Using innovation to navigate the resource recovery

Martijn Krauswerk of Nyhaus Industries explains how the 115-year-old company recovers fats, ammonia, and phosphates from wastewater, turning waste into profit. The company uses technologies like intelligent DAF units and Neo Electro-osmosis systems to reuse water and extract valuable resources.

Hi, I'm Angela Godwin with Waterworld magazine coming to you today from the BlueTech forum here in London. My guest joining me this afternoon is Martijn Krauswerk. He is with Nyhaus Industries. Martijn, thank you so much for joining us today.
Thank you. Nice to be here.
So, Nyhaus Industries, I know that innovation is really, really important to you guys. So what kinds of things are you doing in that space? How are you innov?
Well, indeed, innovation is absolutely fundamental and crucial. We like to say we turn water into profit and we turn waste into wealth. And what we mean with that is that we like to recover valuable resources and we like to reuse water and or its resources where possible. And in that context, innovation is fundamental. Not just innovation on technology side, but also how we apply it on the technology side. We've got all ways of technologies to treat and recover fats, ammonia, phosphates and all kinds of valuable raw materials or excess finished goods. But also on the way we apply it, I think that's where much more of the engineering skills and expertise goes into. And that also requires a lot of innovation. So without innovation we wouldn't be here.
Right. And you have been here for quite a long time. You're celebrating, was it 115 years?
Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, we just celebrated. I'm just relatively new to the company, but I felt with my nose in the butter, if that is English at all. But that's a Dutch saying for meeting everybody at our celebrations, for being 115 years old. And that helps us putting all the experience we've got in the continuous improvement. So not just traditional technologies like dissolved air flotation, which we're quite well known for, the DAF units. But now we make it intelligent and then we make a high rate DAF for other types of applications or the Eco FET or the Neo Electro osmosis innovations. But what that experience helps us, that we're by now with over 300 people that have built and built on every experience and now we would like to do much more on the deployment of that and scaling it up even further.
Excellent. Well, given your track record so far, I'm sure you'll be successful with that endeavor as well.
We look forward to it a lot. And one additional thing maybe I'd like to say that it also takes courage, so courage in investing to be beneficial for the company, but especially be beneficial for the customers.
Absolutely. You have to really have that bravery to just go and put yourself out there and figure it out.
So we're sticking our necks out, and we enjoy doing it.
Excellent.
It's going well so far.
Well, good. Well, we wish you all the best of luck with that going forward. And thank you so much for joining us today.
Thank you very much.
For Waterworld magazine, I'm Angela Godwin.
