Asking for What You Want and Need in Your Relationships

Rebeccah Silence coaches Dana through why she struggles to ask for what she needs in relationships. Dana traces the pattern back to age 10, when she learned to abandon herself to keep the peace. The session reframes shame and regret as protective strategies that block anger, fear, and grief, then maps out how to start telling the truth about what she actually wants.
The emotions that if we connect to them powerfully and are willing to be in a healthy relationship with them, it heals everything. Our anger, fear, grief, joy, excitement, everything else is learned. So let's get you through what feels like an emotion but is actually a way you're coping to protect yourself from further heartbreak. Do you follow me and hear the difference?
Yeah, I think it's fear.
Well, I think there's fear and there's sadness, but what I'm talking about is shame, regret, disappointment. These are ways that you're coping to help you not have to risk further heartbreak.
Oh, that's what's holding me back.
Right. And it's ok. It's just. Let's look at the emotions we want to feel into their useful as opposed to the emotional experience that is a dead end that you learned that helps you not have to feel more heartbreak. But when you're avoiding the heartbreak, you're keeping yourself in a purgatory that prevents you from actually getting what you want.
Okay, we're going.
Okay, three, two, one.
We're going.
How the hell do I get my needs met in relationship? How do I have relationship and not lose myself? Today's episode of the healing is possible experience is here for you. Listen to the entire episode. Today we have a very brave guest, Anna, who's here to be coached through her blocks to receiving and knowing how to get her needs met and knowing how to ask for what she needs in relationship. The healing is possible experience is here to take you on a journey of hope and healing. And I'm Rebecca Silence, your host, emotional healing and relationship coach, here to break us through the blocks to life and love and to experiencing the best of ourselves and the best of life. I've been doing this a long time, using my journey to give other people hope and access to what's possible. After healing through my own seemingly impossible traumas, including a domestic violence marriage, including cancer while pregnant and a 5% chance to make it. And here I am. And if healing is possible for me, it's possible for you too, and for all of us. I want you to have all of your dreams come true. Today we're going to work with Dana to get her closer to her dreams coming true. And with that, Dana, welcome to the show and thank you for your courage and for just being willing to be here today. Tell us why you're here. What had you choose to come on the show and take this leap?
Well, I started a healing journey probably like, I don't know, a few years ago. So it's been on and off trying to get to the place I want to be, the person I want to be. I think recently I went through a breakup and I just, I realized a lot of things through that that I needed to change or learn in order to have a better relationship and get what I need out of those relationships. I'm still really about it, so.
Well, that's beautiful. And let's just talk about emotions for a moment. And at this point, I want you to just imagine it's just you and me and that you deserve to feel how you want to feel and have the actual standards of what you're looking for realized and the reality that is your day to day. And our emotions. I just want to kind of debunk a couple of myths about emotions because they're not threatening and they're not wrong or bad, and they're not here in your face, literally, and up because anything's wrong with you. They're here because you're ready to move through what's been in the way. So the emotions are the guidance and the gateway to the freedom, to the breakthrough, to the new reality. And it's our blocks to being willing to move through those emotions that keep us stuck, that keep us suffering and in our own patterns. So thank you for modeling what it takes to actually be in the practice of emotional healing. Tell us, because you and I are just meeting literally five minutes before the show. I don't know, Dana. We haven't worked together yet, so, you know, I'm not sure where this, this episode's going, where the show is going, where our work together today is going, But I know it's going to be good. And let's just have you share a little bit more specifically about what you want. I think it's really important to start there. So you've been through some trauma. A breakup here, it's heavy on your heart. It's new. We're in the transition of you getting out of a relationship as well as the transition of being at the very beginning of a new calendar year. But what are you knowing that you want now that maybe you didn't have clarity around before this breakup?
I think, you know, I also went through a divorce five years ago, so I think I'm looking and I want, like, a partner that can ride those waves, you know, and have stability and understand that, you know, it's not going to be perfect, you know, and that we're both going to bring problems and issues into the relationship, you know, because everybody has baggage and we're Going to have to heal. And so I just, I want a stable relationship. I want to be happy family, I want a partner. I want to live my life and move forward with somebody that wants the same thing, you know?
