A short YouTube monologue by Rebecca (a Silence Inspired results coach) for National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. She defines domestic violence broadly to include emotional abuse and intimidation (not only physical violence), encourages viewers to research mental abuse, domestic violence, and codependence, and urges people to learn community resources, stay connected to loved ones and to themselves, and avoid tolerating relationship behaviors that diminish their sense of self. The clip frames October as a time to strengthen independence and support others.
Hi, I'm Rebecca. Silence Inspired results Coach It's October, which is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and I just wanted to say a few words about domestic violence, what to look for, and how you can be of support to the people you love. Domestic violence comes in many different shapes and sizes. It's not just physical brawling behind closed doors. There can also be emotional abuse in relationships where people are intimidating the other partner. They're trying to. Trying to scare their partner into submission, potentially name calling and overall just creating a situation where the dynamic is a very violent and aggressive dynamic. It doesn't again, have to be physical, it can also be emotional. What I encourage everyone to do is to research mental abuse, research domestic violence, and research codependence. Codependence is where you're needy in a relationship where you're dependent on the other person for you to either be okay or not okay. In my experience, another person cannot make or break you. But research codependence just so you can learn about what it is and how to keep yourself independent in your relationships for you to be of greatest support to people. Research your community. Research what you can do to help spread the word about domestic violence. Look for what your resources are in your community. Spread the word about what they are, but most of all, just stay connected to the people you love. Stay, stay connected to yourself. Make sure that you're not tolerating things in your relationship that are making you feel smaller. I think it's all about being your greatest self. October is just a wonderful month for us to look at how we can be independent in life and strong in the world.
