Respect isn't something you earn. It's a baseline right everyone gets, like how courts treat even criminals with dignity. Confusing respect with admiration or trust is what breaks relationships.

Respect is blank. What do we typically hear when we're growing up? Respect is blank not given. What's the word? Earned. Healthy or unhealthy? Incredibly unhealthy. Why is it unhealthy? It implies I have to do something to be respected by others. This is a game of power and hierarchy. Incredibly unhealthy. Almost every kid yelled earned today. So that's what they believed coming in the room. And I did say to them, is it messed up? Yes, they got it messed up once we said it. It is messed up. I'm going to give you respect because you're a person. Now, admiration, different ballgame. And that's where people usually mess up. Well, they broke my trust. I'm not going to respect them. No, you don't trust them anymore. You still treat them with respect, right? Uh, criminals get treated with respect. It's called the judicial system, right? So we give everybody a basic sense of dignity, respect.
