Rich Schefren, 53, shares how he stays fit without lifting weights. He uses jumping rope as his main exercise, training at a boxing gym and hitting progressive milestones over years.
I'm 53 years old and I look like this, but I don't lift weights at all. Here's what I do to be in the shape that I'm in. People don't believe me when I tell them I don't lift weights and yet still look the way I do. And you can do this exercise anywhere, in a hotel room, at an airport, outside, or even in your bedroom. It's super convenient. And I do it for at least an hour a day. I'm talking about jumping rope. Here's the backstory. I went to a boxing gym where they did it as a warm up before the class even began. At the gym, there were both athletes as well as fat people. And all of them jumped roped for three minutes before the class started. I thought I was in fairly good shape, but I couldn't remember the last time I jumped roped. But that day in class, I could only do it for a minute. It was absolutely humiliating. When I left that boxing gym, I went straight to Target and bought this smart rope and started jumping. And within one year I did a half a million jumps. The second year, one million jumps. The third year, one and a half million jumps. And this year I'm shooting for two million jumps. And that's all I do. I don't lift weights, I don't hit the gym. Nope, nothing. Just jumping ropes for an hour straight without much break. By the time I'm done, my arms are swollen, my calves and shoulders are burning, and my arms are so pumped I can't even touch my shoulders for about an hour.
