In this solo podcast episode, host Ralph Brewer addresses women (and men) about the daily challenges of living with an anxious‑attachment husband. He frames the discussion as a tongue‑in‑cheek 10‑part instruction manual that lists the exhaustive reassurance, precision, and control demands such men place on their partners—ranging from constant affirmation, hyper‑literal text interpretation, bans on mentioning past lovers, prohibition of finding other men attractive, hidden masturbation, suppression of partner independence, mandatory mood‑explanations, discouragement of personal growth, strict story consistency, to nightly “Do you still love me?” check‑ins. Brewer explains how these behaviors suffocate relationships, push women away, and trap men in a perpetual fear state. He argues that the solution is not more reassurance but personal work toward secure attachment, offering his book Rebuild and the Help for Men Brotherhood (private forums, live Zooms, coaching, courses) as resources for men to develop identity, mission, boundaries, and emotional leadership. The episode ends with a call to join the Brotherhood and a reminder that recognizing the problem is the first step toward change.

Today we're going to talk about something that a lot of women who live with anxious men have to deal with, on a day-to-day basis. I call this the care and feeding of the anxious husband. Consider this your official instruction manual. Ladies, I'm sorry you have to deal with this. And gentlemen, brace yourselves. Part 1: Constant reassurance. An anxious husband needs constant reassurance like a plant needs water. You need to touch him. You need to talk to him. You need to smile at him. You need to give him a lot of attention. If you do not provide him with reassurance on a regular basis, all day, every day, the anxious male, keeping with the plant metaphor, will begin to wilt. He will withdraw from you, and he will believe that you are planning your escape from him. Part 2: Your words must be precise at all times. Every word that you say to him carries weight. Every shift in tone is analyzed like a crime scene. For example, if you guys are texting each other and you reply to him with a "kay" instead of the normal "okay," then he will assume that yes, you are upset at him, and yes, it is his fault. Then he will think that, "Oh no, is this relationship ending? Is she filing for divorce tomorrow? Is she moving in with her coworker Brad?" Yes, inflection matters. The proper emoji choice matters. Extra periods in conversations where they don't belong, those matter too. Anxious men read your text messages like they are some kind of ancient prophecy. Part 3: Do not discuss your former lovers. None. Ever. Mentioning your high school boyfriend will send your anxious husband into an emotional tailspin. He will think things like, "He must be better." "She still wants him." "She's going to end up leaving me for this guy." Former lovers, crushes, celebrities, even cartoon characters are all off-limits. Never ever discuss them. Ever. Part 4: Thou shall not find other men attractive. Ever. If you casually say something about another guy like, "Oh, he's handsome," what your anxious husband hears is, "I want to have sexual intercourse with that man immediately." It doesn't matter who it is. It could be an actor, a coworker, that guy at Starbucks, some dude in a deodorant commercial. Your anxious husband sees all of these men as a very real threat to the relationship. Part 5: Masturbation must be hidden at all costs. If your anxious husband discovers that you have been pleasuring yourself, his anxious mind will interpret this as She doesn't want me. I'm not good enough. She's gonna leave me. She's just practicing for her next boyfriend. It doesn't matter how normal or healthy you may think it is. To the anxious guy, this is a full-on 5-alarm emergency alert. Part 6: Do not attempt any kind of independence. You're gonna go for a walk alone? Yep, you're gonna leave him. You're gonna go read your book upstairs? Yup, you're gonna leave him. You decide to run an errand without announcing it to him? Yup, you're cheating on him. With Mr. Anxious, there is no in-between here. Part 7: Always account for your shift in your mood. If you are tired or stressed out or you just feel like being quiet in the moment, your anxious husband will assume the worst. You must provide a detailed explanation for your sudden shift in behavior. What happened? Why did it happen? How do you feel? And assure your anxious husband that this is in no way his fault and it has nothing to do with him. If you could get this signed and notarized, even better. Part 8: Do not grow as a person. If you improve your health, your social status, your confidence, your anxious husband will feel that you are leveling up past him. Self-improvement to the anxious guy is seen as a form of emotional infidelity. Part 9: Make sure that you always keep your story consistent. If you said something last month and that story differs from what you're saying today, oh boy, the anxious guy will notice, and he will bring this up as if he's grilling a murder suspect. He's not trying to trap you, he is just terrified of uncertainty. After all, he's convinced you're gonna leave him. And Part 10: The nightly "Do you still love me?" check-in. Every anxious husband requires a daily nightly reset or check-in. If you are tired, stressed out, or just simply not in the mood for any hanky-panky right now, you must now provide to him the following: a clear explanation A reassurance statement. A sworn affidavit showing that yes, you still love him. And bonus points if you say all of this twice. If you do not initiate the self-reassurance sequence at the end of every day, he's going to assume that she doesn't want me, I'm failing as a man, she's leaving me, she's screwing Brad at work, or just all of the above simultaneously. When in reality, you just wanted to get some sleep. So guys, why did I make this video? Obviously, this is not a legit instruction manual for women. I am placing a mirror in front of you, the anxious husband. Guys, this is what anxious attachment looks like from the outside to secure people. It's suffocating. It's very unattractive. It pushes women away. And at the same time, it keeps you locked in, in a permanent state of fear. You cannot fix this by getting more reassurance from her. How you fix it is by becoming a man who can stand on his own. This is exactly why I wrote the book Rebuild. Men need a framework for identity, for mission, for boundaries, and for emotional leadership, which you are not showing right now at all. And this is also why the Brotherhood exists, our private community, For Men Only. We have hundreds of men doing the work every single day. We have live meetings, private discussion forums, one-on-one coaching, accountability, all designed to help turn you, Mr. Anxious, around and becoming a more secure individual. So check it out at help4men.com/join. If this video stung a little bit, good. That means you're ready to take a left turn instead of a right this time. You do not have to keep being the anxious husband. You can build yourself into something that the wife doesn't need an instruction manual for how to handle on a day-to-day basis. Thank you so much for watching, and I look forward to seeing you in our next member meeting.
