How to find YOUR TRIBE! (top 2 ways to elevate your influences)

Speaker A shares how the people you spend time with shape your success, citing Jim Rohn's "average of the five people" idea. He moved from a party-focused circle to one supporting entrepreneurship by joining CrossFit, Toastmasters, and Okanagan CoLab coworking space, then attending targeted events like Fuck Up Nights at the Kelowna Innovation Center to meet founders.

You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. That is a quote from Jim Rohn, a guy that was huge into personal development, and I truly believe that. So if you are hanging around with people who are drinking lots on the weekend, um, can't save any money, they're always spending their money, um, you know, who are into just that aren't pushing you in the direction that you want to go, then you need to figure out how to change your sphere of influence and how to start hanging around with people who are going to give you a better influence and who are going to push you in a more positive direction. Now, this is something that I've struggled with a ton in my own life. Like, I am the queen of this struggle, and I'm only now starting to take action on this stuff and and, you know, change my approach to things so that I'm hanging around with more people who are pushing me in a direction that I want to go, right? I know there were some points in my past where my friends, all they wanted to do was drink and get drunk and party and spend all their money, and that was not a great influence on me, right? There were times in my life where the people I was hanging around with were doing cocaine, right? Not a great influence, not exactly what I was aspiring to be. Right? And now I find myself, you know, growing or pushing toward entrepreneurship. And, you know, that's the direction I want to go. And I'm finding, or at least I was finding, and to some degree I still am, that I didn't really have any friends or know any people who were into entrepreneurship. I have a couple, but not that many. And so that was a struggle for me is, okay, how do I start hanging around with those people? And really what I want to share with you in this video is the top 2 tactics that I've used and am still currently using to change my sphere of influence so that I can be pushed more in the direction that I want to go in terms of entrepreneurship and business and growing wealth, and less in the direction of drinking all the time, unhealthy habits, and not saving any money. So really one of the keys to these, these 2 tips is that, you know, I think there's a quote out there, but if you do what you've always done, then you're going to get what you've always got. So it's really along those lines. If you don't like what you're getting right now, then you obviously need to do something to change it. And so tip number 1 for you is to join some groups, right? Um, you know, last October for me, I kind of had a revelation and I was like, you know what, I'm not happy. I'm not happy with the relationships that I actually have in my life. I'm not happy with the influences I have in my life. And who's to blame for that? Me. I was to blame, right? So I said, "Okay, well, what am I going to do? How am I going to change in order to fix this?" And my thing was I joined 3 groups. I joined 3 groups that I thought were going to be a good influence on me and I thought were going to positively, you know, push me in a direction that I wanted to go. So one of those groups you know, I have a huge value around health and wellness, and one of those groups was joining CrossFit again. So I did that, and I, you know, became part of this community who also cared about their health and their well-being. Number 2, you know, I'm doing a lot of these videos and filming, and I want to get better at storytelling and public speaking. So number 2, the group that I joined was Toastmasters, right? You're also going to find a lot of people who are trying to achieve stuff. They are into personal development. They want to be better. They want to learn. They want to grow. And so I joined Toastmasters. And then my final example, and really the thing that has truly stuck the most for me, is I joined a coworking space. Which, shameless plug, if you are living in Kelowna, BC, you definitely need to check out the Okanagan CoLab. If you're an entrepreneur, freelancer, all that stuff, it's amazing if you want to upgrade your sphere of influence. Totally done with the shameless plug. They're not even paying me for this, that's the funny thing. I just love it that much that I put it in here. But that's the third thing that I did. I joined that collab. And what that gave me was not only a professional workspace, I mean, that was honestly the gravy on the meal for me, or the icing on the cake if you will, but the main thing that that gave me is, you know, a sphere of influence of other people who are doing Facebook ads. They are running businesses. They are social media managers, or they have an agency, or whatever, they're doing e-commerce, whatever they're doing, right? Freelancers, they're writing, they're copywriting, they're building websites. Now I'm constantly doing my work in a space where everyone else is doing this kind of stuff, and you know, that has an impact on me, right? They're not going out and blowing all their money, they're not drinking like crazy on the weekends and just living for the party, No, that's not what I want. If that's what you want, great, go find those friends. But if that's not what you want, then, you know, you got to do something to change it. So yeah, joining that coworking space was definitely one of the best things that I've done. So that is tip number 1, is to join some groups where these kinds of people are going to be hanging out.
So I lied, totally not done with the shameless plug. I'm just gonna give you a quick tour around CoLab. This is our little calendar on the wall here. Joining events, that's one thing that's really gonna help you out. These guys have a lot of cool events they put on. So like I was saying, some people are doing Facebook ads. This office that you can see behind me, I'm pretty sure the guys in there are doing Facebook ads, so that's pretty cool. There are a ton of teams in here, businesses, corner offices again like this one as well, where they are, you know, selling mattresses, doing that kind of stuff. And then also they have some hot desks in here for freelancers, people that are building websites, businesses, doing sales, marketing, that kind of stuff. So this is a terrible time to show you because everyone is pretty much gone home because it's 5 o'clock today. But basically this is what you can expect. So some hot desks, and as you can see, some people working away there, working on their business.
Now, tip number 2 for you is is to network, right? Go to some events. If you have to, get somebody else who's looking, you know, who's in the similar shoes to you. Find like an accountability buddy, if you will, and find somebody else who is also trying to network and meet some people, and you can go to these events together. But even if you can't do that, just go by yourself. You know, go on Facebook and look up what are all the events happening. You know, click networking and see if there's any networking events. Browse through everything. Where are the people that you are trying to, you know, hang out with? What are they already doing? Where are they already hanging out, right? So for me, I'll give you an example. Tonight I'm going to something called Fuck Up Nights, and it's basically, it's at the Innovation Center here in Kelowna, and it's basically entrepreneurs telling stories about how they've fucked up in their business. And, you know, guess who's going to be hanging out there? Well, entrepreneurs are going to be telling stories there, and entrepreneurs who want to learn about the other entrepreneurs' fuck-ups, you know, aspiring entrepreneurs or people who are already in business, they're also going to be there, right? So that's an example of an event that you could go to to meet those kinds of people. And this is something that you can find on Facebook, you can find it on Eventbrite, you can find it on pages on Facebook like, let's say, The CoLab. Who's really trying to push entrepreneurial events, and that just gives you another time to hang out with these people and create some relationships with these people so that you can all be stronger together, really, and succeed. So that's it. Those are my 2 tips. If you are somebody who is, you know, not quite happy with the influences that you currently have, then you've got to do something different, and find out where those people are hanging out. And it's no different, like, you know, finding spaces where they hang out or finding events that they are going to. If you want to be an entrepreneur, if you want to be involved in health, if you want to get into real estate, right? You know, if you want to be— if you want to find people who are into health and wellness, then maybe the event you're looking for is not Fuck Up Nights, or it's not some sort of, you know, how do you pitch to businesses, venture capitalists, whatever. Maybe it's, you know, going to Saturday yoga. Maybe it's going to those nutrition workshops that some of the grocery stores hold. Whatever it is, my point is that you need to figure out where are these people hanging out and how do you go do the same thing? How do you start being around those people and start creating those friendships and start creating those relationships really so that you can all succeed together? So try this out. I hope it works for you. And as always, if you haven't, subscribe to my channel.
