someone who does not feel that way and they're going to get resentful or it is going to start to mess up their schedule. Like busy people book back to back and they can't have something that they're worried about going over all the time.
Yep, that's absolutely. The more high performing individuals you do this with, the more strict they are going to be and the more strict you need to be with adhering to these schedules.
And even if you're not there yet, if you're like, wow, my schedule is really open. It's a good habit to get into, to really pay attention to containers. No matter what you're in, whether it's a zoom call, whether it's a podcast, whether it's talking to a friend and asking them how much time they have right now for a conversation. It's a really good habit for relationships to keep really clear lines.
Yeah, absolutely. Okay, so now I want to break down this in person event that you did a little bit because what I, what I hope everyone's caught on to is this whole thing isn't something that someone built and you guys are paying for. This is what the three of you said we need. We're going to create our own. And that's the point of the call, or not to call the podcast today is it's great to join other people's masterminds. I mean, heck, we run, I think, the best mastermind on the planet for people over $500,000 in earnings a year or more. I really believe ours is the best out there. But if you don't want to join when it's already done for you, you can create these on your own. And that's what we're trying to really spell out what it looks like. Because that's what the three of you have done. You created what you wish existed for you where you're at. Is that right?
Yeah. For this one. Danette really took the reins on this one because she, we were on one of our calls and she's like, you know, I am just craving, like really deeply taking care of myself for four to five days with like really healing foods and a great container and like letting all of these different ideas kind of come up and flow. And also we were in a place where we're like, we not only want this business relationship, but we actually really are craving a sisterhood as well. So we want, you know, we Wanted to not only drop in for business, but really say, hey, I'm supporting you as a friend. So the container also gave us so much space around, kind of getting really vulnerable around what are the things that block us in life, what are we struggling with? Like all of these different areas that, yes, we got together about business, but at the same time, you can't move forward in business if you don't feel deeply safe and supported in your relationship. So it was a both container for us. And I understand that that might not come forward for you in the beginning, but it's acknowledging that even though we got together, you know, with the intention of having this great space for moving forward in our businesses as well, we also. You can hold other intentions in these, like, oh, I also want to know that I have these friends outside of business who also support me no matter what happens.
I love that. So I want to give people an idea of what can come out of this if they take this seriously. And you guys came away, I know, personally, with radical radicals.
Yes.
Now, while honoring the fact that you're gonna protect the container and you don't share what you're not supposed to share, and the mastermind's really just for the three of you. How can you quantify what you guys walked away with? Or how can you quantify for us the impact? How did the needle actually move?
You'll see how the needle moved for all of us soon. In everyone's business and everyone's different, unique business. And I can honestly say it's things that it's almost like. I don't know how else to say it. You know, when three minds get together, truly, I feel like you're tapping into something that you cannot access on your own. I mean, think about it. It's your perspective mixed with two other perspectives and backgrounds. It's really hard to measure what actually happened because it's so mind blowing to me, the things that came about that I can see that if I did not go and do this, it would have been more challenging, I would have taken more time, I would have not figured out an incredible plan that I'm going to do. I wouldn't have felt as powerful, I wouldn't have felt as clear. So it's not necessarily measurable. But also I'm going to look back after I do these crazy, amazing things that are coming up, and I'm going to be able to look back and say that is where that originated. That's where that idea came from. That was the turning point that changed my life. And Business forever. And we're gonna do these frequently. So I'm gonna be able to look back and have these checkpoints of life changing moments because of the relationships and times spent spent together.
I was so excited for one, I could just tell the breakthroughs you're having. Two, I was so excited for you to get home and for me to see the change and to hear about the changes and hear about the pivots and all that. As your partner. I love that you do this. You say you're gonna do these frequently. How often would you recommend the in person part?
It depends on what you're doing. So you know, if you're doing some business together, I highly recommend like once a quarter. If you are all solopreneurs, if you really want that support and you don't want to be a solopreneur, keep it at once a quarter. But other than that, I really feel like 2 check ins per year is so powerful. Having them planned knowing for your business like okay, this meeting is kind of where I plan my, you know, next year and then it's also my check in for accountability for half of the year. So I think that that can also be, I mean if, even if you just can do once a year, it's going to be game changing for you. But if you want a ton of support, I mean once a is going to change your entire life.
And remember, you guys live in just. So everyone listening, they may or may not know this. You know, Danielle Cante lives in la Dannette lives in Colorado. You live.
Well, I guess we, I was living in Wisconsin.
Yeah, we were in Lake House at the time and we bounced all around. So there's power in saying I will get on a plane or I will get in a car and I will do this with the right people, not just the people who happen to be next to me.
Yeah. And if you're listening to this and you're like, oh my gosh, I need this so much bad, I would definitely say text this to the friend that you are thinking about doing this with. Just have them listen and see if it's something that they're interested in. We kind of just spelled it all out for you. So if you got this text from a friend, take this as your personal invite to start creating this really structured container where you're going to meet in person with each other once a year to four times per year, plus the.
Bi weekly phone calls.
And you know what, we did this at Danette's house. We didn't go stay at a Hotel. We literally did it at each other's house. Because let me tell you, even if you don't know the people that well, just take the risk to stay together somewhere. It's crazy. The conversations that we had over coffee or at night having tea or having dinner or whatever that looks like, or a glass of go and do this and let yourself be vulnerable and really drop in. I mean, what's the worst that can happen? You gotta get outta there in two to three days and you can't wait to get out. And you realize maybe that group wasn't for you. But take this as your invite, that you are truly being invited into this space that is going to completely change your life forever.
Oh, I love that. Okay, so now you got no excuses. You got to find the people, create the container. But you don't necessarily have to go join somebody else's mastermind or feel the pressure if you don't see the one that aligns with you.
Right?
