He argues that putting effort into or customizing a product increases ownership feelings and makes users more likely to continue using the product.

When you get the AirPods, they let you engrave them with your initials or some kind of emoji. Why do they do that? They do that because that is a form of investment. It's called the IKEA effect. The IKEA effect says that when you put effort into customizing something to making something. Just like, why do we keep crappy IKEA furniture from our dorm room to our house to our second house? Because we built it, we made it. And so that effect of customizing a product is a form of psychological investment that goes into that investment phase of the hook and makes us more likely to use the product in the future.
