Men Don't Fall in Love First... They Crave Something Else

Brody Boyd argues men don't fall in love through effort or affection. They crave respect, the chance to be heroes, and women who show vulnerability and need them. Love follows commitment, not the other way around.

You have loved him harder than anyone ever has, and he still keeps you at arm's length. I've spent over a decade studying how men actually fall in love, and here's what almost no one will tell you: he was never going to fall for how much you do for him. He falls for something else entirely. In the next few minutes, I'm going to show you the real way a man falls in love, what he is quietly craving long before the word love ever crosses his mind, and number 10 is the one almost no woman believes until I'm Brody Boyd, and together with my wife, Antia, we've been helping thousands of successful women for over 20 years combined to get a loving, long-term, and committed relationship with a man they want fast. So let's get into it. Number 1, he has to feel respected before he can love you. Respect is a man's love language. Do you want to know the number 1 thing a man craves from a woman? Well, I'll tell you first what it's not. It's not love. And I know that may sound crazy to you, but Ephesians 5:33 in the Bible also spells this out directly. Husbands, love your wives. Wives, respect your husbands. The feminine craves to be loved. The masculine craves to be respected. There are different currencies in relationships. And if you keep paying him in the currency that you want to receive instead of the currency that he actually needs, It's like going to Japan and trying to pay for sushi with Mexican pesos. It just doesn't work. But here's where it gets messy. You think, well, I love him, so of course I respect him. But then you spend the entire car ride telling him he's driving too slow or too fast, or that he should take a better route. You tell him what to do rather than ask him what to do. You energetically penetrate him. You give him helpful suggestions that are really just criticisms wearing a nice sweater. He's not your fixer-upper on HGTV. He's a man, and a man would rather feel unloved than disrespected. Number 2, he falls for the woman who makes him feel like her hero, not her project. So it's very important that you help your man to develop this purpose and meaning. You can't do it for him, and never do you want to be his therapist or his mommy, because that's only going to push him further away, make him feel more disrespected and more like a child. However, what you can do is allow him to have a purpose in the relationship. So even if he can't be leading the entire planet or leading a whole country or building an empire of businesses, he can still have a purpose in your family. He can still have a purpose in your relationship, knowing that he can make you happy, that he can provide, that he can give, that he can be the hero for somebody. And ideally, the people around him in his community as well will start to expand into that the more he does that for you. So How do you do this? You start to ask him for help. You start to help him to help you. Give him problems to solve. Sharing problems is feminine. Solving problems is masculine. So by sharing problems that he can solve in a respectful way, giving him those things that he can help you with, whether that's giving you advice, helping fix something for you, helping you navigate a situation in your relationship, he can provide those solutions and he can start to feel like a hero. That he can be a hero for you, that he can have value, and that he can serve a purpose. Number 3, he is not falling for your effort. He is falling for how you receive him. And when you can't receive, a man can feel it. He offers help and you tense up. He wants to plan and you take over. He wants to give and you minimize it. He wants to step up and you hover over him like a helicopter mom at a middle school dance. A masculine man falls in love with you through giving, through investing, through solving, through protecting, through providing for you, through feeling that his energy actually lands somewhere and is appreciated. If you keep blocking all of that because you're so hyper-independent and braced all the time, don't be surprised when he stops trying. The feminine is receptive. The feminine is open. The feminine is like the magnet attracting the paperclip to her, not the magnet chasing the paperclip around with sneakers Yelling, why won't you stay close to me? And let me be clear with this: receiving does not mean becoming helpless. It means becoming available to masculine support, care, effort, leadership, and love. That's a huge part of what women have to relearn, especially if they've been in boss babe mode for years. If you can't relax, he can never really get to feel like the man with you. 4. A man craves the woman who needs him. Not the one who simply chooses him. Here's the counterintuitive part that most women get wrong about this, though. The way to activate this is not to be the fiercely independent boss babe who handles everything herself and never needs a thing from anyone. Because if he perceives you as a woman who doesn't need him, he doesn't feel needed. And a man who doesn't feel needed doesn't feel like a man. He feels like a roommate with a lease he's too polite to break. What activates his hero instinct is your vulnerability. Opening your heart, sharing what is actually going on for you, asking for his help. Something like, may I ask you something? I'm feeling some sadness about a situation right now, and I honestly don't know what to do about it. Then, STFU and wait for his response. That's it. That kind of open, feminine honesty is like lighting a match in his chest. It activates something ancient in his masculine DNA. Suddenly, you're not a problem that he needs to manage. You are a heart that he wants to protect. Now, one of our clients, Kelsey, shared something powerful that really stuck with me. She was on a trip with her man and things went sideways between them. She said that she stood in front of the mirror, reminded herself that she is a queen, and made a conscious decision to relax into her femininity and stop trying to control everything. And in her own words, she said, me relaxing into my femininity opened up the lanes for his masculinity to respond. Her man then came through for her for the rest of the trip, Beautifully. Number 