Your Thoughts Are Stealing Your Energy, Here’s How to Stop It FAST

Lori Harder says negative thoughts drain energy as much as poor sleep or diet. Rumination raises cortisol and kills creativity. She uses hand-smacks or rubber-band snaps to interrupt the loop, then repeats positive mantras to rewire the pattern.

When I feel like I'm in a negative place, I feel like I can't do anything. Negativity really narrows your focus. You see fewer possibilities and you take fewer risks. You play small because your brain is in survival mode instead of in creation. And it drains all of your thoughts and it drains every good outcome that could be out there. So let's talk about how to literally reclaim that energy. Hey everyone, welcome back to the earn your happy podcast. I'm excited about this topic because it has been impacting me and I know that it is probably impacting you in a huge way. And that is your energy and how we can 10x our energy just by some simple shifts and where it's draining you. So most people think that energy comes from sleep, food, or caffeine. And while a lot of this can be true, the biggest energy leak is often completely invisible to you. You don't even realize that you're doing it because it probably feels like who you are. And that is your thoughts. A lot of people just think that they are tired people or lower energy people or this is just how I am. But if you are one of those people who feel that way, because I felt that way about myself for years, I want you to take a minute and think how most of your thoughts throughout the day were lean because every negative thought drains your mental battery and every positive or grounded one changes it. So there's so much scientific proof that your brain treats your thoughts like real events. So when you are thinking of the things that could happen in the future that you are afraid of, when you're thinking, I'm overwhelmed, your body releases the same stress hormone as if you were actually in danger, as if you're actually living that thing out. So if you're thinking of worst case scenario all the time, you're actually putting your body through worst case scenario. So today I wanna break down how your thinking literally changes your energy, your mood, and even your outcomes. You guys. So let's talk about the science of thought and how that equals energy. Because every thought that you have triggers a ton of neurochemicals. So. So positive thought equals dopamine, serotonin, focus, motivation, and like a lightness in your body. I don't know about you, but whenever something goes right, you're like, oh my God, I just feel so excited. Like I could call people, you could run around. You're just like. You have this lightness where you just feel like you could run through a wall. Like you have more energy than you can possibly imagine. And then a Negative thought releases the cocktail of cortisol, adrenaline, tension, fatigue, burnout. And Psychology Today says your thoughts are chemical. It literally changes your brain and body chemistry in a matter of seconds. In a matter of seconds. So I know that you felt that a thought comes in, you could be doing something, and all of a sudden you just feel like, oh, God, like, completely drained. So I used to do this all the time with my clients at my gym. To prove a point, I would have them go and pick up a heavy weight, and maybe we'd be in the middle of lunges. Let's just say I give them 25 to 30 pounds, depending on what their fitness level was, right? If I'd been working with them for a little while, and I'm saying, we're gonna do some walking lunges, and I'd say, I want you to think of something really positive. I want you to say positive mantras in your head. I want you to think of a time in your life you've been really happy, and I want you to hold that thought while you're doing these walking lunges. I want you to do 12 down, and I want you to do 12. Back in my gym, and they would start the 12, and I'd be having them think of a super positive thought. And halfway through, I'd say, okay, I want you to think of something that you're afraid of, scared of, worried about. Like, really pull that worry in. And all of a sudden they'd be like, oh, my God, like, I have to put the weight down. Like, it would just completely consume their brain. Their shoulders would slump. They're like this ch. Just got so hard. I want you to try that the next time you are in the gym. And if you don't believe me, you can actually feel how that thought completely weakens your body. Because just like these scientific facts and these studies that I have looked up are telling you that you have a thought, it is a exact chemical reaction in that exact moment, and it sends it out as if you're taking a shot, a literal shot of cortisol, adrenaline, tension, fatigue, equaling burnout. So when you have chronic negativity or chronic negative thoughts, it overuses your energy system. And your body is constantly bracing for more stress. And when you feel drained, you literally are, because you're spending so much energy in that negativity, and you're getting that immediate shot. Every single time you think a negative thought, think of what that does on your body. Let's talk about what happens in your brain. So your brain actually has something Called negativity bias. I know I have this. The second I learned about this, I was like, oh, shit. This is literally such a great explanation for. I know what happens to me during the day. It gives more weight to bad thoughts to protect you. So if you notice that you find a negative thought, it's like you can just cling on and find even more negative thoughts. It's like, okay. Oh, why am I feeling anxious? Let's search in my life why I could be feeling anxious. Oh, I have a lot going on. Oh, that's due. Am I gonna make that deadline? Oh, my gosh. This didn't do well this month. What's going on? Is this program going down? What does this look like? It's like you just look for what is