Well, and you are so not alone. Our audience, I am certain, has so many people watching that are going, yes, Dan, yes. Like, I want this too. So when you talk about family, can you just tell me and close your eyes if you want, but tell me what your ideal picture of family is, because what I'm hearing is you want that long term committed relationship. Is that accurate? Like, and, and tell me which word resonates more. Are you wanting stable or are you wanting committed?
I guess committed. Like, I mean, I think make using the word interchangeable. And I think my partner used to use stable. That was his thing. Like we have to be stable before we move in together, stuff like that. And so it's committed and a committed relationship. Yeah. And like marriage, like a family would just be like a unit. You know, we live together, we function together, we build a life together. That sort of thing is what I would like, you know, somebody to go through life.
Yeah. Take a deep breath and feel this. You're moving so much energy and releasing so much already. Are you wanting children or are you just wanting you and your partner committed and a unit and a team?
I'm open to more kids. I have a child now and I'm not old, but I'm not young. I'm 40. So the possibility is still there. And I would at least, I think I would like at least one more if possible. If not, I think I could be happy with just a partner and my son and I as a family unit.
Hey, can I, can I lovingly challenge you a little bit? So close your eyes and consider that if it's possible, it's accessible, whatever it might be. So you are especially desiring a family unit because you already are a built in family unit. You have a child. And I want to hear more about your child in a moment. But I want you to invite yourself to break through committing only to what you think is realistic and to let yourself begin the process of committing to what you, Dana, desire, regardless of whether it's not or not. It's realistic. How does that feel? How does that land?
Like, I guess I feel like I know it's possible to have another child and I would if I, you know, met a partner and we agreed upon that. I guess I. I don't know, you know, that feels. I think there's a blockage in Me that because I had some miscarriages in the past, and. Yeah, it just feels like I'm not sure if I can, you know, move forward and really have a child. And so that is scary for me to really, like, swallow and be like, yeah, I'm gonna have another child. Right. Because there's no for sure about that.
Right. So, yeah, let's feel that. What are the emotions that are up as you're sharing these very vulnerable truths?
Just a lot of sadness, but a lot of regret. And I guess I don't know if it's shame or just the feeling that you, you know, like, I did something wrong when, you know there's something wrong with me, that I can't have kids, things like that. Those emotions, you know, just feeling disappointed, you know, in myself too sometimes. And I think going back to, it's not just the losing the pregnancies, but losing my marriage, you know, and then losing this last relationship, it just, you know, feels like a lot of failure for me.
Keep breathing and keep feeling that. And I want to share with you a new perspective around emotions. The only emotion you actually just listed was sadness, disappointment, shame, regret. These are all actually learned coping skills.
Okay.
We're not born knowing that shame is even a thing. We are born innately having access to the human emotion of sadness. The only five emotions we're born with that are actually the emotions that if we connect to them powerfully and are willing to be in a healthy relationship with them, it heals everything are anger, fear, grief, joy, excitement. Everything else is learned.
Right. And it's okay. It's just. Let's look at the emotions we want to feel into their useful as opposed to the emotional experience that is a dead end that you learned that helps you not have to feel more heartbreak. But when you're avoiding the heartbreak, you're keeping yourself in a purgatory that prevents you from actually getting what you want.
Yeah, yeah.
Is all that landing?
Yeah, that makes sense.
Okay, so the other piece of this. So let's get into what you've learned and how you're Coping and how we can experience loss differently and how we can actually lose. Use loss to your advantage in the pursuit of actually getting what you want and getting your needs met. Do you follow me there?
Yeah.
Okay.
Those feelings to move forward.
Yeah. And there's a big difference between the emotions we need to feel to emotionally heal and the feelings we're having about what's going on outside of us and around us. And what I know for sure is that the regret, the disappointment and the shame has been louder than. Than your ability to see that what you really want is possible for you.
Yeah.
So what happens when I say that? What are you feeling? What are you experiencing?
Seeing that makes me, I guess, feel a lot happier than that. It's recognizing. I can change that, I guess.
Yeah. We can work with it. We can use trauma to our advantage. We can use heartbreak to our advantage. We can use life in all of its seasons to. To our advantage. But not when we're in our survival personality trying to protect ourselves.
