One Big Reason You May Not Be Hitting Your Goals!
3 Nov 2022 · 14 min
Lori Harder explains that lack of specificity is a major reason people fail to reach goals: without clear targets, parameters (when, where, how often), accountability, and backup plans, efforts falter. She gives concrete examples—gym routines (frequency/duration/time/accountability), nutrition (80% rule, cheat/on-track days with limits), drinking limits, gradual wake-time shifts, and detailed outreach numbers for podcast appearances (e.g., ~100 outreaches). The episode also includes listener review shoutouts, Growth Day Network promotion, and sponsor ads for Shopify and Northwest Registered Agent.

If you don't have a target, you.
Don'T have any area to hit. You don't know what to hit. You don't know where to hit. You don't know how often to hit. Think of that.
If you don't have a target, you.
Don'T know where, what, when, or how. And you don't have a backup plan. Hey, everyone, welcome back to the show. It's time for another quickie because there's always time to fit in inspiration. And sometimes these short episodes are probably the best because like you can be walking around, putting your makeup on, getting ready for the day, and it's just like that reminder of what you actually want to focus on, right? Because I don't know if you're like me, but I can need that kick in the pants from someone else and that little reset because all of a sudden I'm in my to do list. I'm like, I'm tired or whatever that is. And somehow outside inspiration always gets me on track. And I just want to share a quick review because I like shouting out your reviews and I'm so grateful for them, you guys. So this one from Karen Pole, and she says, empowering, impractical. She took a long multi year hiatus from podcasts after having found herself addicted to them. She says she's talking 30 plus subscriptions. And she says, I've now got three shows saved and this is one of them. I'm a returning client and Lori was among the first to interview Zen Centero, which is how I first came across Earn your Happy. The interviews are great. I always glean some insight of what I wasn't expecting. She says five stars is not enough. Thank you, Lori.
Okay, thank you.
Because I'm telling you guys, podcasting is so interesting because, like you sit in a room alone in front of a microphone and you don't even know who's listening unless maybe you see it on Instagram or the reviews. So it really means a lot to me. I like to know what you guys like about the show and what you want more of. So honestly, I'm in my DMs all the time. I would love for you just to say maybe this topic or that topic or. I really love this. So more of this. Like, I love your input and I also just want to celebrate one more time that you're happy. Is now a part of the Growth Day Podcast Network. You guys, have you gone over and looked at the other shows that are in this network? It is marketing with Brendon Bouchard and motivation With Brendon Bouchard. It's the Boss Babe podcast. It's Straight up with Trent Shelton, and it's Women of Impact with Lisa Bilyeu. Holy cow. I mean, like, literally everything you need, all in one network. So you guys can go and check out the network. You can go to Growth Day, the app on Instagram, and you can go to the link in their bio and check out the entire network as well. Well, and the app that they have. So cool. Okay, so today we're talking about one of the main reasons why you might not be reaching your goals. And I can take a look back at some of the things that I am. Like, what the hell? Like, how am I failing on this? Over and over, I'm like, I'm kind of. It's kind of like not even in my life right now. Like, how does it keep going in and out of my life? Some of those are like my right now, my workout routine and also my meditation routine, they're just kind of like, there but not there. Like, one week they're totally there, the next week they're not. And it's not gone. But I feel like it could get close to being gone soon. Right. Like, walking. For me, I think I've shared this before. Like, I'm never gonna miss a walk. But I do want very specific goals around the gym. And that's what I wanna talk about is having specificity. I think I said that right? Being specific and having parameters around your goals or you're not going to hit them. The reason for that is because if you don't have a target, you don't have any area to hit. You don't know hit. You don't know where to hit. You don't know how often to hit. Think of that. If you don't have a target, you don't know where, what, when, or how. You don't have a backup plan. So this might be one of the blaring reasons why you're not hitting certain things. So I want to give a couple examples. So if you were setting a goal around the gym and you just said, I want to start getting to the gym, that is awesome. You're never going to get to the gym that week. You're probably going to go once and it's going to fall off. Because what's going to happen is you don't have a set time. You don't have any accountability. You haven't set a specific idea of how many times you want to go a week and for how long and when. I'M telling you this. I want you to think in terms of something that actually feels achievable. So if you've never. If you've never been to a gym, how about twice a week to start for 20 to 30 minutes? If you have a routine but you're just not hitting it where you want, how about three times a week for 30 to 60 minutes? And when, like, when do you need.
To be there by? So if you're like, okay, every day.
By 9am I want to make sure that I am at the gym. And then maybe you even go to the next level. This is where it goes. Next level. On this one, guys, you create accountability by hiring a personal trainer who is expecting you to be there or a friend, a very fit friend, right? You don't want a friend who's in the same boat as you who's like, you know what, why don't we just go grab a cappuccino together instead? Come on. You know you're doing that. You're like, oh, I could recruit this person. But you know that you might be.
A bad influence on each other.
