How to Be Consistent and Achieve Your New Year’s Resolutions

Life coach Rebeccah Silence explains why New Year's resolutions fail and how to make change stick. The key: choose ease over struggle, accept yourself as you are, and build a vision only you need to understand.
And the normal New Year's resolution gets broken on average on the 36th day. Let's talk about taking something that you want to change in 2022 and actually make it viable and longstanding.
So you making your life easier is about seeing the vision for what you want, deciding you're not crazy and nothing's wrong with you, and deciding that even if other people don't get it, you still, if you can see it, have to be the one to create it. And you have what it takes to create it.

I am well. Happy New Year, everyone.
Happy New Year to you as well. And I figured that's what we talk about today. Because the big thing, whenever there's a new Year, it's always New Year, New.
Me, New Year, New Me.
And it's, it's very stereotypical. It's pretty played out. And the normal New Year's resolution gets broken on average on the 36th day, which is just a little, a little more than a month.
Look at you with your statistical research data.
It's called Google. But the fact is, if, if you jump all in on a New Year, New Me type thing, more times than not, it's not going to work out for the long term. So let's talk about taking something that you want to change in 2022 and actually make it viable and longstanding.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So the first thing is, what if there's nothing to change? I think if we're coming at goals, like something's wrong with me, I need to change. You're already in an energy that's going to be part of what defeats you. So what if nothing needs to change but you get to have more, right? What if you get to have more? We just last week, you and I were talking offline five miles from my house here in the Louisville Lafayette, Boulder, Colorado area had massive wildfires. Over 1,000 families lost everything. There were businesses that were burned to the ground, like literally. We had 115 mile an hour winds. We've had a drought since June 15th. Snowed the next day, but it hadn't snowed or rained. These winds knocked down power lines and fires started and spread. And the thing is, we just never know. My family's safe. I'm so grateful for that. I'm so here for my community in this very difficult time. But I think, you know, crisis, obstacles, curveballs, whatever you want to call it, we never know when those moments are going to happen. And they are going to happen. And that doesn't mean that you're being punished or that you deserv it. It is just, why do we wait for those harder moments and then decide to go for our lives? Why not, instead of New Year's resolutions or waiting for a crisis to kick your butt, to motivate you to do something that you actually want to do with your life, just decide right now. In 2022, life gets to be easier because I decide to be better. You don't have to change, keep the best of you. But what about giving up, tolerating, waiting, going through the motions, survival. Why not make 2022 a year where you rise to the occasion of getting more out of your one life?
So when you talk about making your life easier, and I love the fact that you're like, there's what if there's nothing wrong with you? Because a lot of people feel like they need to change something. And I, and I agree with you, people are amazing in the way they are and who they are. But talking about making life easier. Yeah, that people, there are millions of people that would love to make their lives easier. Why don't we talk about a couple different ways that people can make their lives easier, that people may not even realize.
Yeah, absolutely. You know, I just watched the movie encanto with my 6 year old over the breakfast. And Encanto is such a cool movie because it's about this young girl in a family that sees that life could be different, that has gifts and talents that the rest of the family is questioning, doubting, and basically trying to shut down. And the thing is, nothing is wrong with you and you're not crazy. And the way you see that your life could be part of what's going to make your life easier is deciding to create that for yourself, even if other people don't get it. So one big way that you can make your life easier is by not needing other people to understand what you're trying to do. When you and I first, over 10 years ago, sat down with the owners of our first radio station and said, hey, we have an idea for a show. Do you know how many people told me I was crazy? Why? You're going to do what on the top 40 radio station? You're going to have a private pay, private practice as a life coach in Utica. Okay, nobody told me this was a good idea. No one. You and I had a conversation, we had that meeting, we hit the ground running, and it's been something bigger than us ever since, Right?
Gangbusters.
Absolutely right. And inspired results. My company has been bigger than me ever since I committed to it. So you making your life easier is about seeing the vision for what you want, deciding you're not crazy and nothing's wrong with you, and deciding that even if other people don't get it, you still, if you can see it, have to be the one to create it. And you have what it takes to create it. So the second way that you can make your life easier is by deciding that you don't need to suffer or struggle as a prerequisite to growth. We almost glorify making it hard, making it painful, making it take longer than it needs to take. What if you just decided not that it was going to be easy, but that you were going to commit to having more ease and flow and function, fun, creating what it is that you want? We think somehow struggle is a prerequisite to growth. What if it doesn't have to be? I gave that up last year. I gave up trying to prove myself. I gave up struggle and I gave up suffering. And that doesn't mean I don't have moments that are difficult. But I get to decide in the moment when it is hard, am I going to struggle, suffer, and be in this victimy place, or am I going to let my best be enough, have fun and create ease and flow as much as possible?
