Short excerpt from an interview discussing whether to follow passion versus skill in entrepreneurship, emphasizing preparation, commitment over initial excitement, and early-stage risk mitigation advice for beginners. The speakers reference Seneca’s idea of preparation meeting opportunity and critique the "follow your passion" advice common on social media.
If your goal is, how do I make money? But then also, how can I get passionate? What I would say is, follow what you're good at first.
Seneca said that luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. Right. So the first thing I'd say is, go prepare.
I often feel like this idea that gets pushed around on the Internet, especially on social media, about following your passion is really overrated. Like, this idea of the money will come if you just follow your passion.
Fashion. In my mind, it's a lot like lust in a relationship. Like, it's really fun and exciting that first year, but still, eventually the love chemicals wear off, and then you're kind of stuck with each other, and you got to figure out how to work, make it work. And I think love really is about commitment.
What advice would you give somebody who's just starting out, who's just, like, doesn't know what they don't know and just wants to go for it?
Oh, gosh. There's so many, like, ways to mitigate.
