15 Min Mentor: Don’t Make This Money Mistake Like I Did

Rick Pino warns entrepreneurs not to fixate on coaching costs. He spent $155,000 on a coach and made $900,000 in six months. The real mistake is calculating what inaction costs you, not what mentorship does.

About 10 years ago, okay, my wife and I, we were starting to get very serious about entrepreneurial journey. And for those who don't know, I actually started my first business whenever I was 15 years old. So I've been entrepreneurial the whole entire time. Maybe you knew me from my worship days, but the whole time I've been very entrepreneurial and it wasn't until about 10 years ago that we started getting really serious about it. My wife also comes from an entrepreneurial family. So we've always had it in our, in our heart, in our blood, you know. And about 10 years ago, it was our turn to like, let's get serious about this and let's really start building these businesses and serving people. So while we were searching around, I was presented with an opportunity to join a business mentorship program. And I'll tell You what? It felt so big, it felt so scary because the investment was thousands and thousands of dollars. And though my wife we had gladly sewed into other people, we had gladly given to missionaries, and we'd gladly give in to churches, and we'd gladly give into movements and ministries, and we'd sewn into other people, we had considered ourself good soil to sow into. And so at the time, I knew, okay, this is the right decision for us. But, gosh, look at the cost of this thing. The cost is so big for where we were at the time. The cost is so much. And though I knew in my heart we needed this, I just couldn't get over the cost. So I had a great idea. I'm going to bring this to my wife, and surely she's going to rebuke me for suggesting that we invest this much money. Money into a mentorship program, of all things. It's not like we were buying a house or buying a car. We were buying coaching, we were buying mentorship. And so I brought it to her and I'm like, hey, here's what it is. Here's how it works. What do you think? And. And she goes, well, what do you think? And I said, gosh, I mean, it looks awesome. I just. Look how much it costs. Like, the cost is crazy. And I could not get over how much this thing cost. And thank God, my wife, at point, she looked at me and she said, rick, you're really focused on the cost, but what's it going to cost us if we don't join this mentorship program? And when she said that, it hit me. Boom. Like a ton of bricks. Boom. And it was just like, whoa. See, because here's the biggest mistake that most people make, especially those in the beginning of their entrepreneurial journey. I didn't understand, understand this, that a poverty mindset always focuses on the cost. But a wealth mindset, an abundance mindset, always focuses on what's it going to cost me if I don't. Now, this is so interesting because I was so focused on what's it going to cost, what's it going to cost? And to have my eyes open to what's it going to cost if I don't join this mentorship program was an unlock for me because it was. In that moment, I begin to think about what's it going to cost me if I don't figure this business thing out. What's it going to cost me if I don't become the person it takes in order to give my family the life that they desire and they deserve. What's it going to cost me if I don't break these generational curses off of my family? What's it going to cost me if I don't join this mentorship program? And so here's what happened when she said that, I said, gosh, we got to do this. And so we joined the mentorship program. And from what we learned in that mentorship program, six months later, not six years, six months later, we had made $900,000 already from what we had learned in that mentorship program. And it was then that I began to discover, Gosh, and here's the punchline. I want you guys to get. The cost of inaction is greater than the cost of action. See, everything costs. There's a cost to everything. There's a cost to taking action, and there is a cost to taking no action. And I have discovered that the cost of taking no action is always significantly greater than the cost of actually taking action. It's so interesting because now my wife and I, a big part of our annual budget in our business goes to reinvesting into coaches, mentors, mentorship programs, etc. And like, right now, I have six different business coaches. I have six different business mentorship programs that I'm a part of, and the cheapest one is $50,000. So I'm literally spending multiple, multiple, multiple six figures per year on coaches, mentors, mentorship programs, going to training event, et cetera. Why? Because I understand now if I don't continue to always push myself to level up to the next level in my entrepreneurial journey, in my wisdom, in my knowledge, in my understanding. Guys, mentorship is the shortcut. It's the shortcut. Like, consider this. Jesus prepared for 30 years, so his disciples only had to prepare for three. There is an acceleration that happens through mentorship, okay? And in the business world, the way that we access that mentorship is you pay people to teach you the game. Like, that's how it works. You literally pay somebody to teach you the game. And when you learn the game, you take massive action on what you learn, and you get to shortcut. Here's another crazy story, okay? I have a business mentor right now, and he's in his mid-60s, 60s, okay? This guy, it literally took him, like, 45 years of business to make. To learn how to make a million dollars in his business, okay? 45 years. Like, I don't know about you, but that is. That's a long time to learn how to make a million bucks, okay? And. But thank God he did it and said it took him 45 years to learn how to make a million dollars in his business. And it wasn't until 60 years old that he made a million dollars in his business. So now he charges people $155,000 to teach them his systems. That took him 45 years to learn. This was about three and a half years ago. I hired him, I joined his mentorship program. I hired him to be my coach and I paid him 155,000, by the way. That's every single year, okay? And I've still paid him that over the past. I paid him 155,000. Now, a lot of people would say, like, Rick, you're crazy. You could have bought a house in some places here in America. You could have like, you paid the guy $155,000 to be your coach. Yes, gladly. Because here's the crazy part. We joined this mentorship program three and a half years ago. Remember what I told you? It took him 45 years to learn how to make a million dollars in his business. In one year, from what I learned from two months later, my wife and I, we were able to make a million dollars not in a year, not in a month, not in a week, but in one