Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky announced an AI agent launching in 2027 that will search listings by querying backend data instead of the visual interface. Hosts need to update their property metadata because the agent will prioritize amenities and keywords over photos and maps. Newer AI agents like Meta's Muse can now interact directly with booking platforms without timing out or getting blocked.
The Airbnb search as you know it is going to change in 2027. So Brian Chesky was speaking at the Skift Global Forum last week and he had this to say.
Here we will launch our agent.
Now what does an agent mean in the world of Airbnb? If you've been messing around with Claude, ChatGPT, Grokbot, Google Gemini, etc., you will know what agents are by now. You can go on to any of these channels, any of these companies, you can set a task and it will go and do it for you. Now these agents have been great, but they time out and they make mistakes very easily, especially when they have to use website interfaces. So when they have to go and look on Google Chrome, for example, or Safari, they A, cost a lot of money, but B, are more prone to mistakes, and C, Airbnb have started to block their access. Now this has all recently changed as of the last few weeks with Muse by Meta and also Instinct AI. What is fascinating about these 2 is that they are able to get access without using website browsers, without having to do much, but they can get access. And most importantly, they are helping to use the Airbnb platform, use Booking.com, use Expedia more than ever before. The announcement that Airbnb— now when they do bring in agents, it is going to change the interface as we know it forever. So right now, this is me on the Airbnb landing page. As you can see, you can search for places to stay, you can search for services, experiences, hotels, all the things that they are currently pushing at the moment. What is going to happen when an agent gets involved? This is not going to appear. Imagine going on to Airbnb and it looking something like this. So what does this mean for you on Airbnb? Number 1, you have got to make sure that your behind the scenes, your extranet, is updated on your properties with all the amenities, all the keywords, all of the things that Airbnb is wanting you to do. Because if somebody comes in and just types in what they're after, It doesn't care about a map. It doesn't care about keyword stuffing on these titles. It doesn't care about your fancy picture at the front here. It is looking, and the agent will be viewing what is behind the scenes. Because whether we like it or not, Airbnb are adapting their search so it is more ready for the world of what we as consumers want— Meta by Muse, Instinct, and has for the first time brought it more to consumer AI. Everything up until this point has been for business AI, as in business owners using AI to help them with their business. Consumer AI is what Meta are doing, what Instinct are doing, and very soon it's what Airbnb are going to be doing as well.
