The Heart of a Champion

A short motivational YouTube talk by Rick Torres (closing name appears as Rick Torresen) titled "The Heart of a Champion." Using the 1995 NBA Finals and Rudy Tomjanovich’s quote (“Don't ever underestimate the heart of a champion”) as a framing anecdote, the speaker reframes championship beyond sports into a mindset of resilience: showing up, persevering, and learning from loss. He offers two concrete steps to "awaken" this mindset — (1) "clean your glasses" (reframe past lenses) and (2) "turn your losses into learns" — and recommends John Maxwell’s books (Failing Forward; Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Learn). The talk closes with encouragement to take action and share the message.

Hey guys, welcome back. I'm Rick Torres and I'm excited to be with you today and sharing another great message on leadership and transformation in the 1995 NBA Finals, future hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon and the six seeded Houston Rockets. They overcame a lackluster season and a rocky start to the playoffs to dominate future hall of Famer Shaquille o' Neal and the Orlando Magic. After winning four games to zero, Houston head coach Rudy Tomjanovic, he addressed the crowd and the television audience with this defining statement. He said, we had nominated believers all along the way and I have one thing to say to those non believers. Don't ever underestimate the heart of a champion. As you can see, I'm surrounded today by one of the top sports memorabilia collections in the country. And when you think about the players that wore these jerseys, you think about greatness, legends, the hall of Fame, you think about and remember champions. Now, I was fortunate and blessed to be able to attend the 95 NBA Finals with the Rockets and the Magic. It wasn't a great series because we swept the Magic. It was a great series because no one gave us a chance. The Magic, led by Shane Jack, breezed through the playoffs and everyone thought they would breeze through the finals as well. I remember Rudy's quote. It became a mantra over our city. Never underestimate the heart of a champion. Rudy was referencing a battle on the basketball court. But what does it mean to have the heart of a champion in life with our families, our friends, our relationships in the workplace? Is the heart of a champion determined by winning a championship? I don't think so. Can you have the heart of a champion if you lose? You know, I believe the answer is absolutely yes. The heart of a champion isn't about winning a game or a. The heart of a champion is really about an attitude and a mindset. It's a belief system that calls us to never quit, keep engaging, keep fighting for whatever you believe, no matter what the odds. The heart of a champion is about showing up, suiting up, and never giving up. So let me ask you, when you think of the heart of a champion, what words come to mind? You know, I asked my Facebook friends and my real life friends to get me some words and I got some great words. Many of them chose similar words like brave, courageous, and overcomer. But there were other words like a fighter, resilient, relentless, forgiving, steadfast and loyal. Can anyone have the heart of a champion or is it something that you're born with? I Believe this. It's something that you're born with. But here's what else I believe. Everyone is born with it. Even you. The problem is that for many of us, we don't believe it. We've allowed the challenges of life to beat us down and keep us down. And the truth is, life can be hard. It's not fair. I know you'd agree with me. We didn't ask for some of the things that have happened to us. And in most cases, we didn't do anything to deserve it. Yet we found ourselves on the receiving end of pain and of loss. And over time, those experiences became the lenses that we viewed our lives through and life through. But I'm here to tell you that's not who you are. You were created for more. You were created for a future, a destiny and a hope. Now, I don't know what your more is, but maybe it's time to wake up. That heart of a champion in you that you were born with, it's in there waiting for you to believe. So what does it take to awaken the heart of a champion? Let me share two things with you. First, clean your glasses. Those lenses that you're looking through and looking at life through, those lenses that have been formed by the experiences of your life, they don't define you. You're not defined by yesterday. In other words, your past does not define your future. But for many of us, the things that happen to us, the environment that we were raised in or the circumstances around us have become the lenses by which we view our life and our future through. Hear me, your past was never meant to define your future. It should inform you and refine you, but not define. The second thing is turn your losses into learns. Just because you fail, it doesn't make you a failure. We're only failures when we refuse to get back up. We only become failures when we stay in the pit. We wallow in our own self pity and we blame others for why we're there. Every mistake, every stumble or failed attempt is actually an opportunity to learn and grow. Here's a bonus I'm going to give you. Maxwell. John Maxwell wrote two great books. One's called Failing Forward, the other one, sometimes you win, sometimes you learn. I'd encourage you to add those to your reading list. Said, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. You know, we only become stronger if we learn from the losses and begin to embrace some of these words that we talked about earlier about a heart of a champion. You remember those words? Courageous, overcomer, resilient. Forgiving, steadfast, loyal. So, my friends, here's the deal. It's time to turn the page. Remember, your story has not been written yet. The pages of tomorrow are blank, and you get to be the author of your story. You were born with the heart of a champion. If you have not experienced it, then it's time to wake it up. You start by cleaning your glasses and turning your losses into learns. So, friends, thanks for sharing your time with me. Thanks for continuing to go on this journey with us, and I hope you find value in the messages that we're sharing. And if so, would you share those with your friends? I appreciate you guys. Until next time, I'm Rick Torresen, and I'm believing your best is yet to come.
