The ONE THING Between You and Everything You Want
9 Jul 2024 · 17 min
Lori and Chris Harder argue that everything you want sits just past a moment of discomfort. They use wake surfing and jumping in cold water as proof, then announce Lori's first collab with juice shop Bonafide on a smoothie called the Pina Glow Lada.

Those are all learning curves. Like, I played guitar for a while. I would like to play guitar again so that I have more things that I can do that are fun with friends so that I can sit around a bonfire and be like, hey, we should sing along to this. Like, if that's a weird little fantasy that you have as well, it's going to take work and it's uncomfortable to be a beginner and because it's more comfortable to just go with the status quo of your life. But I find when I go with the status quo of life that I'm just kind of okay when you could be living a great life. And we're back with another episode of he said, she Said.
Was today not or not Today was yesterday not the best, quintessential, like summer day you could have ever dreamt for.
It was the dreamiest, dreamiest lake day that I think we've actually ever had since owning this lake house. And it was like blue skies, warm water was warm, amazing friends were here, perfect wakes up weather, just the right amount of boats out there that don't get in your way but also add to the environment. It was so much fun.
I want to talk about that. Like jumping into water, going wake surfing, all that stuff. Like we have a really great metaphor for people. But before we do, we've been kicking these off with a glossy tip of the day. You've got a really big exciting thing coming up. What is it?
Well, I just want to share that I am doing my first ever glossy collab. So in Wisconsin, Wisconsin area where we are staying, there is some really awesome juice shops, Bonafide called Bonafide. And I love the owner, she's amazing and we kind of got to know each other. And she came to one of my events, girlfriends in business as well. And she's just a really awesome business person here. And we love the juice shop. Like we go and get shakes there, I don't know, a few times a week minimum. And I just reached out to her and was like, hey, would you ever want to do a collab? Like I'm seeing all these other people collab with products and with making a shake. And you know, I love watching all the different Erewhon shakes that are coming out. If you don't know what that is. It's a super bougie grocery store in la, but they do really fun collabs with different people who have products, celebrities or influencers. And I was like, we should totally do this. We should get together. I should come over to the juice shop. And we should come up with an amazing skin and gut smoothie. So that's what we did. It is called a pina glow Lada.
Ooh, I like. I see what you did there.
So I love pina colada flavor. And obviously at their locations, they use real everything, real fruit, real. All the good stuff. And so we went and put together an awesome smoothie, and it is a skin and gut pina glotta. So I am super excited if you guys are in the Green Bay area at all. She's carrying them at every single location. And she's also carrying glossy. So you get one stick of glossy in every pina glotta, and it's an amazing skin and gut smoothie. It's like the best little summer treat.
I. I like the flexibility of glossy. Like, I always put it in my vanilla shakes here.
Yeah.
And what do I always. Oh, lemon meringue. I'm like, babe, I made a lemon meringue shake because it tastes just like that.
It's so good with vanilla protein powder, you guys. It's delicious.
Congrats on your collab. That's super cool. And shout out to Bonafide and Nicole. She's awesome. And we have a discount for listeners only. What's the code?
It is code happy for 25 freaking.
25 off just for you guys.
Subscription order.
