A leader guides people to places they couldn't reach alone. Like a pilot, a leader earns trust by keeping the same direction as followers, not by proving past routes were perfect.
Faith leadership. Okay, leaders take people to places they otherwise can't take themselves. Anyone ever been on an airplane ride before? Been on a flight? I've done a whole bunch of flights in my life. Never one time did I ever interrogate the pilot about where he's been. I don't care where he's been. I only care about one thing: is he going in the same direction as me?
