Short transcript excerpt from a YouTube video (Mike Andes) discussing why top job candidates leave during lengthy hiring processes. Speakers note that multi-step procedures (seven–eight steps), delays waiting for references, and multiple interview stages cause A-player candidates to accept other offers or drop out.

If it takes you a week to get a candidate in the door and give them a job there's a good chance that if they're an A player they could have five other jobs in that time period.
We do our best to get back to them. It's just there is it's a seven eight step process and you're waiting on references too. Indeed you already have their resume. Typically some of them will have references on there but I usually don't like to call them anyways. A couple questions and in the video that will weed out 90% of people instead of doing three back and forth just do it all because they're really good person they apply, they really want to work here. They get a message immediately back asking they'll do that but they're not going to wait for references. And then in person and then a video and then a form they're just like all right I'm out.
