Mike Andes (creator) advises against pricing lawns using production rates tied to a larger mower than the crew actually uses. He argues businesses should standardize on a single mower/setup for pricing (square-foot pricing based on production rate) so prices remain accurate even if equipment changes or smaller crews must cover a job.

Do you think that is a bad idea to price lawns using a production rate for a larger mower than what you currently use? If you know what you'd like to be using to fit your business model? My big thing when it comes to production rates and when it comes to finding a price for square footage, and this is something that at Command center we are digging deep into right now, that is, hey, we have certain production rates based upon the type of mower you have. And then we can figure this out on the phone and give a price over the phone to the customers for mowing. The problem with that is you want to make sure you have the same mower setup across the board when it comes to your pricing. You don't want to be using different production rates based on what type of mower you're going to use in the property. The reason you don't is because if something happens to that one mower that you have, that's 52 inches, and all of a sudden the crew with the 21 inch mower has to be mowing that property now, their production rates are way off skill. So in my opinion, you want to use one type of mower in your production rate and your setup. That way it's standard. That way it's always the same and it's not dependent on you having bigger equipment.
