The #1 Messaging Shift That Makes People Pay Attention
13 May 2026 · 16 min
Lori Harder argues that creators overcomplicate their messaging when simplicity wins. She cites Mel Robbins's The 5-Second Rule as proof that basic ideas become bestsellers, and pushes a "4th-grader test" for any brand message: if a child wouldn't understand it, cut it down.

So many of us tend to be wanting to create content, trying to sound so intelligent and so different, like, oh well, if I talk about that basic thing, they're gonna think that's too simple and I won't be able to charge for that, or it's gonna look like I don't know what I'm talking about. Well, I wanna remind you. Mel Robbins wrote a book called The 5 Second Rule, 270-something pages about counting down backwards from 5. What you're trying to do is sound smarter to impress other people when really the masses are buying and needing these more basic concepts. Hey everyone, welcome back to the podcast. It's time for another quickie because there's always time to fit in inspiration, and I have the most exciting announcement ever. I have to tell you that on June 13th, please mark your calendars, like pretty please. This is going to be the most fun event. I am actually going to do it. I'm going to be celebrating my 10th anniversary of Earn Your Happy, this podcast, and I am also going to be combining that with Natalie Ellis of Boss Babe, her book launch, Freedom Based Business, and we are coming together to create the most epic event with hundreds of women on June 13th. You guys, ticket prices are only $79 for general admission, and that gets you a book and a spot at our incredible event in Newport Beach, California area. And also there is a VIP ticket for $111, and it includes a drink ticket, and it also includes a photo op with the both of us, which will be so much fun. You also get a book of Natalie's included in that as well. It's going to be a phenomenal 3-hour event of connecting, live podcasting panel, and you will not leave without a new friend because we will be facilitating some really fun little networking breakouts. And dress to impress if you want. It's going to be such a beautiful evening. Come and make an event of it, you guys. I don't even think Natalie has ever done an event like this. Like normally to even see Natalie Natalie is like $5,000 or $20,000 for her masterminds. So if you guys want to get to be able to be in an incredible room with all of your new besties, and let me just tell you, if you're like, I don't know where all of my people are and I need to be making friends, this is how you do it. And we're gonna make sure that we connect you. So pretty please come and celebrate with me 10 years of the Earn Your Happy podcast and the launch of Natalie Ellis's book. This is going to be such a special night, and I hope that I get to see you. I hope I get to meet you. I hope I get to take a picture with you. Um, and it is in the cutest space ever. We're gonna have an absolute blast. We're gonna take so many photos and just have the most incredible evening and just really deep, real fun, funny conversations. So come and join us. Tickets for that are below. If for any reason you cannot see or find the link, just shoot me a DM and I will shoot you the link to the tickets. But grab your spot now. Tickets will sell out. Natalie just released it and we're already filling super fast. So I would love, love, love, love, love to come and celebrate because 10 years of a podcast, you guys, is a really freaking big deal. And it would mean the world to me if I actually got to celebrate that in a room with my listeners. Grab your girlies, grab a girlfriend, come for the night, come for 2 nights. Or if you're in the area, drive up. It's going to be so worth it and so much fun. So I also just want to chat with you about, you know, things that remind you of who the fuck you are. Like, truly, events like that, going to dinner with your girlfriends, going to places where people truly feel the same as you, they're like-minded, they have the same goals, they're going through the same issues, and You know, we were just on our Mentor Collective mastermind call, and I think some of the main things that come up, because we do those every 2 weeks, we have incredible coaches in there, incredible support in there. I have to tell you that one of the main conversations we always have is normalizing what this journey actually looks like. And a lot of times people will get on and just be like, you know, I tried this thing and it didn't work, or my social media is not working. And when we really dig into the reasons why it's not working, it's that the effort is not necessarily there. It's like, well, I've been posting every single day. Okay, for how long? Well, it's been a month. I'm like, all right, well, the people who you see who are really crushing it have been at this for 2 to 3 years. And if you don't like that answer, then this potentially is not the route for you. Because if you want to be in the world of entrepreneurship, you always have to look at how are you acquiring customers, how are you getting attention, and how are you getting eyeballs. And there's always a couple ways to do that, but it's all gonna cost either time or it's going to cost you money. So if you are the person who doesn't like to be seen at all, you're not willing to do what it takes in order to attract the eyeballs, then you have to either pay for ads or you have to pay for a marketing team, right? Like you have to learn how to do ads really well on your own and pay for those ads, or you have to pay for a marketing team who can completely do that all for you, or you become a master at social media and you put a year in, you put 2 years in, and even in 6 months you could be popping. Some of you try this for 3 months and you're popping, and you can be that top of funnel, which takes away that line of marketing, and you become the person who's paying with your time. So when you think of this, you're always going to be either paying with time or money when you are trying to get attention and eyeballs. And we call that top of funnel, cuz what happens is you always have to attract people to that very big top of funnel who are then going to funnel down into your programs and you're going to close them through your sales process. And so when you're