Can I do "national" (no city) searches on AlsoAsked?

Google always knows your location, so truly national searches don't exist. Queries like "food trucks" get local results, while "best laptops" stays the same everywhere. AlsoAsked defaults to the largest city in your region, and there's no way to remove location data entirely.

Mark from AlsoAsked here, and I want to clear up a misconception about national searches in Google. Not so long ago in AlsoAsked, we added the ability to specify a city when you are doing a search. Since adding this option, I've had several support requests from people asking, hey, I don't want to specify a city, how can I do a national search? Well, interestingly, whenever you do a search on Google, your longitude and latitude is passed. So there is no such thing as a national search. It comes down to the query you use and whether Google determines there is localized intent. In this example, I've done a search for food trucks and I've said I'm in New York. Now food trucks is a search query Google knows has local intent. Therefore, the fact we are in a specific place is important. So it's actually started pulling back things here like, is there food on Governors Island, which is obviously in New York. So this is how Google determines whether these questions are localized or not. It's based on the query. If we do other searches, so I've got one here, say for best laptops, this doesn't really have any local intent. So the results are going to be pretty much the same no matter where you search from. What was actually happening with Also Ask previously was before we had the city option, we were still sending a city location. We were just putting the default as the largest city in the region, which we still do by the default. This means if you're not interested in specifying a city, just leave it on the default setting. It will be the largest city and that's what you need to do. But there isn't actually a way to pass no location information to Google when you do a search.