wrong and you find more about what is wrong. Why am I feeling this way? Let's find the reasons to back it up. But this constant scanning, what it is, is scanning for problems. It lowers blood flow to all of the areas that handle memory, focus and emotional regulation. So if you've ever noticed that when you're stressed, you just don't feel creative, you feel more fatigue, you feel foggy, you don't feel like yourself. You start to feel a little more reactive, uninspired. That's literally because you are sending that chemical cocktail to your body over and over again with those negative thoughts. So it's a rumination loop. So it's literally something that you feel like you cannot control. And I get it. Some people are like, this is me. I feel like I can't control this. And when you're overthinking or worrying, your stress response stays on, and you elevate your heart rate, your blood pressure, your cortisol, which equals, again, physical energy drain. And. And your body is burning calories and resources like it's literally running a marathon while you're just sitting still. So mental overdrive equals mental exhaustion. So let's talk about how this actually impacts your outcomes. So when your energy is low, your confidence, your creativity, and your courage are super low. So I don't know about you, but when I feel like I'm in a negative place, I feel like I can't do anything. I'm like, I don't know who I am. I'm not. I don't. I don't remember the girl who could do all the things, who had all of this drive, who just felt like she could get everything done because you have literally completely stamped her out with that cocktail. So negativity really narrows your focus. You see fewer possibilities, and you take fewer risks. You play small because your brain is in survival mode instead of in creation. So you see results that literally aren't going well, and it drains all of your thoughts and it drains every good outcome that could be out there. So let's talk about how to literally reclaim that energy, because this is gonna be one of the hardest mental games of your life that you are going to play for the rest of your life. And it never goes away because you are human. And like I said earlier, you're actually wired to scan your surroundings for what is negative for survival. So first of all, I don't want you to be like, oh, my God, this is me. Why am I like this? It is human because you are wired to stay alive. So you have to constantly be scanning, like, how do I stay alive? What's going on? What could go wrong? How do I make a plan for that? And in modern times, though, we just are not. We're not obviously going to be eaten by a tiger. But now we're scanning for why we're stressed and what could go wrong in our business and what could go wrong in relationships. So it's kind of flipped on its head with what we're stressed out about, but it's all still the same. It's all still survival. So the biggest thing that you have to catch is those negative thoughts. You have to notice them, you have to identify them, and you have to just say, this is just a thought, not the truth. And what you want to do is, like, interrupt that pattern. And so something that I do. I learned this from Gabby Bernstein when I used to listen back in the day. All of the time, like, I was obsessed with what she taught because this was really what helped me rewire my brain in the beginning. And you can't be in manifesting mode. You can't be in creative mode. I learned really early on if you are in survival mode. And so what I would do is I noticed I had started. I had started running. Like, I would run six miles two to three times a week. And I noticed how many negative thoughts would come into my head because, like I told you about the workout, a negative thought would come in my head and I would immediately notice that I didn't want to run anymore. It's like I had no energy. I would slow down. I'd slow down to, like, a grandma trot. And I was like, well, wow. I noticed how these negative thoughts are impacting me more than I can possibly tell you. So I was like, a negative thought would come in I kind of do a clap. Like I'd smack the back of my hand on my other hand and I'd say, nope, this is not the thought that I want to be thinking. Replace it with with a positive thought. And sometimes on a run I would do this. Like if you saw me running, you'd be like, okay, that's. What is this girl doing? You'd probably notice that I'm like smacking the back of my hand over and over and saying nope out loud. You know, I have earbuds in my ears, but I'm literally reprogramming myself over and over on this run. If you want to know what I really did, this is what I really did every single week. Then I probably smacked my hand a hundred times on each run and said, nope. Like, nope. Replace this thought. This is not what I want to be thinking. This is not a positive, purposeful, productive thought. And then I would replace it with something positive. What do I want to be thinking? And I'd scan for what I want to be thinking. Or I'd already have a mantra ready in my head because you have to have something easy to grab. And then I would say that over and over and over and over again because you have to interrupt the pattern of the negativity. So you have to reframe that thought and shift focus and energy to producing positive thoughts. You have to feed your brain something positive. And this is truly like something you have to do on repeat over and over and over again until you start to notice that you are not thinking as negative. And depending upon the place you are in your life or what is happening, you may think that you've got this down and you're like, okay, I've got this. You know, the negative thoughts feel like they're really at bay. And then something hits you like a truck because that's what life does. And those thoughts start creeping in again and you have to start being that hand smacker all over again hundreds of times a day.

