Confession Tuesday 11-25-14 "Strength in sharing medical scare"

A radio segment (posted to YouTube) where life coach Rebeccah Silence shares optimistic medical news: an oncologist gave a 90% chance her skin cancer is gone, she has surgery scheduled to remove more skin from her arm, and she is expecting a baby. The host and Rebeccah discuss the emotional impact of a cancer scare. The segment also reads a listener email about ongoing cervical cell problems and a prior hysterectomy; Rebeccah offers coaching: seeking multiple medical opinions, finding healers/resources, practicing acceptance and self-compassion, and building a five-person support network for tough times (especially holidays).
It is confession Tuesday. Local life coach Rebecca silence is in studio. Inspired results, coach.com. first question out the box. How are you feeling?
Great. I feel really good. I met with an oncologist yesterday in Buffalo and really, really good news. 90% chance that all the skin cancer is gone. And then they will do a couple of.
I'm sorry. 90% chance.
90% chance.
That's awesome.
That is gonna do a surgery next week to take out more of my arm just to make sure, and then we can have our baby next week.
Just the. On the arm. Not like. Oh, yeah.
Yes.
Yeah. She's not gonna lose, like, a big hunk of it.
Wow. They're just gonna take some skin, and then I can have the baby naturally. And I just have to be followed pretty regularly for about five years. I have to wear a big, giant sun hat. I have to see a dermatologist. So anybody has recommendations, let us know. And I have to wear, you know, a lot of sunscreen for the rest of my life. But very good news. We're really, really grateful.
That's fantastic. That's fantastic. Because, you know, anytime the C word, you know, is thr, you know, the world stops. Like, the clock stops. So congratulations.
Yeah. So two weeks from diagnosis to, you know, next week's surgery, it'll all be handled, which is a miracle.
Oh, wow.
So fast.
That is. That's great. And everything's happy, healthy with the baby.
Everything's perfect.
Awesome.
Yeah. Yeah, we're really good. So thank you, everyone, for all of your support.
That's absolutely great.
Yeah.
You know, and again, how this radio program and these segments kind of work out is, you know, we're talk about what's going on in our lives, and people submit their stories.
Yes.
And it's amazing how you end up touching people and affecting people you don't even think about. Case in point, here is an email we got right after we talked about what was going on with you last week.
Okay.
All right. Dear Rebecca, I heard you this morning saying, don't be afraid of the doctor and finding out what's going on. And that got me. I've been avoiding the doctor for 2 years. I've had a bad pap since I was 16. Pre cergical cancer cells had many procedures to remove cells, and they always came back. So I was pushed into a hysterectomy at 26, and Pap came back again showing atypical cells. And at first I was mad, sad, hurt, and devastated that I would never have another baby because the doc said that this was the only way to get rid of the bad ce. And then they're back anyway. And then time went by. And as mad as I am, I'm also scared to know how or why I still have bad cells even after having my womanhood taken from me.
Wow. Thank you for being brave and for being so honest and writing that in. And you're absolutely right, Gary. The emails that come into this show, you have no idea how many people can relate to your story. Byron, Katie says that there's no new form of suffering that we. We can all relate to anyone's experience. And, you know, it's very difficult sometimes to accept a reality that doesn't seem attractive to us. It's very difficult to accept that. And I don't actually coach people to totally accept what's happening, but what I want people to consider and what I did with this cancer diagnosis was I went to a place where I tried to find evidence and reasons that I would be willing for what was happening to happen. It doesn't mean I have to like it. It doesn't mean it's a good thing or that I want it to happen again. But why would I be willing for this to happen? And then what type of lessons could I learn? And you never know with your own leadership and your experience, how you're modeling and affecting change in the lives of the people closest to you. So for you, I would want you to consider how is all of this a gift to you? Not again saying that I want you to like it. But what is this giving you? Is it giving you an opportunity to get to know your body better? Is it giving you an opportunity to be gentle with yourself and an opportunity to practice unconditional love for yourself? Because regardless of what's going on in your body, you're lovable, you're worthy, you're deserving. And I don't believe there's anything wrong with any of us, including our bodies. I think our bodies are miracles. And they're always showing us something, they're always guiding us, even if it doesn't seem like it in the moment. And so your ability to get real with the situation, and, you know, I would encourage you to get doctors. And then here's the other thing, we don't have to believe everything we hear, right? You don't have to just see one doctor and believe it. There may be some new doctors that you could talk to, get differing opinions, get differing treatment plans. You don't have to accept at face value anything that doesn't fill you up. Or lift your spirits, you can get more opinions. And then again, don't quit until you've got a support system around you that you feel good about. And then that's the second piece for everyone. No matter what you're going through, please have a support system. Especially this time of year. Holidays can be hard. Holidays. It's kind of like, you know, starting about tomorrow, Pandora's box will open.
Oh, trust me, we're going to. We're going to talk holidays in the next segment. Don't you worry about holidays? Yeah, we'll talk about holidays.
But this is just a time of year where things get louder than normal. And then regardless of what time of the year it is, please have a support system. Have people in your inner circle that you can go to that you know. Here's how you figure out who should go in your inner circle. By the way, who do you know will love you no matter what? If they won't love you no matter what, they don't belong in your inner circle. Right. If I've got someone in my inner circle that will always question me, tell me I'm wrong, tell me what to do. They don't belong in that inner circle. It doesn't mean they don't belong in my life. But why would I have you as my main confidant if every time I talk to you, you fight me? And then a lot of people do that. They have people in their inner circle that they wish would show up in a certain way that don't. And it's a setup for total disappointment. But if you can have at least five people, five people that are your go to, and the reason I say that is because, you know, sometimes people aren't available. And it's not fair if I only have one or two go tos and then they're not available for me to be upset that they're not available. People have lives. And so what we want is, no, to be dependent on people, but to have a system and a network of people that you can go to when you need something. And so what I encourage you to do, listener, is stay positive. There's a great author, her name is Louise Hay. She wrote a book called you'd Can Heal youl Life. And what It Is is all about just affirmations and things you can do to look at your part and your energy that's going into your body. So Louise Hay had gotten cancer in her 60s and started her company called Hay House, wrote this book youk Can Heal youl Life. It's amaz So I encourage you to check that out to find healers that you feel good about. Don't go just by the first opinion and then please have a support system. Everyone out there, at least five people that you know will love you no matter what. And then you never know who will really show up for you until you put yourself out there. So don't operate under the false assumption that nobody's going to actually show up for you. You have no idea until you put yourself out there.
