Louis Massaro advises owners/managers to set a clear one-year objective to remove themselves from daily operations. He recommends breaking that annual goal into quarterly objectives, building supporting systems and people, and making the one-year target visible and revisited daily. Massaro emphasizes that these actions both enable delegation and increase business profitability.

First step is you've got to create a one year objective for yourself. In the next 12 months, you're going to remove yourself from the day to day. You've got to set an objective for the year and then from that objective for the year, you've got to break that down in the quarterly objectives. We need to set up the systems and the people around us and make sure that they know what they're doing and they're well supported. To be able to continue to execute better than you did while you were doing the job with this. The acts that you take doing this, everything that you take to do this will also build your business and make you more profitable at the same time. So you've got that one year target, right? I want you to put that somewhere visible that you look at it every day and you know that's what you're working towards and you believe it's possible. One year is plenty of time on top of all the day to day stuff that you need to do to start removing yourself.
