A short conversation between Fred and Mike Andes about business strategy in the home-services/landscaping industry. Fred explains he let go of a $100,000 contract and is considering shifting toward an employee-retention, instruction-style business model—even though he dislikes that line of work—because he believes it provides career paths and stable pay for staff and is necessary for growth.
Other models in the green industry where they are able to retain staff instruction type environments. Like I let go of $100,000 contract that we had. I'm trying to head in that direction.
Now when you head in that direction, is it because you like the work more or is it because in order to grow you feel like that's the way you need to move?
I actually hate that work. I think it's an opportunity for people to have a career, support their families where I could pay them 40 bucks an hour, give them a company truck, all that stuff, stuff that I value and I'm like, I think that's what I have to do.
Fred has a case of what I call the shiny service syndrome. And this disease is where we as home service business owners think that some other service or some other industry inside of home services is going to be the unlock for massive profits and just be so much easier than our current industry. When reality, all of them are hard, it's just a different type of hard.
