Nitu Mohanka explains how stress triggers fight, flight, or freeze responses by diverting oxygen from your brain and gut to your limbs. Ten deep breaths counted to ten re-oxygenates those areas, lowers cortisol, and resets anger, avoidance, or numbness fast.

Whenever you feel stressed, either of these three things happen: fight, flight, freeze. Fight is when you have anger, irritation, when you want to fight back on something. Flight is when you ignore, you want to run away from the situation, you just want to not deal with it. And freeze is when you feel numb, stuck, and you procrastinate a lot. Whenever these things are happening to you, you know, just know that there is a stress response. that has got activated in your body. And when that does, all the oxygen supply from your prefrontal cortex, your heart, and your gut gets cut off, and it's spread into your hands and legs to deal with that situation. The thing is that our mind is made to, uh, you know, fight with, uh, these kind of, uh, environment. When we were, you know, in our ancient ages, we had to fight with animals, but now we don't have to fight with animals. The fight now is with the notification on our app or boss said something, but the brain responds the same way as it used to when we were living in jungles. So how do we become aware of this? That, okay, this is how I'm feeling. And immediately you need to send oxygen back to your prefrontal cortex, your heart, and your lungs. And for that, you can take 10 deep breaths in that moment. The moment you do that, the prefrontal cortex opens up. Heart receives oxygen again, and your gut is again oxygenated. And when this happens, your stress response, the cortisol level in your blood, will immediately go down. Try this every time when you are feeling numb, when you are feeling that you know you are not being productive, or you want to run away from some situation, and you have anger. This is the best hack: breathing till counting of ten, and that will immediately lower down your stress response. I hope this helps.