thinking of your top of funnel, is it you? And do you need to be really spending more time there and mastering it? And I have been talking so much in Mentor Collective Mastermind about your messaging and also how you're posting, what you're posting, and if your message is clear. And so many of us tend to be talking to our peers and wanting to create content and wanting to create courses and wanting to create things for people at our level, meaning they're trying to sound so intelligent and so different that they're trying to impress their peers. Like, oh well, if I I talk about that basic thing, they're going to think that I'm, you know, that's too simple and I won't be able to charge for that, or it's going to look like I don't know what I'm talking about, or, you know, this other person over here is talking about all these really in-depth things. Okay, well, I want to remind you that Mel Robbins wrote a book called The 5 Second Rule, an entire book, 270-something pages, about counting down backwards from 5, and it's sold millions and millions and millions of copies. Which is insane. Like, out of all the books that are written, those are— that's one of the top books that has sold millions, millions, and millions of copies, right? Like, and it's these basic, basic concepts that what you're trying to do is sound smarter to impress other people, and also because you think you have to, when really the masses are buying and needing these more basic concepts. You know that moment when a meeting ends and someone says, let's remember to circle back on this next week? Everyone nods, but no one writes it down. And Next week rolls around and everyone forgets. That's why Granola exists. Granola is an AI-powered notepad built for the way real people actually meet. Here's how it works. You take rough notes like you normally would, and in the background, Granola securely transcribes the meeting. Then it turns everything into a clean, structured, actually useful notes when the meeting ends. And the best part is that Granola works through your device's audio, which means it integrates seamlessly into the video conferencing tools you already use, and there's no setup and there's no awkward bots. It's just your normal meeting with superpowers. So you get to actually listen instead of frantically typing every word and still walk away knowing exactly what was decided, who's doing what, and what comes next. And I have to tell you that before using Granola, my meetings were very much the classic entrepreneur chaos where I jump from mastermind calls to team meetings to partnerships, scribbling notes everywhere, then spending extra time afterward trying to piece together action items or remember what we actually decided. So the first time I saw Granola's notes after a meeting, I was honestly shocked by how organized and complete everything was. It felt like getting my brain back. Now I can actually stay present in the conversation instead of worrying about capturing every single detail. So if you're in a season of big vision, big conversations, and a lot of moving parts, Granola makes sure nothing falls through the cracks. If meetings are eating up your day, Granola is a no-brainer. You can try it totally free for 3 months. Just head to granola.ai/earn. That's granola.ai/earn. Earn to get your time back. Get 3 months free at granola.ai/earn. I've been in situations where I have needed a new employee, a new help in my business immediately. And so it's okay if you want to be someone who wants to create something super unique and, you know, is maybe at a super high level, but you have to understand that that market is going to be very, very small. Who's going to understand that? And most of you need to be kind of dumbing down your message because if you want to be talking to the masses, you have to be so clear that a 4th grader could be able to repeat what you do. They should be able to just say what you do and be able to tell people, and people should have some form of understanding about what you do. I use a lot of different examples in our Mentor Collective Mastermind because I'm always teaching different things in there. And also, I just did an hour-long messaging training on really getting so clear and dialing this in, in that training. For people to know, this is exactly what you should say, this is exactly how you should do it, this is exactly how you should be talking. And for me, I am somebody who wants to be creating brands and helping people build brands that allow them to sell anything that they want off the back of that personal brand. And so with that, that's what I've done my entire life. I've essentially created a really powerful personal brand that has been able to sell fitness courses, right? I had a fitness workshop. Then I was able to sell personal development courses and events. Then I was able to sell a book. Then I was able to sell a physical product. Then I was able to share my podcast through that. And the podcast has also sold millions of dollars through masterminds, because a lot of people come to our mastermind through this podcast. And so how have I been able to do all of that? It's been through creating a really strong personal brand that has a really clear message with core values. And so I am obsessed with talking about this right now because it's the only way that entrepreneurs are going to, you know, early, early stage from year— let's just say year 1 to 5, early stage entrepreneurs really need to be mastering their messaging, their social media, and their marketing on their own unless you have a large marketing budget. So I feel this is one of the most important things that we can do right now. And so you guys, I am also going to be coming out with some different trainings that are gonna be low ticket that you can purchase in order to master your messaging. But also, if you guys are interested in our Mentor Collective Mastermind, shoot me a DM. You can shoot me the word mentor and I can tell you about that too, where all of these trainings sit. But I'm sending you guys so much love. I'm so grateful for you. And until next time, earn your happy. And I hope that I get to celebrate with you at the 10-year celebration of Earn Your Happy and the book launch of Natalie's new book. Okay, you guys, sending you so much love. Have a great day.