That's right.
Right. And you can't have both. You can't have a commitment to what you want and desire and be in self protection at the same time. It's one or the other. So it seems as though the self protection has been more and louder and in your forefront instead of the commitment to what you really want being what's driving every area of your life. And if you won't commit to what you really want until there's some type of a guarantee that you won't get hurt, we're not going to commit to what we want.
Yeah.
How are you hearing that? How are you feeling this?
It makes me. It's. I think, I feel like, really, Is this really possible for me? Like, can I really move forward? Can I really do this and not end these feelings and be sad all the time? That's how I feel.
Well, and the feelings of regret, shame and disappointment are actually blocking your ability to move through the sadness. So it's not even that you're wanting to be sad all the time or that you're even sad all the time. You're avoiding all the sadness you would need to feel to not be sad all the time.
Yes, I avoid feeling. All right.
Except for today. You're freaking kicking ass and taking names, babe. I'm telling you, like, this is some good stuff. So let's take another deep breath. Let's go back to the loss. Okay. Because it feels to me that your avoiding more loss more than anything else. Does that feel accurate? Yeah.
Because I'm still trying to get the relation back together.
Well, what if. Close your eyes for me. If you're open. What if the most important relationship that we need to heal and repair right now is the one with you?
Yeah, it is.
So how old is the version of you that was deeply heartbroken and doesn't want to experience more loss? How old is that part of you? What age? Take a guess.
Probably between 8 and 12. Somewhere in there.
What's your gut pick? An age?
Maybe 10.
10? Okay, so take a deep breath. And can you see Dana at 10 in all of her preciousness and beauty and optimism in front of you right now?
Yeah.
Look her right in the eyes. What does it feel like to connect to you so innocently and purely?
I don't know, it kind of feels joyful, I guess, to see myself take.
That in, breathe in and allow yourself to see and receive the experience of embracing you at an age where you still knew and trusted what you wanted. Yeah. Now why does 10 year old Dana question her deservingness to get what she wants? What's going on with her?
I think at that age I probably goes back to my parents, you know, like just, I don't. It was me and my brother and I. I don't remember my parents being too around that much. So I think I just felt like that was what life was, you know?
Okay, so this is so profound. So just take a deep breath and consider that at 10 years old you decided I'm going to be on my own and people aren't going to be around that are supposed to love me and take care of me.
Yeah, I felt like I had to take care of my little brother, like, so I didn't, I don't know, like, you know, I just didn't really ask my parents for anything. I don't, I don't remember, you know, and I remember just my brother and he was sick and like just. And, you know, took care of him. I feel like.
And is your child a son or a daughter that you have now?
Fun. Yeah.
Is he sick at all or is he healthy?
He's healthy. He's nine.
Okay, but you're still in that experience of it's me taking care of someone else, not the one getting my needs met.
Yeah. And my career is that way. I'm a nurse Then.
Okay, so breathe this in and consider what's working about this we can keep and what's not working about this we can transform and reinvent this pattern that has continued. Some of it is valuable. For example, are you enjoying your career as A nurse. Is this the right career for you?
I don't. I like helping people, but the actual job I'm in. No, I like. I like aspects of my career. Yes.
Say that last part again.
I like aspects of my career.
Right, okay, so. So we'll just take it off of the pressure of family and romance and relationship and just apply this concept to work for a second. So you can see that you're a giver, you're a server. You want to help, you want to work with people, but potentially not at your own expense anymore. Like, there's parts of what you're doing day to day that work for you, and there's parts that aren't. So let's look at what we want, the direction we want to be going in. Let's look at what's working, and then let's get very committed to what's not working. We're not going to commit to anymore. Like, it's a be all, end all. There is no other way.
Yeah. Okay.
So what are you feeling? I saw you just lighten up so fast. Take a deep breath. Tell me what's your. What's. What's happening? What are you processing?
That makes me happy to be able to just find, like, something where I can still, you know, help people and give, but not to, like, just be drowning in other people's problems. Right?
Like. Yeah.
And do it.
All right, I'm gonna say something that might be a little hard to have permission to, you know, kind of go here with you.
Yeah.
