Richard Milligan argues that a team's growth is directly tied to the leader's own development. When a leader grows, the team follows in both direction and speed. He recalls blaming external factors early on, then realized growth is a mirror of the leader's actions.

growth is the natural progression of great leadership because the team always goes in the direction and the speed of the leader. So a leader will lead growth or a leader won't lead growth. And that was a very hard framework for me to come into agreement with as a young leader because I was still learning and still growing and making massive mistakes. And there were seasons where I wasn't— where the team wasn't growing and we weren't doing great things. And it was easy for me to play the victim card of like, that person doesn't have it. They're not doing the right things. But the moment you look in the mirror as a leader and you go, growth is going to be a progression of this team because of me leading them. And so, it's all interconnected. It's connected.
