The Joy of Being Unperceived

This is a short YouTube podcast episode by Misty Tripoli (Keepin It Real, creator of the Groove Method) in which she recounts a personal anecdote from partner dancing to illustrate experiencing social invisibility with age. She names this shift "the age of irrelevance" or "female invisibility," then reframes it as liberating — an opportunity to stop people-pleasing and live unapologetically. The episode closes with encouragement to subscribe, share, and continue the journey of self-trust and authenticity.

For many years, I never sat down. I would go out dancing and I'd have a line of dudes just waiting to spin me around the dance floor. And about six years ago, I took notice that when I went at snow to go dancing, I sat a lot where before I never sat. I danced every song and I looked around. The people that used to ask me to dance noticed them. And you know the chicks with the short skirts and booties hanging out and you know, the young hot chicas and it hit me like a ton of bricks. Like, wow, is this my time? Hey badass. Welcome to Keepin It Real, the podcast where we ditch the nonsense, say it like it is, and redefine what it means to feel good in your body and your life. I'm Misty Tripoli, creator of the Groove Method, and I'm here to help you move, dance and live authentically and unapologetically. So if you're ready to break free from the societal expect, embrace your truth and find your own unique groove, you are in the right place. So let's keep it real, let's keep it wild, and let's keep it moving. Have you ever walked into a room and felt unseen? It's a strange, almost jarring realization that the moment when we get older and the world stops noticing the way that you used to be. Some call it the age of irrelevance. But what if this so called invisibility isn't something to fear, but something to embrace? In today's episode, we're diving deep into this unexpected shift. What it feels like, why it happens, and how it just might be the most liberating thing you never saw coming. So let's get into it. You want to know what one of the shitty yet totally awesome things about getting older is? Is when you enter the age of irrelevance. Meaning you know, when you're younger and you, you know the radar's on and yet they're looking and wanting to be looked at and there'll be a point in time and if you're like me, if you're over 50, you know exactly what I'm talking about. When you start to notice that you're not being noticed and it's a feeling of complete irrelevancy. So it happened for me because I'm a partner dancer, I salsa dance a lot and for many years I never sat down. I would go out dancing and I'd have a line of dudes just waiting to spin me around the dance floor. And about six years ago I took notice that when I Went at snow to go dancing. I sat a lot where before I never sat. I danced every song and I looked around the people that used to ask me to dance and noticed them and you know, the chicks with the short skirts and booties hanging out and you know, the young hot chicas. And it hit me like a ton of bricks. Like, wow, is this my time? Like, it's official. Because when I look in the mirror, I mean, I know like I'm 50 and stuff, but like, I'm thinking, oh, my wrinkles aren't so bad. I'm still pretty, I still look good. Ain't nothing wrong with all this, but how confronting it is when you step out into the socialized, conditioned society about what age is and, you know, what's hot and what matters and how disgusting it is. You know, this ageism that once you get older, you really are irrelevant. Like, you lose your value in this so called society. But little did they know that actually the invisibility and the irrelevance in that society in that dimension is absolute freedom. And there's so much power in it. Not giving a shit, not people pleasing, not caring, not even being noticed. Like, I used to not step out of my house without looking kind of cute, and now it's like, they ain't looking anyways. What am I doing it for? Who really cares? Like, you know, setting yourself free. But it took a moment to transition the way that I thought about it. But now, boy, it's nice. It's kind of nice not trying to be seen or don't even have to try anymore because you ain't being seen or having importance, you know, trying to get the attention. It's absolute freedom. So if you're sensing or you've experienced the official term of age of irrelevance or female invisibility, they call it, it's freedom. It's total freedom. Cause who cares? Who cares? It's freedom. So enjoy being invisible. It's kind of dope. All right, fierce ones, that's a wrap for today. Thanks for keeping it real and grooving with me.
