So we tend to blame the pings, the dings, the rings. We tend to blame this stuff outside of us. We blame the television, we blame our boss, we blame our kids. We blame all these things as the distractions. And they can be a source of distraction. We call these things external triggers. But studies find that that's only 10% of the cause of our distractions. 10%. So what's the other 90%? 90% of the time that we get distracted, it's not because of what's happening outside of us. It's about what's happening inside of us, specifically inside our own heads. That 90% of our distractions are not external triggers. They're what's called internal triggers. What are internal triggers? Internal triggers are uncomfortable emotional states that we seek to escape. Boredom, loneliness, fatigue, uncertainty, anxiety, stress.
