Mike Andes demonstrates how to give quick, on-the-spot lawn-care estimates while distributing door hangers in a neighborhood. He outlines several service-specific door-hanger templates (lawn mowing; mulch cleanup/installation; property cleanup), advises staying on the sidewalk to avoid trespassing, and shows writing an immediate estimate (example total: $379) based on visible needs (e.g., bush trimming).

Today we're actually in a neighborhood and we're going to be passing out door hangers in the wild and actually do an estimate for a customer that might need service. Have a few different types of these services. So, for example, we got a lawn mowing one, mulch cleanup or mulch installation one, and we got a property cleanup one. Based upon the property you're walking up to, you can determine which one do you want to highlight. For example, right now the grass is basically dead, but look at these bushes. They're really overgrown. Well, the time in between doors, I could literally be writing up an estimate for them. There is no question for the client about what price you're going to charge. You don't have to come back the property to give an estimate. Right here, I'm going to say, okay, bush trimming. They definitely need bush trimming. No leaf cleanup really to speak of. I don't want to go trouncing into their backyard and try to look at, see if there's other bushes or other flower beds. You're going to get called for trespassing. I'm going to stay on the sidewalk. I look around, everything looks good. I'm going to put in here, haul the breed of dump, and I'm going to go ahead and put a total in here. Whatever your price is. I'm just going to go and put $379 up here in the total.
