How to Know If Life Is Redirecting You
7 May 2026 · 15 min
In this solo episode of the Earn Your Happy podcast, host Lori Harder challenges the common belief that pain, failure, and loss are punishments. She argues that many setbacks are actually redirections, alignments, or massive preparation for a higher purpose. Drawing on personal experiences in business, relationships, health, and spirituality, Lori invites listeners to reframe challenges as lessons, asking reflective questions about the deeper meaning behind each difficulty. She emphasizes the danger of clinging to comfort, the importance of listening to bodily and emotional signals, and the role of a higher power or universal wisdom in guiding us toward fulfillment. Throughout the episode, she intersperses sponsor messages (Shopify, Indeed, Granola, Fora Travel) and concludes with a call to create empowered endings by extracting meaning from pain.

But a lot of times what we call a loss is actually alignment. It's redirection. It's massive preparation. The reason why so many things get removed is because it cannot go where you're headed, or it's something that's not going to work, and it gave you the lesson and you need to move forward. Hey everyone, welcome back to the show. It's time for another quickie because there's always time to fit in inspiration, and I just want to hit you right away with some ideas, some truth, and hopefully some direction for you today, depending on where you are in your life and whether you're in a situation like this right now and you feel like you're in the eye of the storm or very confused on what you should do, where you should go, what direction your business should take. Maybe there's just a lot of things following you that feel very misaligned, or maybe it feels like you're living the life of decisions that you made 10 years ago and you don't seem to know exactly how to move forward, get out of them, or create a life that you love again, then this message is for you. Because I know that so many people right now are realizing that maybe they are living a life that doesn't feel as aligned as they hoped. And so if this is you, I wanna give you some reminders. And the first thing that I started thinking about is the fact that if there are things in our life that we are holding onto that are not meant to be there. If you don't clear them, God is going to. If you don't clear them, they are going to show up in a very painful way. And it's important to realize that pain isn't there just to annoy us, and it's definitely not there just to be something that's like, well, life is painful. No, life is literally talking to you, and pain and rejection are truly purposeful. And so one of the things that I do when I'm in a situation like this— and I will tell you, I feel like my life is like realigning in some form of crazy, insane, but also like dramatic and somewhat magical way— that you have to be willing to look through the lens of someone who ultimately wants your highest good for you. So someone who wants to offer you deep, deep purpose in your life. They want you to have deep wisdom. They want you to have a life that feels very fulfilling. They want you to have a life of more. And it is the reminder that not everything that's being removed is a punishment. Not everything that isn't happening is a punishment. Some of those things are being cleared because they are not meant to be in your life. They're not meant to go where you're supposed to go. So the question is, is are we going to continue resisting this and looking at it through the lens of why is this happening? Or are we going to say, hey, there Is something bigger looking out for me? And what are the lessons and what are the deep meanings and purposes that I can reap from this? Because sometimes rejection is truly just like the phrase, sometimes it is redirection and things are absolutely falling into place. And it's gonna take a lot of deeper thought around what is happening, why is this happening, why is this falling apart, why is my business not working, why is this relationship not working, why could this not be working out for me in a really powerful way. I think there's a really big misunderstanding that, you know, our pain or things not working out are a punishment, and failure is a loss, and failure is a punishment. But a lot of times what we call a loss is actually alignment, it's redirection, it's massive preparation. And so I know a lot of people who have you know, lost businesses or feel like they spent a ton of time in their business or on a project or with someone or in a relationship for years and years and years, and it's like, I wasted so much time and money there. No, that's literally— it's almost like looking at it as college and college tuition. It's like, no, I put so much time and effort to learn those lessons. I put so much money into that business to now have a freaking, you know, degree in X, Y, and Z. Like, I know exactly what to do. I know exactly what not to do. And so the reason why so many things get removed is because it cannot go where you're headed, or it's something that's not going to work, and it gave you the lesson, and you need to move forward. But what we want to do as humans is we want to hold on. We want to hold on because comfort is the number one thing that we are seeking, except comfort is not the thing that brings our greatest fulfillment. It's not the thing that brings our greatest relationships. It's not the thing that brings our greatest joy. And anyone who is a gym goer like myself, who is obsessed with fitness, let me just tell you that comfort does not get you the result that you want. It doesn't get you the body you want, doesn't get you feeling like you want. And so I really believe that God is always looking out for us and he's going to force the lesson. And if you ignore the small warnings— Elizabeth Gilbert used to say, you know, at first it's like a tap and then it's a freaking 2x4 to your face. And if you ignore it, your body is gonna start to show you. And I will tell you, I have been dealing with so many little strange health issues lately that I'm like, I know why. I know what's going on. I know there's some things that I need to reassess, to look at, to move through, to let go of. Because if you ignore it, it's gonna be a little whisper at first, and I've had the whispers, and then it's gonna turn into a giant nudge and then a 2x4. And so a lot of the questions we should be asking ourselves instead of why is this happening, it's what is this teaching me? I talk about this all the time, you guys. Why is this here? If this pain had deep wisdom, if this problem had deep wisdom, what is it actually trying to get me to learn? What is it actually trying to get me to avoid? What is it actually trying to move me toward or away from? Because the victim questions absolutely keep us stuck. So we have to reach a decision point. Where we decide, are we gonna resist this? Are we gonna complain about this? Are we gonna be victims around this? Or are we actually gonna say, hey, if this was, I'm just gonna, I'm just gonna use these words because this can help me. This might not help you, take it or leave it. If God sent this, why on earth would somebody who has my highest good send this? What is the lesson I did not get before that only through this thing Me not getting something, me being ignored, me not being invited, me getting this illness, me losing this thing, the closure of whatever it is that you were doing. Why would this be here right now if this was sent from someone who is looking out for my highest and best intentions and deepest fulfillment in life? Am I missing something? Have I been completely unfulfilled and no matter what I do I'm not going to be fulfilled? Am I putting my relationships in a place where I'm holding such high expectations even the perfect person could land in front of me and I can't appreciate them? What is happening in my life right now that if this had some wisdom it could speak to me? I've been in situations where I have needed a new employee, a new help in my business immediately, and the last thing that you want to do is waste time on people who don't actually understand what you do. I want somebody who can come in and understand the workflow. They can contribute right away. They can help us move forward. They can help us scale. And that's why I'd use Indeed Sponsored Jobs. You know that moment when a meeting ends and someone says, let's remember to circle back on this next week. Everyone nods, but no one writes it down, and next week rolls around and everyone forgets. That's why Granola exists. Granola is an AI-powered notepad built for the way real people actually meet. Here's how it works. You take rough notes like you normally would, and in the background, Granola securely transcribes the meeting. Then it turns everything into a clean, structured, actually useful notes when the meeting ends. And the best part is that Granola works through your device's audio, which means it integrates seamlessly into the video conferencing tools you already use, and there's no setup and there's no awkward bots. It's just your normal meeting with superpowers. So you get to actually listen instead of frantically typing every word and still walk away knowing exactly what was decided, who's doing what, and what comes next. And I have to tell you that before using Granola, my meetings were very much the classic entrepreneur chaos where I jump from mastermind calls to team meetings to partnerships, scribbling notes everywhere, then spending extra time afterward trying to piece together action items or remember what we actually decided. So the first time I saw Granola's notes after a meeting, I was honestly shocked by how organized and complete everything was. It felt like getting my brain back. Now I can actually stay present in the conversation instead of worrying about capturing every single detail.