Yeah, is okay. Okay. So just let's consider something. Did anybody actually ever ask you to give you up for them? Or was that just a decision you made at 10 unconsciously?
Did they ever ask me? No.
Okay, this is really important, Dana. You made up your job description. In relationships, it's not a job description that's assigned to you. It's not a job description that's your destiny. Giving you up for love seems to be an unconscious. And that word is so freaking important here. It's not your fault. It wasn't even conscious. It's just. You had a sick sibling. Your parents weren't available. They couldn't be more available for you than their parents were for them. They did their best. And I work with the generational healers, Dana. I work with the ones that say, this could be different, this could be better. How come nobody else sees it? And then that is the person in the family system that often just questions themselves because nobody else sees what they're seeing as possible. So if nobody else Sees it. How can it actually be possible? Do you see how we stunt our own emotional and spiritual growth when we're the visionary in the family system, needing the validation from the family to actually honor what we see as possible? That's not a way to live or do family.
No, it's true.
Like, all right, is this landing? So all I'm saying is you haven't done a damn thing wrong, and we can make a new commitment. Because on an unconscious level, what I see as what happened innocently was you decided that love means I give me up for them. And when you've been giving you up, your partners don't even actually have a partner.
That's true.
That's why your relationships aren't working. And that's not your fault. And the right partner would stick around and grow with you. I want to be really clear on that. So it's not that you've ever driven the right person away, it's that you've been driving you away and attracting partners willing to be with somebody, the back burners themselves, so that they can take the spotlight. And you're done with that game.
Yeah.
Is any part of this off base? Now take a deep breath. I want you to breathe into the possibility that you are done backburnering you in the name of love. You are done with self betrayal in the name of service.
Yeah, yeah.
Your time. And can you see that without meaning to be, you were committed to more of the same. You were committed to reinforcing. This is what happens to me in relationship and family. I give, I give, I give, they take, they take, they take, then I lose. What's it like to put these puzzle pieces together? And is this. Is this new? Are you seeing the pattern in a new way?
Yeah, it's pretty mind blowing to me. I think, you know, in my marriage, I 100% did that. I let him do whatever, you know, without me saying it's not working. You know, and then with my last relationship, I, you know, spoke up more, but I. I wasn't able to, you know, I. I wasn't a partner. It's true. You know, I was letting him drive the boat. So it makes a lot of sense now that to put those pieces together where.
Yeah. And, you know, let's get off of any assumption or expectation that doesn't align with your truth about what family and relationships should look like. So what I mean by that is we learn what we think it should be, and then if it doesn't look how we think it should look, we think something's wrong with us.
Yeah.
Think that we are the disappointment. We think that we are the problem. We think that we've somehow done it wrong because it isn't the way it should be, but the way it should be. Says who? Like you are already a single mother. Yes.
Yeah. Okay.
And you have a precious nine year old. It's a perfect time for you to take on your power and for you to model for your son. In this family, we get our needs met. In this family, everybody matters. In this family, I'm the sun, moon and stars in the heartbeat. Yeah.
How do you do that?
So first and foremost, I'm going to make it really simple. Doesn't make it easy. It's a decision. Let's close your eyes again. Do you remember the choose your own adventure books when we were kids? Yeah.
I love those.
I want you to imagine that we're right now, right here, right now in Dana's choose your own adventure. How are relationships and family going to be from here on out? Knowing we can use the contrast of what was the heartbreaks to our advantage, manage to make new decisions, to create new experiences. When something isn't working for Dana moving forward, it's a non negotiable. We don't continue. We figure out what would work instead. And we trust that the right people what actually want Dana getting her needs met. As much as everyone gets to get their needs met, Dana gets to get her needs met too. So I want you to see we've got paths in this choose your own adventure book that can lead you down more of the same. Scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the most, 1 being the least. How interested are you in doing what you've always done? Experiencing relationship and family the way you've been?
Oh gosh. One. Not at all.