5, men love backwards. His deepest feelings show up after he commits, not before it. There are some good ways you can give him easy wins, easy ways he can start to serve you in small ways and then in bigger ways so that he's investing into the relationship. He gets appreciated at the end of it, so he feels really good. And even something as basic as changing a light bulb for you— we had a girlfriend of ours who she was dating this guy and she was moving out of her house and she just said to him, you know, I'm moving out of my house. Is there any chance you could help me with moving some things out? And he's like, of course I could help you with that. And so he came down and he actually ended up getting things out of her house for her. It was really actually easy for him because he had a truck and he had muscles. He knew how to do it. And at the end he was just like, that was easy. And they went on a date afterwards and That was one of the things that really started to bond him to her because he could see, wow, I can make this woman happy. I have something to provide for her. I feel valued for what I have to offer, and it was easy for me. I didn't even have to really try. And then she's so grateful, she's so appreciative, and wow, I want to be part of a relationship that is this easy for me to win. Number 6, he shows you he is falling long before he ever says it. Watch what he does, not what he says. Ask him for his advice on something real. Ask him to fix something, figure something out, solve a problem that you're genuinely stuck on. Ask him to help you carry something heavy, literally or figuratively. And then watch his entire energy. Does he step up? Does he light up? Does he sit up a little straighter and shift into full problem-solving mode? Or does he give you the full Rhett Butler moment? Looks you dead in the eye, pauses dramatically, and says, Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn. Except Rhett said it at the end of a 3-hour movie. This guy said it 30 seconds into you asking for help assembling a bookshelf. Now here's why this matters so much. Masculine energy is designed to give, provide, and solve. At his deepest core, a man with real intent towards you wants to be your hero, not because he's auditioning for a Hallmark Christmas movie, but because when a woman he actually values trusts him enough to need him, Something fundamental in his masculine core activates. He comes alive. Number 7, he won't announce it. He just quietly starts making plans that include you. One of our clients, Krista, shared something beautiful with us. She told me about the man she was seeing, and she described what consistent investment looked like for the first time in her life. She said, he showed up when I had the flu. He made me soup. He rubbed my back. He told me he thought I was worth it. And then she said the line that hit me. He has a whole list of places that he wants to take me this fall. A whole list. Not because she demanded it, but because his investment was genuine and it kept building from there. That is what it looks like. It accumulates. It grows. It doesn't just get rationed out like he's playing a real-life game of Hansel and Gretel with your heart, dropping one breadcrumb after one breadcrumb every 3 weeks and somehow expecting you to act like he just proposed with a whole baguette. Number 8, when a man is truly falling, he starts saying certain things without ever meaning to. This is what everything in this video has been building towards. Because a man who holds your emotions without flinching, keeps himself together without making you carry him, shows up consistently, gives without keeping score, loves being your hero, and leads the relationship forward with real intention— that man eventually arrives at this moment. A quiet, completely unmistakable moment of clarity for him. And in that moment, he looks at his life and he thinks, I cannot imagine a future that doesn't have her in it. I know this moment because I lived it with my wife, Antia. When we were in our exclusive dating period but not yet engaged, there was a point in that season when I was sitting with her, she was in my apartment in San Francisco, and this feeling came over me. It was quiet, it was clear, but it was impossible to argue with. I could not picture a future without her in it. And the moment I had that thought, commitment to her Wasn't scary to me anymore. It was actually obvious. That is how deep love works in a man. Number 9, a man does not claim a woman he is unsure about. This is what makes him decide you are the one. And when a man arrives at that point, he doesn't just keep it as a whispered secret. He doesn't treat you like a limited series on Netflix, compelling for 3 episodes, but with no season 2. He names it, he claims it, he tells his friends, and he tells his family. He makes it unmistakably, publicly, officially clear that you are his. He claims you. He doesn't hide you. He doesn't leave you wondering. He chooses you out loud, publicly, fully. Because a man who deeply loves you is simply not willing to gamble with the possibility of losing you. And when you feel that from a man, when you feel truly chosen, claimed, and kept, you don't need to look for signs anymore. You already know. Number 10, the one thing he craves more than your looks, more than your body, and more than everything you do for him. And if you think I'm about to talk about whether you wore the right dress, had the perfect body, or looked just mysterious enough under restaurant lighting, you're missing the whole point. The biggest drops in value usually have nothing to do with whether you're hot enough. They happen in your energy, your behavior, and what you train a man to expect from you. And if you miss even one of these, you can accidentally talk a good man out of respecting you, And talk a mediocre man into using you. Number 11, stop trying to earn his love. The moment you stop chasing it is the moment he starts to fall. If you want a man to fall in love with you, stop trying to earn it. Stop trying to prove it because doing is masculine energy. Being is feminine energy. Be the woman who receives with grace. Be the woman who respects his masculine nature. Be the woman who believes in his mission. Be the woman who radiates joy from her soul, from an authentic place. That's the combination. That's what makes a man look at you and think, yep, she's the one.
