She has something for everybody and can help you no matter what your issue is or what your goal is. I want to talk about bullying.
Okay.
Okay. I know that you. In fact, I've seen it. You actually go to schools and do seminars with the kids about bullying. Back to school time. It is prime time bullying season. No matter how much we say, if you see something, say something. Unfortunately, it creeps back up every single year. So I'm just going to give you this blanket form to talk about bullying. And if you're the victim of bullying, what should you do?
Okay. Thank you. You know, and it's interesting because it isn't just back to school, right? Adults deal with this.
You know what, it's funny. We actually had a conversation about this last night, and that was one of the things I said, because adults have to deal with it, too. And you really have to learn how to deal with it when you're younger. Otherwise it just keeps repeating all throughout your life, Right?
And kids are basically watching the adults in their lives to figure out how to handle situations. And adults, you know, are just doing what they learned until they learn something new. So the point is that there are people in the world that get mean. And I think the first thing to understand about bullies is that they are hurt. Hurt people, hurt people. So it doesn't justify the behavior or make it okay. But what you can know is that whoever is being the bully, and again, it doesn't matter what age the person is, somebody hurt them, right? So that's just something to understand. And the ripple is insanely significant because if a bully got hurt, then they start bullying. Then the person they bullied start bullying, starts to bully. It just keeps spreading like dominoes, right? And, you know, people that are bullying are trying to take the power back because they feel like it was taken away from them, right? And then once we start to wake up to the fact that each of us have confidence, and I talk when I'm in schools about kids imagining that they have this little crystal ball and it's their personal power, and we all have personal power. We just forget sometimes. And what I want people to understand is it doesn't matter. People call you a name or if they put you down or ignore you or they're cruel unless you believe what they're saying and unless you engage in it. I want kids, adults.
Say that again.
So it doesn't matter, okay, how people treat you, because that isn't you. Does it matter if they're cruel? Yes. That ripples out into the world and it has a negative impact, but you do not have to take on people's negative crap. And what they say about you, I would love for you to imagine they might as well be telling you that you're a pink you unicorn with wings. You're not. It doesn't matter. You don't have to believe this nonsense. And it's something that I get, really.
Some people may be disappointed because I think they want to be a pink unicorn with wings.
Well, you know, this is what I say to the kids, though. Are you. Are you pink with purple polka dots? Right? Like, so what? They called you dumb. So what? They called you fat. And it doesn't mean it doesn't hurt. But what I'm saying is don't believe it, because it only hurts if you believe it. And then you.
That's what I was going for. It only hurts if you believe it.
It only hurts if you believe it. And soak it up like a sponge, absorb it, and decide that that somehow defines you. People are gonna have opinions, and their opinion about you is not a fact, and you have a right to exist.
Okay, so here's. Here's the question. A child is getting bullied, and they ask them to stop, and it's not stopping, and they're doing their best to not feed into it and whatnot. What do they do?
So the most important thing is talk to an adult in the school. Every child should have at least one adult in the building that they feel connected to and that they respect and that they know respects them. So the thing that makes it worse is avoiding thinking, oh, it'll just get better if I ignore it. I don't want to handle this because I don't want to make it worse. Handle it, handle it, handle it, handle it. And talk to somebody in the building and let them know what's going on. And the thing to understand is that all people, even if we're being treated with respect, can be respectful. But you've got to lead in respecting yourself for people to get that you're somebody that doesn't tolerate disrespect. And each of us, I don't care how old we are, we Once we're aware of the fact that I don't have to take crap from anybody, then you can start leading in that people pick on people that will allow themselves to get picked on.
Right.
And nobody deserves to get picked on. I don't care who you are. And it's really, really important. And especially the people that say, if you tell anybody about this, I'm gonna make it worse, that's the time to go tell somebody. Instantly. Instantly.
Absolutely.
If they say don't tell you, you go tell. And it isn't real that they can make it worse. Consider this. It already sucks. How much worse can it get? Go handle it. Go have a voice. Be a stand. I am a former school counselor and I do have an assertiveness training that I want kids to learn and what it is I teach them. The difference between being like a doormat or that bulldozer type bully or somebody that assumes, assertively, communicates and behaves in a way where they respect themselves and other people. But what I'll leave us with today is you deserve to be treated with respect. Understand that the bully is just trying to take their power back because somebody hurt them. And you don't need to keep that ripple going. And if somebody is mean to you, they are not your friend. So do not hang out with people that are mean to you and then apologize later and then are mean to you again and then apologize. No. If they're mean to you, then no, they don't deserve you.
