A short excerpt from Louis Massaro's YouTube video "How To Cultivate Leadership" focusing on the role of self-confidence in leadership. Massaro argues that without confidence people won't step up or take initiative; leaders must protect their own confidence daily and actively help team members build theirs by providing tools, reassurance, feedback, and visible proof of progress ("planting" and "nourishing" seeds).
If we're not confident in what we're doing, we're not going to step up, we're not going to take initiative. Right. We're not going to lead others. And that's the same for the people that you lead. So not only do you need to protect your confidence every single day, you need to help your team build self confidence by giving them the tools, the reassurement, the, you know, showing the proof of what's working. Acknowledge them when they're doing a good job. You're planting seeds, you're nourishing seeds, you're helping that grow. And that self confidence is huge. To be able to get you to that place where you need to be and cultivate leaders.
