How Do I Trust God When I'm Scared About The Future?

A pastoral/devotional talk by Rick Torrison addressing fear and anxiety about the future. The speaker consoles listeners, cites scripture (Psalm 34:18; John 16:33), offers three practical steps—speak truth louder than fear, pray honestly, and stay connected to hope—and encourages use of the Living Limitless app (and its ‘Rickbot’) for ongoing support and encouragement.

Hey, if your chest feels tight right now, if you're doom scrolling, if your mind won't stop racing about what might go wrong next, do me a favor. Hear me on this. You are not crazy, you're not weak, and you are definitely not alone. What you're feeling isn't just anxiety. It's actually fear rooted in uncertainty. And you're asking one of the most honest questions anyone could ask. Right now, in this moment, how do I trust God? I'm scared about the future. Let's unpack that. Because there is a way forward, a way to find peace, even when life feels out of control. Do you know what I mean? Let's just call it what it is. The world feels like it's spinning out of control. Shootings, division, wars, cost of living, AI replacing jobs, there's relationships falling apart, what's true and what's not, and. And then somehow we're supposed to wake up every morning, go to work, put a smile on for the camera, and act like everything's just fine? No, hear me. You're right to feel something, but here's the truth. God never asked you to ignore your fear. He invites you to bring it to Him. See, one of the most repeated commands in scripture isn't try harder or be perfect. It's don't be afraid. And that's not some cold get over it statement. It's more like, man, I know it's scary, but I'm with you. I've got you. God's not asking you to fake it, put down the mask. He's asking you to trust him in it as you go through it. So when you ask, how do I trust God when I'm scared about the future, I think there's something deeper that's going on. I think you're really. What you're really asking is, can I trust that something good is still coming? Can I believe in purpose when all I see is pain? Where is God? When I'm crying in my room and nobody notices? If that's you, would you do me a favor for the next minute or so, would you lean in? God is closer than you think. There's a Psalm, 34, verse 18. It says, the Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Is that you? If you're scared, if you're tired of pretending God's not turned off by your fear, neither am I. He leans in, he listens, and he still leads. You don't need to clean yourself up first. He's going to meet you right where you are now. Let me be real. Trusting God doesn't mean that you'll never feel afraid again. It means fear no longer gets the final word. It doesn't get to control. You see, it's not blind faith. It's anchored in a real hope. So here's a picture. You're in a boat in a storm. The waves, they are real. The wind, man, it is loud. The fear, it is valid. But trust says, even if I can't see the shore, I know who's in the boat with me. Jesus never promised us a life without storms. But here's what he did promise. His presence in the middle of the storms. Hey, John 16:33, it says this. In this world, you. You will have trouble. Okay? But then he goes on to say, take heart. I have overcome the world. You don't need to predict the future to have peace. You just need to trust the one who holds the future in his hands. And here's the good news. The one who holds that future, he also holds you. So what do you do? What do you do when fear hits again? I'm going to give you three simple steps. One, speak truth louder than fear. When fear whispers, what if you answer with even if. Even if the world shakes, I know who anchors me, right? Even if I don't know what's next, I know God is with me. Here's the second thing. Replace the panic you're feeling with prayer. Not the polished kind. I'm talking about the raw, honest prayer. Things like, God, I'm scared and I don't know what to do. That kind of prayer, that's the prayer he loves the most. See, he hears you. He honors it. He responds to it. He draws near with those prayers. Number three, stay connected to hope. You weren't mean. You weren't meant to. To wrestle with fear at 2am in the morning when you're by yourself. So that's why I created this Living Limitless app. It really is. It's more than a tool, it's a resource. I believe it's a safe space. When you go to the app, you can open the rickbot and you can type in your fear and get real time encouragement and biblical truth right when you need it. You don't need more fake peace. What you need is real presence. And that starts when you stop waiting for the fear to disappear, and you invite God into those moments instead. Listen, you were born for more than panic, anxiety, fear. You were created for peace. And peace isn't the absence of problems. Here's the real truth. Peace comes with the presence of God. So do me a favor, take a deep breath. God's not done, and neither are you.
