Why I Switched to THIS Instead of Timeblocking

Mark Hamilton ditched timeblocking for a "mini day" system that groups similar tasks into discrete movements, like phone calls or accounting, modeled on assembly lines. He claims it boosted his productivity eightfold and helped him sell over $350 million in books.

Time blocking is a waste of time. Hi, I'm Mark Hamilton. I've sold over $350 million my books and I've helped over 2 million people build extraordinary lives and successful businesses. I used to time block when I started my business and here's what happened. Papers would pile up on my desk, pile up. And in a day I'd get down, maybe down to here, but then it pile up the next day and maybe I get down to here and the pile up the next day. Four. You know it. You couldn't even see my face. So that's when I realized I was in trouble. I was a young businessman and I happened to also be a reader. I read every business book I could get my hands on. I was reading a book, actually this may have been an audible book I was listening to on Henry Ford and how he used to build cars. Ford Motor Company used to build cars one at a time and sit in the center of the factory and the workers would come over and one by one place the pieces in and secure the pieces. Then he started the moving assembly line. Started off with some horses pulling the car along. And he reduced each person's job to simply a physical movement. Whether that was putting on the wheel or putting a steering wheel or the seats. It's just one physical movement per man. The moment he started that moving assembly line, he 8 folded a car, went from 12 hours to 90 minutes to build one car. So I took that concept of physical movements and I applied it to my daily schedule. I broke my day down into physical movements such as phone calls, such as letter writing. That was before the computer, so we didn't have emails. Nowadays it would be emails. I broke it down into meetings. Each of these are physical movement in itself. Phone call is a physical movement. Writing a letter was a physical movement. Holding meetings is a physical movement. Doing my accounting was in itself a physical movement and thinking pattern. So I broke my day down into these physical movements simulating the assembly line. And guess what? I had formed an assembly line of producing my success immediately. Just like Ford Motor company, my productivity went up Eightfold almost overnight. It was unbelievable. I was done with my work by Monday afternoon, Tuesday afternoon at the very latest. So I named this my mini Day schedule. I made each one of my physical movements its own day. Start on time and end on time. So I get those deadline pressures and more energy into my day. I called that the mini day system. I blew away my competition. I was able to build a company that, as I said, I've sold over $350 million of my books as a one man show. So that's the power in breaking your day down by physical movements, not time blocks, not projects, not time by project. Time by project would be like the original way of making a car. It's a process that's eight times less efficient than breaking it down by physical movements. When you're attaching tasks to time, your whole day is disruptive. Let's say you, you want to do this particular project, so you come and go, I'm going to allow two hours to do this project. Well, it's so inefficient. You know, you're picking up a call here, you're writing something here, you're doing an email here, you get 1/8 the amount done as if you break your entire day, every project down into these physical movements. So now if you want to know more, I want you to go to neothink.com and I'll send you my free newsletters regarding business techniques and how I as a one man show have sold over $350 million of my own books.
