Treating everyone the same doesn't create equality because people start from different places. To give everyone equal opportunity, you sometimes need to give more support to those who are behind. Ignoring these differences actually perpetuates unfairness.
Here's the thing with identity and age bias. People get the word fair and equal different, misunderstood. It is our job to create equal opportunity for everybody. That doesn't mean everybody's treated the same. Equal opportunity does not mean the same. Some people came with different opportunities before they walked in the door than others. So if you treat them the same, they're not actually in the same place. Right, so you might have to empower one to catch up to the other. You're not treating them the same, you're helping them get equal opportunities. So that's why that's super important that we understand that when we're having that conversation.
