Mark Roberge breaks down the math: a Spotify stream pays 0.4 cents, so artists need 5,000 streams to make $20. One dedicated fan spending $20 monthly is worth 60,000 streams. Twelve superfans generate $240 monthly plus direct contact, merch sales, and concert attendance.

A Spotify stream pays you around 4/10 of a cent. A real superfan might spend $20 a month with you. Those are 2 completely different businesses. So think about it. To make $20 from Spotify, you need roughly 5,000 streams, and then next month you need another 5,000. But one fan willing to spend $20 a month with your band just shows up again next month. Get 12 of those people, and now you're doing $240 a month. That's roughly the same money as 60,000 Spotify streams, except you actually know who those 12 people are. You have their name, their email, their phone number, and they buy merch. They come to shows, they bring their friends, and if you actually take care of them, they stick around. And I'm not saying streams don't matter, of course they do. I'm saying stop treating streams like they're the end goal. The stream should be the beginning of the relationship, not the entire relationship. Build fans, not just numbers.
