Excerpt from a YouTube interview (Omar Zenhom channel) in which an interviewer and guest discuss career-starting advice and entrepreneurship. Key points: prioritize skills you’re good at before chasing passion; prepare so opportunity meets readiness (Seneca quote); differentiate initial excitement from long-term commitment; and consider ways to mitigate risk when starting out.
If your goal is, how do I make money? But then also, how can I get passionate? What I would say is, follow what you're good at first.
Seneca said that luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. Right. So the first thing I'd say is, go prepare.
I often feel like this idea that gets pushed around on the Internet, especially on social media, about following your passion is really overrated. Like, this idea of the money will come if you just follow your passion.
Fashion. In my mind, it's a lot like lust in a relationship. Like, it's really fun and exciting that first year, but still, eventually the love chemicals wear off, and then you're kind of stuck with each other, and you got to figure out how to work, make it work. And I think love really is about commitment.
What advice would you give somebody who's just starting out, who's just, like, doesn't know what they don't know and just wants to go for it?
Oh, gosh. There's so many, like, ways to mitigate.