single day. We made a million dollars in one single day just by what I learned from paying the guy to just show me his systems. So what is this mistake that I'm talking about? It's the mistake of focusing on what's it going to cost me. This is such a poverty mindset. What's it going to cost? What's going. That's a scarcity mindset. You're focused on, oh, I want to, I want to hold everything because if I release this stuff, then I'm not going to be able to get it back. See, that's a scarcity mindset. It's a poverty mindset to think if you were to invest something that you're not going to be able to get it back. But the way that investments work, especially the ones into yourself, into your knowledge, into your skills, into your education, the way that investments work is of course you're not going to get it back immediately. Like, there is nowhere on this planet that you can invest where you're going to get an roi, a return on that investment immediately. That's not how investments work. Like, you don't plant the seed and immediately a full blown fruit tree pops up with just overflowing fruit. That's not how it works. The way that investments work is you make the investment, and then you water the seed, and then you're faithful with the seed. In business, you make the investment. You go through the programs, you learn the frameworks, you learn the teachings. You take massive action, and over time, you can start growing and reaping the fruit of your investment. Okay, Sometimes it takes a little bit quicker. Like the two months it took me and my wife to learn how to make a million dollars in a day that was built on top of a ton of other coaches that I had already hired, a ton of other skills that I had already developed. And so it came a little bit easier for me. But the first time around, right. It felt so gigantic and so huge. Oh, my go. What's it going to cost? What's it going to cost? Can I tell you guys the biggest mistake that I'm making right now? I already know I'm making this biggest mistake, and it's in conjunction to the mistake of focusing on the cost. My biggest mistake that I'm making right now in business is I'm not spending enough on my coaches and mentors. Wait, what? Rick, you just said you spend hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on coaches and mentors. I do. And here's the punchline. I already know I'm not spending enough on them. I need to jo. Join more mentorships. I need to join more coaching programs. Why? Because I'm telling you, man, this is the unlock. It's the hack. It is the cheat code. Do you remember cheat codes? I grew up in the 80s and 90s, and cheat codes were a thing, man. You could. You could log in and you could either like, bang your head against the wall, practice, practice, like go through the whole entire game over and over and over and finally eventually win the game. Or you could just go get the cheat codes. They had cheat code book. They were so fun, right? Because all you got to do is put in the cheat code, and boom, instantly you had a significant advantage over not having the cheat code. And I'm telling you this. Investing into coaching, investing into mentorship. Stop focusing on the cost of things and start focusing on what's it going to cost me if I don't. These kind of mindsets are the cheat codes for success in your finances, for success in your business, for success in your health, for success in your marriage. Wherever you desire to have success that you're not where you want to be, go hire a mentor, go hire a coach. And listen, don't just. Don't just be flipping about it, okay? Don't just go out There, like Rick said, go hire a coach, go hire a mentor, and you just hire the next Joe Schmo that you find on the Internet. Like, make sure that that coach, that that mentor. Number one, make sure that they've been able to do the thing that you desire for them to help you with, that they've done it for themselves. Right. Number two, make sure that they've helped others do the thing that you desire to have success in. And then the third thing that I like is make sure that they have lots of social proof, meaning they've helped not just one or two people do it. They've helped a ton of people do it. For instance, you know, if you hire a health coach who's significantly overweight and has never helped anybody, you know, transform their health before, are they going to be the best health coach? Maybe, Maybe not. Probably not. You know, for a business coach, somebody to help you get your business going, get your finances right. Hire a coach, hire a mentor. One reason how come so many students come to us is because we have, number one, my wife and I have done it for ourselves, obviously. Number two, we've helped thousands. We've helped thousands of people learn the game of business, learn the game of digital marketing and digital products, and we've helped tons and tons and tons. Like, countless amounts of our students have got massive success. I have video testimonies for a ton of them from their own mouth. And, you know, I was talking to somebody recently, and they were like, well, Rick, how do I know that all of these testimony videos that. That you've shown me are true? True? And I'm like, either all, whatever, 47 of these random videos are lying. And there's more than that, by the way. I'm just making up a number. Either all of these bajillions of people are lying, or they're all telling the truth. Like, which one do you think it is? Like, did I somehow get all of these people to lie for me? No. Like, we help people get results. And when it comes to you investing into mentorship, into coaching, you need to invest into somebody who has done the thing for themselves. They've helped others do it, and they've helped others en masse. They've done it on a massive scale because that is a sure sign that if they've been able to do it for themselves and do it for a ton of other people, they can absolutely help you get the results that you desire as well. So what's the punchline that I'm trying to give you guys in this quick 15 minute mentor video. The punchline is this. Number one, the cost of inaction is always, always more, always more expensive than the cost of inaction. And I'm tying this to the idea that if you have the desire to level up in any area of your life, you need to make sure that you go hire somebody to be your coach, be your mentor, so that you can get the cheat code of success so it doesn't have to take you years, it doesn't have to cost you thousands, tens of thousands of hundreds of thousands. You can literally just get their frameworks, get their cheat codes, plug it into your system and boom, you can jump the line. You can save years and tons of money just by investing into correct mentors. Don't focus on what's it going to cost me. Start focusing on what's it going to cost if I don't.
