Nir Eyal explains a method that resolves 80-90% of couples' arguments: identify which issues actually matter to each person and let the one who cares more decide. Most arguments disappear when you realize neither person really cares, or one person cares way more than the other.

So many of our interpersonal conflicts come about when people are disagreeing about issues that don't freaking matter. And so what this technique does is isolate the issues that do matter. You discard those 80 to 90% of issues that are way more important to one person than the other. And so why argue about it? So I don't really care about the color of the couch. So when my wife used to ask, well, what do you think about this? And I said, I don't really like it. That was honest. I wasn't lying when I said, I don't like that color. What? I wasn't giving her the information that wasn't present. How much do I actually care? Right. I cannot like the color and still be fine with it. 80, 90% of the time that we've used this technique, it solves the conflict right away because you immediately discover that either both people think the issue is not that important, or one person thinks it's important, one person thinks it's not, and you just go with the person's opinion who thinks it's very important.
