What to do with Anger?

Rebecca Silence walks through three steps for handling anger: acknowledge it instead of denying it, find the unmet need underneath, and change your own actions to shift what happens next. She calls the last part doing a different dance step.
Hi, I'm Rebecca. Silence Inspired results Coach. And today I'd like to talk about anger. I'm asked a lot, what is anger and what do I do with it? So my first hot tip for you is, if you notice that you're angry, embrace it. Please don't deny or reject your anger, because when that happens, in my experience, the anger only gets louder and nastier and uglier. It doesn't go away if we pretend it's not there. So step one is to embrace your anger. Step two, once you've identified that you're angry and it's real, is to look for and identify. What is it that you're needing that you're not getting in the moment? In my experience, all behavior is the result of a need that's either being met or not met. And when I have behaviors that I'm not proud of or that just seem off for me, just notice that that could be because you have a need that's not being met. This is especially true when you're looking at children. Children, I say not what the behavior, but why the behavior. Why is it that they're doing what they're doing? And so if you're angry, number one, embrace it. Number two, identify what it is that you need that you're not getting. And then, number three, get radically responsible for your experience. And what I mean by that is that if you are feeling anger or upset of any kind, understand that you are the one in the driver's seat of your life. You are the common denominator. So if you aren't okay with where things are for you, it's up to you to do a different dance step and make your experience different, not up to other people to change or situations or circumstances to change. Number one, embrace your anger. Number two, look for what it is that you need that you're not getting so that you have a shot of getting that need met. And finally, number three, get in the driver's seat and do a different dance step so that your experience can change. Thanks so much for watching, everyone. Have a great week.