Okay, so we're done with that now. I want you to see that there's a path in front of you. There's an adventure awaiting. And what would it be like for everybody watching to make relationship an experience that's an adventure versus it's an experience that is grueling, that is torture, that is gut wrenching and heartbreaking. Relationship can become an adventure because we decide that from here on out. And it's an adventure worth taking. And I want you to see that it can be whatever you want it to be. And that you can be the you that's willing to take the risk that moves beyond managing and mitigating heartbreak after heartbreak and loss after loss. And decides, Dana, that from this point forward, not only is relationship an adventure, and an adventure worth having. But it's your right to have exactly what you want. And it is worth it to take the risk that you might get heartbroken again so that you can finally experience what you've always imagined and known that you could.
Yeah, I want that.
Galen. One to ten. How much?
Ten. Yeah.
Okay. Okay. So open your eyes and look at me, Diana. Relationship. It starts with your relationship with you. And when you have been willing to abandon yourself, betray yourself and lose yourself in the name of love, we know how that chapter ends. We know where that path leads you. And it wasn't that you did anything wrong. Which one of your parents was the one that kind of gave themselves up in the name of love that you watched do this?
Oh gosh, probably both of them in their own way. My mom.
Which one do you resonate with more on? Okay, so not only did at 10 you decide you needed to take care of your brother because your parents weren't doing the job the way you thought they should and you decided you needed to be back burnered for him to get his needs met, but you also were modeling someone else's methodology paradigm survival tactics. It's not even you. It's not even your desire to give you up. It's just what you learned. And it's just what on an unconscious level became the expectation that is what you regret. You regret loving and experiencing family and relationship in somebody else's way.
Yeah.
So let's just change it and have a lot of, a lot of compassion for yourself here. You've done nothing wrong. And what doesn't work doesn't work. You know, my coach likes to say, if the math ain't math and the math ain't math, so the math ain't math. And when you're giving you up in the name of love for any reason. So here's where we go next. Okay, I'm going to give everybody watching three ways to take your relationship with you on in such a way that it changes everything about every relationship you're ever going to have for the rest of your life. Okay, so here's where we go from here. We recognize that it's about commitment, commitment, commitment, commitment. And when we're committed to survival, when we're committed to protection, we only get more pain every single time. So a new commitment is to self love and self respect. That's step one. I am committed to self love and self respect. I am committed to self love and self respect. This is your new mantra on repeat if you need to voice text yourself and Save it so you can hear your own voice. I commit to self love and self respect. Self love, self respect. Self love, self respect. This is Dana's year of self love and self respect. And everybody watching, this is your year of self love and self respect. And that never hurt anyone. And that never caused collateral damage. Let me just say that again because it is freaking huge for all of us. And I'm receiving this for me, too. Self love and self respect never did any harm. Never in history. Never, never, never, never. Now, that doesn't mean that people, especially the narcissists in your life, aren't going to want you how they want you. Jumping through their hoops, proving that you love them in a way that sacrifices you so that they can feel secure and stable. Your partner's X word, right? You know, the point is that the more you self love and self respect, the more you attract people that love themselves and respect themselves. And if they don't love and respect themselves, how the hell are they going to love and respect you? And if you don't love and respect yourself, how are you actually going to attract people that love and respect themselves and would love and respect you? Are you following me, Dana?
Yes. Okay.
Self love and self respect, baby number two. We've got to be brave enough to tell the truth in our relationships, starting in our relationship with ourselves. If we're not brave enough to tell the truth about what works, what doesn't, what we need, what we're done with, how are we going to be able to communicate that with another?
Yes.