Other. So you want to do this with that friend that you're like, well, shit, if I have accountability with them, they're not going to let me off the hook. So that's what you want to look for. Okay, let's think of this one. How about eating better, right? I don't know how many times I've said, like, okay, I want to eat clean this week, great. But then all of a sudden your food creeps back in because you haven't set like your normal food that you're eating that's not making you feel great creeps back in because you don't have parameters. So maybe you say, I want to eat 80% healthy every single day, and I'm going to allow my to have a little bit of wiggle room at dinner. So then you have this parameter, right? You know, what you're doing how many days per week? Then are you gonna let yourself kind of stray from that parameter on a Saturday or a Sunday. And then around the kind of days that you have where you're like, okay, I'm gonna let myself, you know, go have, let's just say, quote unquote, a cheat day. I actually like to call them on track days because I believe that those.
Are the days that help keep you.
On track if they have specific parameters. So I'm gonna let myself eat pizza, but I'm gonna try to limit it to three to four pieces of pizza. And Two glasses of wine, and then I'm gonna order a salad, right? Like, you have these parameters. Instead of, I'm gonna eat a whole pizza, or maybe you're like, you know what? I'm gonna have something that I really enjoy for lunch, so maybe just a really good bison burger, and then I'm gonna have a couple slices of pizza. So I know that this is coming. And you have these parameters that you know you're gonna hit. You're not gonna let yourself go too crazy. Now here's the thing. You're gonna go crazy, right? Like, you're not perfect. These parameters are. They're guides, they're lines that you're go stay in and do your best. And I have to tell you, like, the best thing you can do is start committing to that throughout the week. Because if you haven't decided to commit to your parameters, you're probably going to go outside of them. So it takes this mental commitment of, like, this is what I'm going to do. Yes, I'm going to go and eat those things, but this is what I'm going to do. I'm going to stay within these. Like, I'm committing to it now. And sometimes you're still going to go out, and that's just going to take grace. And, you know, knowing that you also have a parameter that the next day you get right back on, or right after that moment is done, you have a big glass of water, you're gonna reset for the night, and you're gonna get right back on. Okay, so let's go to our next one. I'm just taking common themes of things that people like to improve. So I want to drink less. Okay, what does that mean? Does that mean that right now you're drinking two glasses of wine a night and you wanna go down to one? Does that mean that you only want to drink on the weekends, but you want to also get really even more specific and say, that's two drinks on Friday, two drinks on Saturday, right? And maybe you have cocktails during a Packer game, like, you're all Packer fans. A football game on Sunday, like, getting really specific around what that is. So at the beginning of the year, Chris and I both wanted to drink less. So we said that for the first three months of the year, we were going to not drink during the week, and we were going to have two drinks on Friday and Saturday night. So we limited it to that, and that was a huge help. We also added in because we wanted to be really realistic that if there were birthday Parties or if there was like a holiday or something like that, that we were able to like have more cocktails on those particular, very special occasions. Okay, so having parameters around that. So now you're starting to see, like, oh, this is really specific. All right, so wake up earlier. Great. That's so awesome. How much earlier do you really think you're gonna go from sleeping in until 8 or 9am in the morning to, like waking up at 5? No, that's horrendous. Like, why torture yourself? So why don't you start with backing or doing 30 minutes earlier every single week? So start trying just 30 minutes earlier every single week and set that goal and see what you want to get to and be realistic. Like, you know, I've tried the 5am Club over and over and it just has not worked for me. I don't feel good on it. So I'm like, I'm going to get up between 6 and 6:30. So set your parameters. Make them realistic for yourself. Don't take too big of jumps and give yourself that grace and that space and that time in order to do that. All right, I've got one more for you. So I'm just using this as an example of some people want to, like, get on podcasts. They want to get on people's stages, they want to pitch a book. Okay. This is where you really need to get specific because a lot of you have goals like this. So if you wanted to get on notable podcasts, you're going to need to make sure that your pitch is good. So the first goal of that might be to make sure that you have a great pitch and pass it by some podcast friends or some people who maybe have gotten on other podcasts and see if they have any input for you. And then the next thing that you would want to do is write down how many outreaches you want to hit. So a realistic number of outreaches that you're going to need before you even get. Before you get onto a podcast. If you've never been, I would say 100 outreaches. Yes, you heard that right? A hundred outreaches. If you really want to know what it's like and you really want to have a chance, the reason why I'm telling you this is not to deflate you, but so you actually have a fighting chance against the people who are getting on. Right. So how many outreaches, how many podcasts do you want to be on? And then are you willing to ask for free feedback of the podcasts that are rejecting you? This is a really Big one. So if you have this goal around getting on a podcast, then these are all of the things that you have to get really specific about and know what's going to happen when you start getting into that goal. You just didn't get specific enough around what you want and how you're going to get there. That's what it is, right? So define your goals. What do you want and how are you going to get there? Because again, if you don't have a target, you hit nothing.