I love that. Okay, so go to getglosy. Com. Gloce is spelled G L O C. I get gloce.com use coupon code happy in order to get 25% off. So let's go back to yesterday being, like, the best boat day in history. Matter of fact, the best Fourth of July holiday. I think that maybe we've ever had weather lined up, the people lined up. Everything was just great. And yesterday was magical. Like you said, it's one of those days that you buy a lake house for, and you always hope for this one day. I mean, the water was glass, not like. I mean, literally like glass. It was insane. It was warm, everything. But most days aren't like that yet. We still go anyway, and we end up having a blast anyway, and we end up feeling so good anyway. And we'll probably insert a few metaphors here, but the metaphor that we really wanted to talk about today is that the fun and the rewards and everything you're looking for is on the other side of the shortest moment of discomfort. It doesn't have to be on the other side of, like, years of hard work. Maybe it is sometimes. It doesn't have to be on the other side of, like, long torture and struggle, it's usually just on the other side of the shortest little moment of inconvenience, the shortest little moment of discomfort. So for me, I know yours are probably different. For me, I'm always so comfortable in the boat. I love driving the boat. It's fun for me. I'm warm in the sun, I'm dry. I'm not missing anything. I don't enjoy wake surfing as much as you do. And so I'm not like, ooh, I gotta get back there. When's it my turn? When's it my turn? And yet every time I'll make an effort to be like, oh, Even though I'm comfortable, even though I'm not yearning to do it, I'll make an effort to jump in the water and give it a few runs. Because I know on the other side of that discomfort of, hey, I'm already comfortable, I'm already dry, I'm already warm. On the other side of discomfort is a new form of fun that I won't get otherwise. On the other side of that discomfort is staying young. Like, if you can jump in the water and go wake surfing, you know, I'm 46. It keeps you young doing those types of things. And if you ever stop doing those types of things, I think you wake up one day real quickly and you're like, oh, my God, I don't do anything young anymore. And the moment of like, oh, I've got to jump in this. Usually the water's cold, by the way. Not as warm as it was yesterday. And in Green Bay, guys, it's called Green Bay for a reason. It's a beautiful lake. It's a beautiful bay. It's where Lake Michigan meets the bay of Green Bay. But it's green because of the algae. And the warmer and nicer the day, the more green the water is. It's not bad for you or anything. It's just not appetizing. Like, you look out and you see this green floating in the water, and you don't want to jump in it.
And you can't see six inches into the water.
No, it's not like Lake Tahoe, where it's crystal clear or anything. Again, clean as can be. Nothing wrong with it. It just looks weird. It's not inviting. And so here I am, dry already, having fun, driving the boat every time, warm. And I'm like, I have to go drink. Or drink. Yeah, I guess I drink a lot, too. Every time I fall, I have to go jump in the water. It's going to be cold. It looks kind of gross. Everything about this is screaming, dude, just don't do it. But I do it anyways. And then I get the rewards.
No. This lake house has provided so many lessons for us. And I'm the same exact. I love being in the boat. That's a good day, just like riding the boat, but a better day that keeps you young, keeps you doing challenging things and makes you like. I think the difference is when you go and do these little bit of hard things, you don't get as, like, bored with your life and you have a lot more to talk about and a lot more reference points for just the way that you think, the way that you talk to people, the lessons that you're learning. Meaning, like, when I jump in the water and I'm cold and I'm like, oh, I don't know, that's uncomfortable. Like, I don't really feel like doing it. Yeah. Except you're about to go learn something new or have a really good time or get better at something. And the more things that we know how to do and that we're willing to not be rigid on and not sit in the boat and just stay there because we're comfortable, the more flexibility you're gonna have in life and the more you're going to up the percentage of you just enjoying your life a lot more, having more to talk about and feeling like you're living life more. Because, yes, it's easy to opt out of all these little things. Really. I don't really feel like it. That's truly like the default. I think of every single human. I don't really feel like it. I'm comfortable. Except all of a sudden in life, you go through your life without really doing too much and just doing the comfortable things. And that doesn't actually satisfy you.
It invites additional problems.
It invites additional problems. And truly, every time that we have gotten people behind the boat and they're like, oh, I don't really want to try it, and we convince them to try it, they're like, elated after. They're like, I am so glad you made me try that. I am so glad that you made me learn that. I'm so glad. This is the second summer I've come here and now I know how to do something new. And now I feel like I can go out with more friends. I feel like I have more things to do. I feel like I'm like a better person for learning how to do new things.