Okay, so it's time. I want you to do a journaling. Practice what love and respects mean now, what takes care of me, what honors me, what would be loving towards me and what respects me now is. So you're going to write it down. You're going to tell the truth about who you are now, what you need now and what you're unwilling not to have now, and then you got to commit to it. So this is the third step. That again, it's not easy, but man, is it freaking simple, you know? And there's no way I'd be alive, there's no way I would have come out the other side of cancer without a commitment to me and to loving me into making my life matter above all else. And the more I honor and respect and love me, and the more I see how beautiful my life can be, the more I take care of love and honor me, just the better and better it gets. And it doesn't make it easy when people that we Love we recognize are no longer healthy or no longer meant for our path. Right now, your path isn't meant to have every person you've ever met stay with you. Your path is meant to have you stay with you in all of your humanity, in all of your seasons, while you see what's aligned now. So commit to what's aligned. Let the rest go. Giving people a chance to grow. Grow with you and go with you. I always say, don't just, you know, throw the baby out with the bathwater. Don't just kick people out of your life without saying, hey, here's what's working for me about our relationship. Here's what I would like to be different. Are you willing to grow with me? Give them a chance to grow with you. And if they're just a hard no, this is how it should be. This is what's wrong with you. How dare you. Then we know this isn't aligned. If they're like, wow, this is challenging. I'm not loving this conversation. It's uncomfortable. But I'm willing to. Awesome. Because what's going to happen, Dana, is they're either going to easily work with you, they're going to get mad, get over it, and work with you, or they're going to fall away. And if they're going to fall away, let's let them. Because it makes room for the next level. And you deserve better than attracting people that want to take up all of the light and space and oxygen in the room. You deserve to be the one. Every room you walk into that the spotlights on. And not because you're wanting to be arrogant, but because you are precious and your light is gorgeous and you are the one that's been dimming it down. And you no longer have to do that in 2023 or in any season of your life. So this is just the beginning. We can't solve everything in this breakthrough session today, but, man, did we create an opening.
Yeah, for sure. Yeah.
Okay. Any questions? Is there any part of this that feels sticky or is it landing for you?
It lands. It's. The sticky is just. I guess. I guess it just unfolds. It's. I don't know that I can, like, I'm gonna wait. Be able to go and just be that. I don't know. We'll see how the damn folds, you know, but that's. That's what I want. I want to be empowered in myself.
Exactly. So I will leave you with this. All I'm asking you to do is take on self love. And a commitment to what's best for you, what honors you, what respects you and what takes care of you now. And it's just a decision based process. Your commitment requires decisions that align with your new commitment and a version of you that's unwavering in your willingness to be vulnerable and committed to yourself and to let people see that and experience that. So at work as a nurse, no more either or. Like it's them or me. The more you're taken care of, the better you serve your patients.
Yeah.
In relationships, it's no more. It's them or me. It's me first, so I can be even better for them. That's the new paradigm that I'm inviting you to consider and take on and work with and play with.
Yes. I actually have a job interview today to leave.
Oh.
Oh. Get it.
Go get it. And from this energy, create an environment that works for you. And you can do that in any relationship, in any situation. And it's always about prioritizing you with you first. So that's going to be what's new. I adore you. I am honored to have had this time and space with you. Did you get what you needed today? Yeah.
I think that helped me tremendously. Thank you.
You are so welcome. What's your biggest takeaway?
Just that it's okay to focus on myself and to take care of myself first and to really have those conversations, even though it feels selfish to get what I need. And if it doesn't happen, then I know that I can move forward with.
Myself and with commitment. There's nothing that can't happen. Okay. This is so important because what you're saying our audience needs to hear and what I'm saying our audience needs to hear. When you're fully committed, there are no conditions. It's a matter of when, not if. So if you really, for example, want another child, you can adopt. Like, it's not just. It has to look a certain way. And if it happens, great. And if it doesn't, I'll be okay. Don't give up on your right to have exactly what you want in this lifetime.
And it's okay.
I just want to say this one more piece. It's okay if after considering all of the angles, I'm not actually willing to commit to this. Yeah, it's okay to really be careful and choosy about what you commit to with the understanding that you're under no obligation to commit to anything that doesn't feel like it's worth it to go all in with. But if it's something that your soul desires, players on such a deep level that you would have regret and disappointment and shame if you didn't have it, man, do you have to go for it? Man, do you have to own your right to have it and be in the pursuit of it? How I beat cancer was I decided I'm unwilling to die. And I knew it was bigger than me. I knew I might die, but I chose to live like I was going to live. And I chose to live like I was going to live unless I was dead. Not we'll see if I live, we'll see if I die. I hope I live. We'll see. I'll be okay either way. Like, do you hear. Yeah, faulty funky bullshit there. Like, we'll see is you not taking your life into your own hands.
Yeah.
I know my power. I know my strength. I know I'm capable. I know I'm worth it. That's the energy I want us all committing from with there being no other option. But I do cross the finish line.
Yes.
Find those commitments and commit on that level. You'll never be disappointed again.
And I am committed to myself. Yeah.
