building a $1M business using RESIDENTIAL MOWERS!

Mike Andes walks through a 7,000 sq ft mowing job and explains why his company uses cheap 21" residential Honda mowers instead of commercial ones: short supply and lighter weight means less turf damage. He runs a pay-for-performance model where workers earn a percentage of labor revenue, and focuses on properties under 10,000 sq ft.

Hey everyone, it's Mike Andes and today we are going to be mowing this lawn. It's 7,000 square feet. I'm going to give you all the information besides one thing and that is the price. Because today whoever guessed the price the closest and whoever guesses it to the dollar first in the comments below is going to get $399 of value from long term media dot com.
Now this is going to get you all of your door hangers, flyers, postcards, yard signs, all the Designs. It's usually 399 bucks. You will win that if you simply guess to the dollar what the price of this job is. The first person wins the prize. So let's get this job started. I'm going to walk through it, do a bit of a voiceover. My producers dragging me out. It's like 1 or 2am I'm doing this video for you guys. Hopefully you can learn something how you can make money in your lawn care business. Now the first thing you might notice is are you a big business and you're using residential Honda mowers? Yeah, we are. I'm going to tell you why for two reasons. Number one, the shortage of everything that's been going on and with the supply chains has caused commercial mowers like the ones we us usually use to be way behind. Literally 12 months we could not get a single commercial Honda mower in our state. So what do we do? Well, we're going to improvise. We're going to use these 400, 500 residential lawnmowers. They're 21 inches wide now. They're a lot lighter and we actually really tended to like these. And we're going to really see if this is a viable model and that is to use these mowers for just one year, maybe a year and a half, but no more. Now we do have 30 inch mowers like this Exmark 30 inch commercial. But these things are heavy, like very heavy. And in our market there's lots of moisture, which means ruts and which means getting things stuck and messing up the lawn with these large 30 inch, very, very heavy lawnmowers compared to these very light 21 inch plastic residential mowers that don't make skid marks, they don't get bogged down. So definitely something to be thinking about. And these residential ones are way cheaper, literally a third or less of the cost, like a quarter of the cost. Because let's say, for example, I spend, I say $400 on a residential mower, but I'M going to have to spend fifteen hundred dollars on a commercial mower. Well, if I get one year's worth of life out of that residential mower and then literally just throw it away or give it to the Goodwill, I could literally still make more money using that. If as long as I last it for one year. If the commercial lawnmower lasts, let's say, three or four years, they kind of break even. So we kind of like this. And the fact is, after three, four years of use a commercial mower, a lot of stuff start. Little stuff starts breaking. The handles, the knobs, the gears, things like that start going out anyways. So why not just use a residential lawnmower, throw the ringer for one year, and then get rid of it? So we're mowing this property. I hope you're watching. As entertaining as my voiceover is, I hope you're watching, because whoever can guess the closest to the dollar first, whoever gets it, nails it on the penny, is going to get $399@lawn caremedia.com now, you notice on this job that we actually have two people working. Most efficient is actually just one person working. But when you're on P4P, P4P is pay for performance. And we give our employees a percentage of the labor revenue that they earn on this job instead of an hourly wage. So let's just. Let's pretend it was $500 for this job. We're gonna give them a percentage of that revenue regardless of how long it takes them. So if they get done more efficiently, they don't have to come back for a callback. They'll make more money. But when you have two people on the job, it kind of splits the labor revenue in half. And so typically, they make less if there's two people on a route. So versus if they go solo by themselves, which is not super fun, it's a little bit less. Morale is a little bit lower when you have people just by themselves all day long. But when they're making 3, 4, 5 dollars more per hour because of P4P, they tend to like it. And that's why we have these really small, cheap setups in terms of mowing setups, because we can't. You can't have all your guys going solo for mowing if you have a $40,000 truck and a $20,000 trailer with five zero turns. That's why we focus on these smaller setups. It's not necessarily to say that right thing to do, but this is actually one of the larger properties that we do in terms of averages 7,000 square feet, honestly, kind of on the higher end. We really try to focus on things that are under 10,000, 11,000, 12,000 square feet that start to get pretty big. And that's why we can make these smaller mowers work. If you have larger properties, you're going to need zero turns. You're not going to be able to do properties at 30, 40, 50,000 square feet efficiently or competitively. If you're trying to do a lawn care and a mowing business. You can see here we use these racks on the truck. We use a ramp rack on the back to try to make it ultra efficient so we get into tight areas. There's not a lot of drive time and unload time with trailers and backing things up. It allows us to take lower skilled employees and make them really efficient, really fast. And that is the goal of P4P. You can check out P4P software.com but this is, in conclusion, all the notes you need to know on this job. And I want you to ask yourself, what would it cost to mow Grant blow and go on this property? We didn't do anything fancy. We bag clippings. The clippings had to get in the back of that bed of that truck and we take those and we haul them away to dump. But if you can guess what the dollar price is of this mow in the comments below and you're the first one to do so, you will get that $399 print package from lawn caremedia.com check it out and watch this video here if you're looking to start your lawn care business. And some of my top tips for you doing so.
