EP 2: The Team

Omar and Nicole built their production team by hiring for attitude over skills, which can be taught. Key members include Subin for his trustworthiness, Molly who came from commercial radio, and Josh, an award-winning filmmaker and Knicks fan whose resilience defines the team's approach.

I think Nicole and I really believe in hiring people with a good attitude. You can train skills, you can teach pretty much anything, right? But you can't teach somebody to have a great attitude, to have somebody that wants to work hard, that wants to go after it, that wants to learn, that wants to grow.
A team that is creative, is collaborative, is willing to be honest and open about the whole production process, to be contributing and bringing their different skills and their different sets of talents and abilities, sharing ideas, interacting with each other, and having fun in the process. Omar brings the wisdom. He's not just the voice and the host of the podcast. He brings years of experience in business, running companies. But the thing that I love the most is that he's light and he's funny. I'm often too serious. for my own good, and so I love the fact that we can balance each other out.
Nicole is everything I'm not. She's the one that makes sure the trains run on time. She makes sure that everything is done to the standard that we expect. In fact, she has a great talk she does on stage called The Dollars Are in the Details. Anything that looks good when you see how the studio comes out, that all, all that credit goes to Nicole. The offsite team is the team. I feel like they're just integrated into our local team.
We've had people on the team for over 10 years. They bring consistency, they bring loyalty, they bring understanding. It's priceless. I'm super grateful to have a team that's been with us for such a long time.
And it's important to just find great talent wherever they are in the world. Subin, when we first met in the first interview, was well prepared. She was professional. But I think why we wanted to hire her is I felt like she's somebody that we can trust. You can't really Train trust.
There is one thing that's really surprised me about Subin. It's kind of eerie, but in a good way. She often says what's in my mind. I do think someone who's in this role needs to be a couple of steps ahead of you, and I've actually experienced this in just a couple of weeks. Molly has an impressive background in commercial radio, and recently she had applied that skill to podcasting, and so we were really keen to talk to her.
She has a can-do attitude. She's somebody that just takes initiative and gets it done.
She's been really quick to pick up the camera, go outside, shoot some short-form content. That's been really fun. Josh, an award-winning background in film, creative photography, working with, you know, amazing brands.
All that stuff is amazing, but all you need to know about Josh is that he is a diehard Knicks fan. And in order to be a diehard Knicks fan, you need to have resilience. You need to have a heart of gold because it's not easy being a Knicks fan. If you're able to withstand the ups and downs of the franchise of the New York Knicks, you're aye by me.
What I love is that the team has gelled so well, and so every day is super fun, and we're just getting started. So watch this space.
