The Simple Framework That Tells You Exactly What Business to Start

Mike Andes, founder of Augusta Lawn Care, walks through a three-circle Venn diagram: start a business where you're good at something, passionate about it, and can make money from it. He shows why hitting only two of three leads to burnout or failure, then works through a golf example with products, content, and sponsorship deals.

Hey everyone, my name is Mike Andes. I'm the founder of Augusta Lawn Care. We have over 150 locations around the world. And today we're talking about if you want to start a business and you don't know which one to start, this might help you. Now, I actually have a download for you. You look in the links in the description and you can actually download what I'm working on today, this exact worksheet. And what it's going to help you do is kind of categorize what sort of business you might want to start. Now keep in mind that when you first get started, sometimes you're going to do things you don't enjoy. But in the perfect world, you would cap all three of these checkboxes. You would check off all these checkboxes and that is, are you good at something?
Can you make money doing it? Are you passionate about it? Do you enjoy doing it? Alright, so you got to be good at it, you got to enjoy doing it and you got to make money. Now, just because you're passionate about something does not mean you start a business. And a lot of times as soon as you take something you really enjoy and you turn it into a business, you guess what, it becomes work. And you actually stop enjoying it because you've now made it a job. So what we want to think about is down here below is what are the things you're good at? You're like, well, I'm good at golf. Okay. I'm good at singing. Okay, this is not me, by the way. I'm good at golf, not good at singing. All right, you're like, well, I also am really, really good at Call of Duty, definitely. Okay, fantastic. Now what makes good money? Alright, inside of. Let's just take golf for example. Inside of golf, what makes good money? Well, I can sell clubs. If I'm gonna sell golf clubs, I could sell golf balls. Okay. I could have like some sort of a news network around golf, like a blog or maybe create a YouTube channel where I go to different golfing events or I make certain how to tips and tricks for golfers. Okay, very cool. Now what am I passionate about? Okay, well, I'm passionate about baseball, I'm passionate about cars, and I really enjoy playing golf. Okay, well, we might have something here because we're good at golf, we are passionate about golf. Then the question becomes how can you actually make money with both of those things? Because if you're good at it, good chance you're going to be able to make money. But some industries guess what? You can't make money even if you enjoy it and you're good at it. What would that mean? It, it would mean that you are over here, which means you are good at it and you are passionate at it. But if it's not in the intersection of all three importantly need to make money over it, you're gonna have a problem again. When you're first getting started, a lot of times you're gonna fall in this category, which means you just gotta make money at something you're good at, whether or not you like it or not. Whether or not you're passionate does not matter. Now if you say, well, what happens if I fall over here where I can make something and make money and I'm passionate about it? What happens if I am not good at it? Guess what? You're gonna go out of business because customers aren't gonna show up anymore. Alright? So these are always areas where you can be in kind of between two of these. But if you can hit the center where you're good at it, you can make money doing it and you're passionate. We're in business. So in this case, I would say, hey, I'm good at golf, I'm passionate about golf. And you know what, in fact, I'm actually really passionate about cameras and video as well, which means it could probably be a really good case for me to be able to start a blog or YouTube channel because it combines what I'm passionate about. I'm good at it, and I can actually make money making a blog or making a YouTube channel and then be able to sell sponsorships or ads to be able to go after other people that play golf.