Yeah. And it's always the shortest moment of discomfort, right? It's not this long, prolonged. You jump into water, it's only cold for 10, 15 seconds and then your body adjusts, right? So we're talking like short little bursts of discomfort. Yet boy, they almost keep you out of the game. So you know, what's your burst of discomfort? Your short little moment of discomfort that you have to get over to get something you want? Is it maybe getting to the gym when you're like, oh, I'm already busy, I'm already doing a lot of things. But just committing and getting in the car and walking through that front door, that's that short moment of discomfort. Or maybe it is just going for that walk every day when you're like, oh, I'm already busy. For a lot of human beings, it's having the tough conversation. Like bringing up the thing is only 30 seconds of discomfort. Once you have the conversation, what do you usually feel? Relief. Progress. Less stress, right? So what is your thing of momentary discomfort that if you just got past that tiny burst, you'd be a hundred times better?

You know, for you and I, like we are, we are best friends. Like we could be together alone 24.
Seven, totally just on an island.
But one of our biggest desires is to have really close friends in our lives and a lot of community. And so that requires us meeting new people and not just going to dinner with them once, but keeping up with it. And also it's really important for us that we go and spend weekends with them because you know what happens when you like stay with people and really get to know them or travel with them. That's how they become your very close friends. Now everything that I just said is like, okay, cool, that's great. But when you're meeting new people, it's not so cool. And it's weird.
I'm like, oh, I'm already comfortable. I don't want to go.
Yeah, you don't know if you're going to hit it off or not. It could be a Wednesday night and you're like, you know, I'd way. Rather just spend this evening inside watching Netflix. Watching Netflix. Like, that's way more comfortable. But one of our goals is to have really close friends, and that requires meeting new people. Especially if you're in a different phase of life than your friends or you're starting to notice that you're in a really different phase, or maybe you're like, wow, we don't have people who. Who are in the same place as we are. Well, that requires you going and finding those new people. And, you know, one of the big lessons was learned at this lake house is when we met a couple people that we were like, oh, we really liked going to dinner with them. We took a major risk and said, hey, you should come to the lake house for a weekend. And a weekend here is like, three days. Because it does. The flights are a little challenging, usually four days. So it's going to be three to four days with brand new people that you have to gamble and go. Well, it's gonna go one of two ways, and either one we're up for, because the reward could be really great. If these people are awesome.
I love it.
And so we have had quite a few people come up and stay with us for the whole, you know, four days who are brand new. That is how we now, you know, because we did that, like, three years ago now. We got, like, two lifelong best friends. Lifelong best friends out of it, which is just so amazing.
Yeah. And guidance. She gave you great guidance. Pivoting from light pink to glossy.
Yeah.
Right. So that wouldn't have happened without that weird moment of discomfort. Like, hey, I know we just had our first dinner ever, but come up to the lake house in a few weeks. It'd be fun.
And also, like, the week prior, we're like, oh, God.
Yeah. We're like, oh, shit, what did we do?
Oh, my gosh. Like, I hope this goes well. I hope they like us. I hope all the things. So those are the risks that you have to take. That's the discomfort that you have to take. And truly, it's the only way. You know, when Chris and I were talking about this podcast on the walk, we're like, man, it is not easy to have fun, and it's not easy to have friends because it's so much more comfortable not trying new things or learning new skill sets. And, you know, right down to pickleball. Like, I want to get good at pickleball so that we have more things to do with friends. Like, I know for you, you want to get better at wake surfing, so that you have more things to do with people. I want to get better at golf so I have more things to do with people that are fun. And so those are all learning curves. Like, I played guitar for a while. I would like to play guitar again so that I have more things that I can do that are fun with friends, so that I can sit around a bonfire and be like, hey, we should sing along to this. Like, if that's a weird little fantasy that you have as well, it's gonna take work and it's uncomfortable to be a beginner and because it's more comfortable to just go with the status quo of your life. But I find when I go with the status quo of life that I'm just kinda okay when you could be living a great life.