So you guys, the thoughts that you think aren't just coming in they're not free. It's not like, oh, this isn't hurting anything. It's literally costing you everything. It's costing you your energy. And when I say everything, I mean it, because your energy is what creates everything good in your life. So you really literally need to protect your brain. And you can't out supplement a stressed brain. You literally have to do the work mentally by replacing the thoughts. So if you want to 10x your energy, you have to start with that inner dialogue and start noticing where you can 10x doing positive mantras and replacing those thoughts with positive things. So if you really realize that your thoughts are all chemical, every time you start thinking a negative thought, it's literally affecting and infecting your body with negativity and pulling your energy. So you're taking a negative, like, cocktail shot of chemicals that are impacting you. And. And so I really need you to start to realize how important it is to do the hand smack, or what a lot of people used to do was they'd put a rubber band around their wrist and smack it, like, pull it every time that a negative thought comes in to interrupt that thought and go, look at me, like, thinking these negative thoughts every couple minutes or every 30 seconds and really starting to learn how to focus on the positive thought. But here's the deal. If you're consistently thinking one negative thought, like, you are incapable of doing something in your life or creating something in your life, I need you to replace that with possibility. Like, you need a mantra that you can grab. So if it's like, oh, my gosh, I'm never going to be able to do this. I'm never going to be able to get my business out of the position it's in. You need to say something like, no, I'm choosing to see possibility over problems. I always see possibility over problems. Dear God, help me see possibility over problems. Oh, this is a huge thing that I do not want to miss. Whenever I have these negative thoughts, I like to say, God forgive me for this negative thought, or, I'm replacing this negative thought. Or, please take away this negative thought, I'm replacing it with this positive thought. Like, I don't believe that I'm doing this on my own. And that is one of the biggest things that I can possibly tell you, is that I know that there is a strength greater in my life that is trying to help me with this. And I rely on that strength. Because if I'm just relying on me. When you are relying on your own strength is when you feel the weakest. And so I'm like, God, please take this negative thought from me and I replace it with this thought, and that's what I'm going to focus on. So you guys, also, food and sleep is really huge around this time when you are stressed out. And I'm telling you, taking care of yourself is massive. That is one of the biggest reasons that I have taken care of myself through the years is because it's going to help you with stress. It's going to help you with those positive thoughts. It's going to help you stay on track and not feel like you're behind the eight ball because you just feel awful from sugar and alcohol and all the things. So you guys find something that's easy for you to eat every day. Like, even if you have to eat it on repeat. I saw something. Yes. On Instagram, but it was a woman who was super fit in her 50s and she said most people who are fit in their 40s and 50s have just found things that work for food that are healthy and they do it on repeat. They really do it frequently so that it's easier for them. And you guys, I have been somebody who has always had the same, like, I'm a huge griller. I'm huge into shakes. If you know me. I've been having the same isagenic shake for the past 15 years, like, at least once a day because it's easy, it's on repeat. Glossy is one of my go to because it has zinc in, it has magnesium, it has the probiotic. It is huge. It's why I created it. You guys, if you want to try it, it's 20. You can get 25% off for being a podcast listener. You can use code happy. Go get a few things that you can do that are so healthy for yourself that you can put on repeat that are just gonna help you stay on track and give you that edge that's gonna help you think even better. Because if you're feeding yourself stuff that's robbing your energy, this is gonna be even harder to do. So see if you can start getting that dialed in, because sometimes that's the first domino that needs to tip to make yourself feel better. So. So, you guys, I'm sending you so much love. And until next time, earn your happy. Bye, everyone.
