Why Is Most Corporate Training Ineffective? - Thought Leadership Leverage

Most corporate training fails because it teaches skills without changing how people think or giving them tools to use what they learn. A three-part framework addresses mindset first, then skills, then the practical tools that make change stick.

Most training that companies roll out today really stinks. It actually sucks if you think about it. You have an unhappy buyer, the person in HR and training that's buying it. You have unhappy participants that have had to sit through stuff that doesn't resonate, that doesn't connect with them, that doesn't relate to what they're doing. And you have unhappy management. So why do we do it this way? Why is it that most training is ineffective? One is I don't even like the word training. I think training is something that we do to dogs. I can train a dog to catch a Frisbee. People want to learn. People want to experience. People want to taste. And I think that the way we connect with people is by looking at it 3 ways. There are— there's a mindset or a philosophy or a series of values that people people have. And a lot of times we don't want to deal with that because that's kind of squishy and we don't want to judge people. But people come to the table with a mindset, a belief system, a set of values. That's a given. Then there's a skill set. This is where most training starts. So we want to train someone in this skill and we'll skill them up, but we're going to ignore the mindset. And then there's a tool set, which is here's all the cool tricks and things and hammers and nails and whatever tools that we can develop. That will increase the skill set. So I think if you're thinking about your content in terms of how to make it more impactful, think about the mindset piece of it. What are the beliefs, the values that you want to change in people or get them to question and accept if they're serving them well or not and, and see if they want to make that journey to change it? If you can get them to understand their mindset, then getting them to embrace and enhance their skill set by using the right tools is going to work. It's going to have impact. It's going to resonate. And it's going to get people to do things better, quicker, faster, cheaper, and make a difference. Thanks so much.
