Richard Milligan says leaders should deliver "extravagant value" in the first 72 hours with a candidate, then follow with "ascending value" that keeps increasing the benefit. These two moves, he argues, break the pattern of typical recruiting and help you land top talent.

And with all of the pressure that now comes out of recruit, it's time for leaders to actually improve their process to getting great people. So, over the last year, I've been working with a handful of leaders on an idea that really involves shifting this in a major way. And the first one is, is that at the onset of building the relationship, I mean, like early on within the first 72 hours, they become aware of who you are, that you should be giving extravagant value. So something that would be a bit of like a pattern breaker. The second premise that we've been working with these leaders on is to give ascending value. So ascending value would be taking the initial idea of extravagant value, something that's unreasonable, and then continuing to improve on that thing of value by giving even more value.
